What great luck we had. We were planning on trying to meet you at the farmers market But when plow day landed on our trip, it worked out beautifully. I will never forget the year we didn’t get enough firewood harvested before winter weather set in. I was probably 9 years old. We had 160 acres, with about ten areas on the opposite side of our creek. A narrow roadbed just wide enough to get the farmall tractor pulling the hay wagon down. We had grain sideboards on the wagon, so we could bring home a much larger load. Snow was flying, bitter cold wind cut right through our gloves. We worked until the wagon couldn’t hold another stick of wood. Starving and ready to get in out of the weather, dad headed up that narrow sloped road, only to have the woodpile shift & over the full load went on its side. You’ve heard that firewood warms multiple times…cutting, splitting, stacking, gathering & taking inside to finally heat the house. Well, that year we added another step, by repacking up that wagon load a 2nd time.

I am 73 years old and come from a family of timber cutters. There are many longstanding jokes among us about farmers with chainsaws. There is plenty of truth to support those jokes. I have no experience with Husqvarna but Stihl and McCulloch was the saw of choice for 'real' timber cutters. Now I have to say that the little Husqvarna you have is a savage and SOMEBODY really knows how to sharpen a chain. It takes a good man to put a keen edge on a chain with a file, but it is another skill altogether to fine tune the rakers for a specific saw and length of bar. SOMEBODY put a real tune on that saw and ran their magic fingers over that chain. AND - you ran that saw like a real pro. So this retired timber cutter gives the farmer five stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art from Ohio PS: I can tell all of this by the sound of the engine and the size and quantity of the sawdust.

My my my. I have cut firewood my entire life for heat.. I am 73 now and this will be the first year without putting up firewood.. I always enjoyed the feeling of cutting stacking and staying warm. Some folks have got tired of it.. I never had negative feelings. Just looking at a huge pile of wood always made me feel good inside. I will sadly miss it this year. I like you always cut up everything branches and all.. I have turned wooden bowls for over 60 some years and they were made from the butt sections of hardwood trees. Stay warm and enjoy your great work..

Fall chores that have to be done. I remember when the neighbors would get together and make firewood. Hard work. Used a rocker saw for cutting the rounds. My dad never owned a chain saw. He hired a neighbor to do tree trimming and cutting down trees. Some things never change when it come to farm work. The way you have everything set up now is sure looking good. The memories you spoke of when you were growing up were great. My grandfather, my dad, and my uncle shared farming together. All summer long getting things ready for the dairy cows and finishing the hogs. My dad had one saying " Don't complain about making firewood when it's -20 degrees and the house is warm". Thanks for sharing.

When I was in elementary school my family lived in a home with a big white hearth fireplace with a huge knotted pine mantle, and my Dad would get a permit to remove fallen trees on BLM land in the spring and summer. We'd spend most of the summers of my youth stocking our fire wood pile along the side of our house. The entire family would, at times, be out out in the forest cutting trees for winter... I believe that's where I got my love for outdoors and nature. I have a very vivid memory of my father splitting wood with his maul axe and me stacking.

Good evening from Switzerland Peter and Hillary. Given all the massive changes the two of you made, I'd be curious to hear more about the reflections you'd have as winter progresses. Did the new winter feeding/pasture arrangement reduce your workload, drain better, keep the cows happier, and warrant the time and money invested (even buying a digger)? I loved seeing all of this coming to fruition, and it was quite the change. I'm keen to see if this had a positive effect, and in what ways life became easier for everyone involved, human and animal. Thank you for keeping my farm dream alive, and giving me the sheer pleasure of cows doing their thing.

He would usually get 2 or 3 cord of wood from a friend of his that delivered it and dad and I would spend a day stacking and sorting it. Dad has two wood burning stoves.
