In this video I’m cutting clear on the Corvette project with HERCULES sanding disc from Harbor Freight. With this sanding disc process you can sand the clear coat with grits starting from 1500 grit to 4000 grit which when done correctly will remove orange peel from the clear coat and leave a smooth finish to be polished smooth easily.

UPK, huge thanks to you for making this video for us. I just paused it where you are saying that after spraying clear, which might look like glass, it will shrink up and a little peel will result. That confirms what I once saw but later doubted, yup, I sprayed what looked like glass but then a day or so later it just was not as fine. Anyway, back to the video, this is so good because it is a product I can go to HF and purchase, and I see how it works and know it is good, well I did not listen to the end but I get the hint it is doing the job. I actually like how it started off slow, not too aggressive. This video is very helpful and you are the king.

Half empty, half full on the whole setup. I've used both the foam Trizact and Hercules film discs (wet). Trizact (1k, 3k, 5k, 8k) seemed good but fairly expensive. I've had just as good or possibly better results with the Hercules 1500 film discs (wet) finishing out with Masterpro foam discs 3k, 5k & 8k. This was before Hercules came out with the foam discs. Would I buy the 3M again? I doubt it. The Hercules don't last long, but they also don't cost anywhere near 3M. To me, a lot of it is gimmicky and geared towards production shops that want to stay machine from start to finish. For the DIY, old fashion muscle power wet sanding to 2500 then into the rotary nets better results.

I may try them that 1500 looked a bit weak. Maybe it would have done better wet not sure. With the polish I use up to 2000 or sometimes 3000 is all I need. I also like my CSI polish because once I used it I wasn't afraid of burning an edge anymore. Other compounds grind away some paint the CSI doesn't it just polishes it up.

with single stage there is greater risk of getting down into the color / metallic. Ideally the clear comes up to the surface as the color / metallic settle but you can't get as thick a clear to sand so I would say be very careful. I also heard single stage is not a durable, probably less uv protection so thinning surface will also be a risk. How about light sanding then spraying on some clear?

Looks like a Harbor Freight version of Mirka's. The first pad 1500, could probably work better with water. Heat is your enemy. Too much heat, the grit can't flush the chips, gets loaded-up, and the paper doesn't cut. I add 2-4 drops of Dawn dish soap to my water sprayer. Works as a surfactant to wet the surface. How 'hard' or 'soft' is your pad? Gonna give these a try soon. Thanks for the great content! Keep it up!
