Thanks for the video, I can kind of confirm everything you explained are correct because I just took my original Zippo out and compared with your video (even the opening the lid sound sounds the same 😀). Just to let everybody know, I have got a 2009 model (case and inside) and it says "Made in ZIPPO ® U.S.A." which is NOT FAKE! My ® is like his also at the bottom. The new models (somebody here already confirmed, after 2011) writes "ZIPPO made in..." Another thing, it's about the padding/felt and the cotton. You can see the capitalization of the words LIFT TO FILL. The original has these words printed with spaces in between. The fake one he showed in the video didn't show spaces but instead everything is written together like LIFTTOFILL. I am happy I got an original one which I actually bought on China (about 30€? Not quite sure). China doesn't only sell fake ones. Another area you can check if your Zippo is real, the box that came with it. Just check its quality build and the printing of the logo and the eight dots. Inside the box look for the certificate. I am Chinese but I would recognize if the spelling is a disaster or not. Instruction should always be in English or if you are in another country and have another localization, at least there is always an English version included. Peace out!

What some people don't realize is that there will be slight inconsistencies even in genuine stuff like this.. Examples will be vintage american fender stratocasters. Sometimes even a month apart in production means a slight change in wiring or even headstock logo shapes on transition models. Just because two items don't match exactly doesn't mean one is fake, in this case especially considering the two items are 3 years apart.

If I had to tell the difference between the sounds, I'd say the fakes usually make a "shing" sound, and the real makes a "shing" sound. That's how I distinguish between the two.

I wanted to share a bit of information, that the orange seals are not always included for Zippo marketed outside the USA unless there are sellers who import directly from USA to supply markets outside the USA. That's because I live in Indonesia and here there is no official Zippo distributor such as Japan or European countries like London. Sellers in Indonesia usually imported from Asian distributors, Europe, or the USA. And indeed only Zippo from USA which has orange seal.

@sportssox10 I have one that dates to 1994 and it too is printed from cam to wheel. I could be wrong, but I think that the chimney to bottom printing started in 2002. As for the inside color, my older Zippos tend to have slightly darker hued internals which may mean that the older ones are a bit tarnished or that Zippo was using brass with a different amount of zinc in older models.

Hello, I have what I think is a real Zippo, It was purchased in 2002 and came in what appeared to be genuine packaging. It has a 5 barrel hinge, steel rivits, 16 holes in the chiminey and a brass eyelet at the flint. I can see from wear that the body is brass, clad in an "antique silver" finish. the bottom is marked "A" Zippo 02" "Bradford PA Made in USA" What is makeing me wonder is that the bottom of the body is flat, not canned. Did they make flat bottomed Zippos in 2002?

@cutlerylover you should probably clarify that brass can also turn green because in the video, both lighter cases look brassish. brass contains copper so it will also turn green. also, the lighter i have is a pool one with the metal decorations that keeps it from making that click when open and closed. its more of a muffled sound.

No offense, but your "minute" details mean nothing. Zippo made in USA is accurate. As is Made in Zippo USA. The sound is not identical on all Zippo. Sometimes the wick is visible. I have no idea if your Zippo is fake, but nothing you've shown here is evidence of a fake Zippo. All you did was needlessly and incorrectly worry people into wondering if their Zippo is fake based on your faulty information and lack of knowledge when it comes to Zippos.

Additionally, you don't always find the orange sticker on Zippos purchased from other countries. Based on your lack of any real evidence, your Zippos is genuine. If it's not, actual proof is required. Unfortunately, you've shown none. Until you have some, the verdict remains "not fake".

Absolutely correct. Zippo's Sold in South Africa very seldom have the sticker. Case in Point: My new Venetian (chrome) came in a genuine box, was placed on special-order though the licensed distributor, and has the "ZIPPO made in USA" (the supposedly "fake" one). My girlfriend also purchased a Zippo WITHOUT a red sticker, ALSO has the "fake" writing on the inner. The Author is also reminded that Zippo themselves, have authoritatively said in one of their videos that they make minor changes to things on the Zippo over the course of time to be able to spot the fakes. They know which ones, and it a closely guarded secret.

