Amazing to see the growth of the one you hard pruned. I'd heard other videos mention that growth would come back in pairs on the nodes that were pruned but this is the first visual example I've seen. Liked this video so much I've archived it for future reference.

I remember from my botany classes, the water leaking from the stem or leaf is gutation. Transporation is water evaporating from the stomates on the leaves.

i'm in Maryland on the Eastern shore it sits on my deck and gets sun all day long. I have watered it at times everyday and the thing I've noticed is the leaves plump up and the tips turn purple. in a few weeks i'll bring it in the house till about April, and i'll only water it a few times over the winter. And even by April the leaves are not paper thin, back into full sun some water and the tree grows and gets really green. everyone is right, you almost can't kill a jade

I have several 35+ year old Jades and they live under grow lights in a small basement greenhouse. Should I open the zipper of the greenhouse in the winter to give them cool air and perhaps induce flowering? Though the plants are not watered very often, they are wonderful looking, with a tinge of red on the leaf edges that are closest to the light and the mini greenhouse becomes quite warm and humid feeling( to me). I am considering letting them experience the cool temps of the basement ( about 50degrees F) this winter. I had other Jades a long while ago that bloomed every winter with a perfume that was more delicious than orange blossoms. That one got cooler winter temps.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 ай бұрын
I have never had mine flower yet as it needs a period of cool temps....here is an article i found. "Firstly, jade plants must reach a certain age and size in order to start flowering. They usually bloom for the first time once they reach about 40cm high. Young jade plants will not bloom. Secondly, they must be kept somewhere dry and cool in winter, ideally below 11 °C. It also helps to place your jade plant outdoors during the summer and only bring it inside for autumn and winter. Lastly, theseplants need as much light as possible, even throughout the winter months. Without enough light, they will not develop flowers. As long as all these conditions are met, the chance of your money plant flowering is high."

If there are pests or concerns about breakage... Then you can definitely prune in the winter. You might not see as vigorous growth as in summer. If it's not getting a ton of light, you can always move it to brighter light or give it a grow light while it recovers

But its current pots badly cracked, and i was sweating manhandling it into a new pot.

Hi Jeff, thanks for another great and informative video. Do you have any advice for those living in hotter climates to care for Jade plants successfully? How to keep them healthy etc? Any artificial environment to be created to keep Jades happy in hotter climates etc ? Are there any differences in the levels of difficulties to care for the different types of Jade plants? Are Gollums more difficult to care for than normal Jade plants? Are big leaf Jade plants less fussy to care for than small leaf Jades? Thanks

@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 ай бұрын
Hey, I'm sorry I missed this comment. What type of hotter climate? Hot/dry or hot/humid? Is yours plant indoors or outdoors? It all depends on your conditions. If it's indoors, the most important thing is light! Outdoors, light is also important, but also the heat dries it out quicker so you may have to water more often. Just do the taco test for the leaves and that will tell you when it needs water
@geraniumpower6852
@geraniumpower6852 2 ай бұрын
@@EverythingPlants Thanks, Jeff for your reply. It is hot & humid with average day temperature around 32 Celsius and night about 28C. I place them indoors next to a window with indirect light & the average temperature is about 28-29/30C. They are also placed under a grow light. The soil is 50% purmice and 50% succulent soil. I water thoroughly when the leaves are limp but notice the leaves do not go plump even after watering. (I'm not sure if it is due to being indoors, the water in the terracotta pot takes more time to evaporate, thus causing root rot? ) Some new leaves just turn brown for no apparent reasons. Other pots of Jades have leaves with brown spots. (what disease is this? ) The leaves of some pots just drop when touched. What are the possible causes and how to prevent them? I am on the verge of giving up keeping Jade plants but on the other hand, I like these plants very much.
