You are not the only one with the butter knife! I have a dedicated butter knife and a spoon for plant work, and you actually inspired me to buy that little root rake (mine has a pair of tweezers in the handle too). Butter knife is invaluable for repotting and getting plants out of pots when they are stuck! Another thing I recommend 100% is a pair of black Chinese carbon steel shears. They are hard and sharp and can cut through plastic pots easily if necessary (also can be used to prune things).
@EverythingPlantsАй бұрын
I agree with all of this! The only thing you are missing, and I would recommend, is a designated PLANT PENCIL ✏️! I have also looked at Amazon for bonsai style pruning scissors. I just haven't bought anything yet lol

Your jade has always been an inspiration to me and mine! I know it's close to time to prune. I'm mentally preparing. Great tips on repotting and yes, I think "phone a friend" is in order. I sometimes use big rocks to hold it upright until it settles the root system into the new pot.

Congrats on the new job Jeff!!! 🎉 Your jade looks amazing, as always! I've just repotted my biggest jade (nowhere near as big as yours though) and it was pretty much as root bound as yours. Took a serrated bread knife to cut off the outer and bottom fibrous crust, then used a chopsticks to do loosen the inside. I swear it gave a big sigh of relief once I was done! 😂 Next up is my Golem, it's pretty bad too! I'll let both get used to their new home for a month or so and then they'll both get a good prune.

I've got a number of largish jades that haven't been repotted in four or five years, and the soil is very compacted. They're presently in rather shallow 8" W x 4" D terra cotta pots. I pulled one plant out and kind of surprisingly it is not pot-bound. But, I do believe they would benefit from new soil. So I intend to proceed using your method in this video to return them to the same pots with fresh soil. I don't have a nifty root rake like yours, but I'll manage. Thanks.

I recently "bonsai(ed) two huge jade plants. All is going well, new leaves are popping out all over the trunks. Thanks for showing me the gravel type of soil you are using. I purchased a mix of pumis, charcoal, and bark chips. With this being said, I have never potted my jades in just "gravel". I believe you already answered my question regarding how often to water (since it's not in dirt) but watch the leaves for clues that it needs water? Historically when potted in dirt, I'd water about every 10-14 days. So water when leaves get pruney? BTW, what is shown is not my email address... I don't know where that came from.

I think your last video on that specific Jade being repotted was 3+years ago. I love that you're all "holy rootbound" followed by "these are shallow rooted" 🤣 tell that to the plant that ate the soil! Now, these big temp swings are affecting my inside air and my Maranta yesterday yellowed up a lot of leaves, my other Maranta went dormant a few months ago then started again then stopped so I have no clue if it will come back... It is wild to me that despite what feels like fairly even indoor temperatures is still having an effect on certain plants, I guess it's got to do with the pressure and stuff in the air?

Thanks for saying you’re good with questions as I have some! 1) with that substrate, how frequently are you going to water the one you just repotted? 2) Do you recommend repotting and then pruning at a later stage or doing both at the same if time if the plant need pruning? 🪴❤
@EverythingPlants10 ай бұрын
I will still determine if it needs water from the leaves. If they start to feel a bit soft and able to slightly fold them, then it will get some water. I will be pruning mine later as I want the plant to focus on growth of the roots before I prune for branching.
