I have an old Ames mattock made in Boston(stamped on blade). Wonder how old it is? Tough as heck! Much better than what they make now!

I've been looking for a new handle for my Cutter Mattock for years. Nobody sells the old style anymore. I guess I'll have to break down and make my own. I'm a machinist, so how hard can it be. I make complicated parts out of Steel every day. It's only wood, right?! Good job on yours!

Finally an american who knows what a mattock is, Also odd thing i noticed is all the newly made mattocks sold in the ladt 50 years in America and canada are short blade cutters!! Why!! Why the hell!!

If I were to guess, I would imagine it is because here the mattock is used mostly just for digging and the Pulaski tool is more common for work that needs cutting/chopping. At least that is my experience in the area where I grew up.

@@Factor85Labs ah sorry i didnt elaborate. In the usa is only 1 type of cutter mattock sold these days. If you rewind back to 100 years or 120 years ago in tool catalogue there is many more Many english tools imported in different patterns. But in the last 60 or so years only one tool is made and imported. Its a short head cutter mattock. The axe head is very short and thick narrow and much shorter than the hoe/adze on the other side. This is a terrible design for north America ln soils. Its ok in places with very very hard dry rocky ground.. Maybe iran or afghanistan or something in arizona possibly. But a long cutter blade is better in almpst any case always. In the uk the most popular type is similar but with a much longer axe blade, about 40 or 50% longer, this ise to be the more common type in the usa but at some point the short cutter took over, id have to look in tool catalogues and see when probably a long time ago, sl the most common english pattern is till narrow and thick its the common type used in australia, new zealand, south africa, nigeria, india and the rest of the british empire and china too because these tools were made based copying english tools , these nations never had mattocks themselves previously digging chisels like a giant chisel on a pole were used or heavy short very curved hoes in india ect so the narrow english type has a great distribution now. . But even in england they sell the short cutter too! (there is nowhere in the uk its useful, no soil to suit it) but the antique 1800s mattocks are almost all long cutters and many with a wider axe head - still narrow by slightly flared out towards the edge. That short pattern was originally sold more for people working around rocks. Railroads, quarries or markets with rocky deserts, even in australia tye short pattern isnt used, its of no use compqrednto the long cutter. It just seems very odd like somebody accidentally picked an obscure specialised pattern in error in a catalogue 70 or 80 years ago and it just stucj as people dodnt know better! . The germans and italians still retain many different patterns and for soff garden spoil they use much a wider adze/hoes sometimes dished out and the axe looks more like a medieval battle axe. But in rocky soils they have stouter patterns closer in function to the english ones although very different in shapem. English mattocks sold in england l and north america also have far heavier handles and shorter handles than central european mattocks. You can really veat on them. In tge east of the usa where there was some hand tool production the mattocks have weird small wedged hsndles like some mattocks from austria.. Assembled like an axe handle. This is a regional peculiarity to eastern canada snd the eastern and norther midwest if america. The rest of tye nation uses tge regular english mattock. I dont know the origin of this central european style of handle but the head patterns are english. Its a much inferior way to fit the handle for such rough use tool. Maybe there was an austriab our south german maker or importer who influenced new england makers like collins in the 19th century. The pulansky is mostly an american fire department tool but it is very close to many more axe focused mattocks from the alps of europe. These adzes have a traditional regional axe head on one side and a shorter hoe or adze on the other sie (some have an actuial wide short hoe others a blade that is only an adze for example) they are muse like the pulansky to clear scrub on hilly ground and root out small trees and shrubs so the axe is more used than the hoe or adze. Wjere very soft soil exsists like holland and some highly cultivated plains in italy, holland and germany a much longer thinner handle is used than on english tools, i have about 7 different mattocks i use for different tasks. They are the king of agricultural hand tools i think. The lord of the land. I found it mind boggling in asoa still in many places this tool is unknown and they instead use those digging chisels and digging bars to dig everything!, even if a mattock were available thry were skeptical of it! In thailand or laos or vietnam for example thos tool was scarse and "expencive" and exotic to people. The "sai" or digging chisel was very cheap 2 or 3$ for the head.. And they just chipped away slowly with them as they always did, in china tge mattock has taken over but in isolated areas you still see the dogging bars and ground chisels.

I just bought a pick/mattock handle at a local hardware store and shaved and sanded it to fit. If you measure the eye, you could probably look online at House Handle Company to find something that is a more exact fit.

Pickax question: Sharpening the flat blade or cutting blade, I am guessing you would bevel the inside (toward the handle) of the steel, but the pointed end. Should I sharpen three sides, all four? It is very old and rounded off. Unable to tell how it was original but needs some sharpening. What would you recommend?

I have never sharpened the pick end of a pickaxe. It doesn't really need to be sharp, but I would guess that you would sharpen all four sides.

Sometimes the levels sound good when I'm editing, but I'm often using headphones, and it sounds totally different through speakers or a phone. Music is a bit louder than intended in this video. Thanks for the input. I don't always watch videos on a different device or computer after I upload them, so I miss issues sometimes.