@Z.A. Adams; As Walmart is an authorized Zippo dealer, most likely it is a genuine Zippo. Since the mark "I" stands for "September" and the mark "11" stands for 2011, Zippo manufactured that insert in Septermper of 2011.

it means it was made in may. Each letter corresponds to a month. A is January B is February and so on.

I have a Zippo I just received from DX.COM, SKU 19474. It is a Zippo model 31690, 200 REG BRUSH FIN CHROME and it seems genuine according to the differences for fakes shown in your video. Incidentally, I could not lift the bottom pad without inserting a small screwdriver between it and the case as it was recessed below the level of the case. Is this normal for a genuine Zippo? I saw that you used your fingers. I am concerned however that it does have a very wobbly hinge. Is this normal for a new Zippo? In addition, it did not come with the case sticker you mention but it did come with a box with warranty and instructions.

My "Zippo" caries the the 1981 "/" marking on the left side, however the wording is Zippo (Rights reserved R thing) next line Bradford, PA. Does not say "Made in USA"? Also the insert markings are written vertically, not horizontally. Is it real, or fake?

I went to a vintage shop and bought a all black zippo for 7 dollars and it wasnt working (could work with gas and flint) but I noticed it had the initials P.A.K. on it and it looked as if it was spray painted black. It has a zippo logo over the black paint that is fading and has brass showing through the paint. The hinge is really firm and tough to open. And the inside features no instructions on the metal. The screw for flint is way smaller and the cotton and cotton cover are very thick. The bottom has the zippo logo but the paint I believe has covered every piece of important info. Overall a really weird lighter I now own. Don't know if its real tbh.

So Jeff - I have a 2014 Zippo pipe lighter (black with pipe logo) and the insert has the wording that looks like your fake insert - does Zippo move the Zippo word around in the stamping from year to year. I'll look at my other pipe inserts of various years here tonight. All other attributes of the insert seem to look good (shape of cam, stamping of retention detent, rivets, etc). The dates also match between the case and insert. The spot welds (3) on the insert look good also. It's been interesting watching videos on (good) fake Zippos. Mine came new with all warning stickers, box and paperwork. Fun trying to spot the copies...

The exact nature of the ping sound when opening the lid doesn't mean much. I have two chrome-plated Zippos from the 1990s (one polished and one brushed) which both sound the same when opening the lid, but I also have a silver-plated Zippo that I bought from R.J. Reynolds with "Camel Cash" in the 1990s, which has a significantly lower frequency ping sound, which I like better. So I assume the coating and/or plating material can affect the sound.

Should be real if you buy direct from Amazon themself. But then it might be missing the sticker if it was a return. Real Zippos would also have the circular price on the front of the Zippo too. I would check to make sure all the other tell tell signs of a zippo are still there. Or you could just return it to be safe.

One slip up: "Zippo made in USA" is actually correct as well. You just freaked out quite a few people because of this :p I don't know exactly when did the phrasing change (2009, 2010 or 2011?) but I've seen 2011 inserts only with "Zippo made in USA" on them.

i have a day of the dead zippo i bought from a corner store earlier this year, in a zippo display case and came with a box and guarantee and everything. the insert says zippo made in usa, and the case actually looks copper, im not sure though, it has a new type of coating thats like that smooth paint. the bottom stamping is exact. it sounds real as hell. i may post a video response to this video to show you

Have you actually sent it to Zippo to get it checked? I have a few of these and I have had one fixed by Zippo for free so that means it was a real one. I am sure they would soon let you know if it was a fake.

Deal extreme now carries what they call "genuine zippos" at $32 each, did they start carrying real ones or did i miss out on the $5 ones?

I've bought 6 zippos and only one came with the sticker, are you sure they're meant to all come with stickers? I've bought 4 from Amazon and a couple from a local shop and one of them from Amazon had the sticker. I even bought the 80th anniversary zippo and it didn't have the sticker D:

My zippo, a $10 from Wal-mart ($15 from meijer) one, has a "k" as the month and the inside of the case is also turning green from tarnish. What does this mean?

Not necessarily. One of my old zippos got flattened by a truck. Zippo couldn't fix it so they sent me a brand new one for free. So I know it is genuine. It says ZIPPO MADE IN U.S.A.
