How to check and install LS beehive valve springs on Vortec heads + check for max lift!
Ls6 springs work great for mild roller cams!
An easy at home way to check your spring height and spring to retainer clearance at home, no special tools needed (other than a caliper)
I do own a valve spring micrometer but this method works for guys that dont
Beehive Springs offer great valve control/performance and require no expensive machining to work on vortec heads.
*Stock vortec springs are only good for mild roller cams under approx .430 lift or mild flat tappet cam or
* updated part#*

@@cuttersperformance Thank you for sharing!!! I just did my first top end rebuilt on my 1970 chevelle crewcab. I used Vortec heads on the 307 bottom end. I have a 350 in the garage and I wanting to use my vortec heads on them with a nice cam - but I don't want to machine the hell out of them. With this information, I can get springs and put a nice cam in it and really go to town! Keep up the content - you actually explain things so that EVERYONE can understand. I am learning all of this and have been lost. There is a guy locally who I met on the SBC board on Facebook and he has been an awesome GURU for me as well! You are right there is not only so much misinformation but also nasty people who get hateful in a second if you don't grasp the concept they are poorly explaining. So, I tip my hat to you - and I will share your content with everyone I can.

I'm going to totally agree with this statement. And I have over 20 years experience building high performance engines, and so I also know what to look for when people make videos about a specific subject. I'm also the type that will call out somebody when they're just trying to get views but don't really know what they're talkin about. While there would be a couple of things I would add, this video is quite good and quite informative, and also explaining things in a clear way for others to understand. I can only imagine who gave it thumbs down. But then again it seems like every good video has thumbs down but nobody comments on why. Anyways this is a very misunderstood subject and very rarely do I see people cover it this clearly. I'm definitely impressed.

I agree that this is an excellent vid. The reason there aren't more views is because these engines are obsolete. LS is the budget build of choice now and the next generation LT has been out for quite awhile now. The LT will replace the LS and will only gain momentum in the coming years.

You can run harden valve lash caps to get the needed stem height for the self aligning rocker arms. Just something to add I know a lot of people shy away from running them but they do work, also yes I know I am commenting on a 3 year old video just figured I would add this for those that did not know.

I just pulled my pressed in studs on 906 vortec heads. I used anti seize grease to lubricate the nut on the stud being pulled . if the nut starts getting hot move to the next stud and let that one cool off. It looked like most of the studs are stake and were difficult to pull and a couple came out easy. do not use a cheap nut use a valve stud nut which is hardened.

Yeah man not hard to do, Use a leak down tester to pressurize the cylinder at TDC, then use a on car head valve spring compressor to push the spring down. Then carefully use a magnet to remove the keepers. *the compressed air hold the valve up* Let me know if that doesn't answer your questions and I can do a video on it Cheers!

Someone mentioned to me that they had seen a KZbin video about swapping to complete LS valve train. I don't remember, they said they were the 1.99" intakes and 1.55" exhaust. Upgrading to a bronze 1/2" odd guide for the .312" valve stem, as well as the LS6 springs. I haven't found anything on this. I've found plenty of videos, swapping springs. Yours is the most comprehensive on the spring swap. But I'm wondering if there is any advantage, performance-wise, flow-wise or weight-wise with that kind of swap. All I know is is from what I've been finding in researching, is that the stock 1.94s and 1.50s are pretty much better off left alone rather than going to a 2.02 and 1.60. Have you ever seen or heard about anything about the valve & spring swap (and guide) upgrade?

Hey I was told and many write ups online using ls6 springs and comp cam retainers 767-16 u could run a lt4 hot cam so what you are saying is even with the ls6 springs and retainer u can only still get a max lift of .480 with 1.5 rockers
@cuttersperformance
@cuttersperformance 3 жыл бұрын
You will have to check on your heads but you will find that running the 787 on vortec heads won't give you the proper spring installed height with stock keepers That will two things: 1) Your valve spring just went from a max lift of say .550 with a 1.800 installed height to a max lift of .500 installed at 1.750. 2) your seal to retainer clearance with proper safe clearance will only be around. 480 maybe .500 with stock seals. So Basically no matter how you do it with stock keepers and Ls6 springs past .500 lift you are pushing the limits. Will it work slightly past .500 with stock keepers...maybe but is it worth the risk? You will have to do the measurements on the heads, you can use the method shown in the video without having to but any special tools Let me know if you have any questions

@cuttersperformance
@cuttersperformance 4 жыл бұрын
I dial indicator would work if you have one. They also make special spring pocket dial indicators for checking spring height. But this way works great for most people with basic tools at home, and after the first spring its easy to quickly check the rest

Great video. I've used this one plus other vids you have to rebuild my L31 Vortec heads. From a newb - thanks. Some updates if helpful: 1) The part # for the GM springs has been replaced with GM (19420455). They have changed color also to a gun metal gray. Summit Racing has them. 2) Finding the valve locks/keepers has been challenging. When searching for 99095-1, I'm being redirected to 99097 or 98. Where to get the keepers?

In your opinion should i keep the stock self alinign rocker arms or i should buy the aftermarket rocker arms ? Surely i will also take a look at the clearance between the retainers and the rocker

As far as the rocker concern with the offset keeper, could this be remedied by using self aligning roller tip rockers?
@cuttersperformance
@cuttersperformance Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you can typically use a roller tip rockers with factory valves and offset keepers. The exhaust valve is no problem as the tip is longer, but the intake valve you have to check for clearance
