We get right to work cutting in the driveway to our new shop! With daylight on our side, we complete both the road and the pad for the Quonset Hut. We celebrate this first step of many, along with recent hatching of baby chicks with our first outdoor campfire at the property.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

So look forward to your vids. Love that they pop up outside of the weekends. So much work plus new chicks and Pizza! Love seeing the moose, it is amazing to see how they seem to strip the leaves so delicately given they are such huge animals. Bo and Bandit seem to have settled so well into your new place. They almost seem more relaxed and playful despite all the work going on around them. The vid time seems to go by so quickly sadly, dont want them to end. 😀

The end walls will support and shape the form of the structure. The sheet metal sections have built-in flexibility that must be constrained over a long 60-foot span and the combination of straight and curved panels weakens the integrity of the arch's 40-foot span. Wind could put everything in motion, and snow drifts are irregular, not a good thing. I can't help but love your creativity and adventurous spirit but be careful on this one.

Tip of the day, when dealing with a thick fluid like hydraulic start your pour with the spout at the top and gradually roll the bucket down as your fluid drains, you won’t have the gurgling. Hope that helps.

@vinpepp
@vinpepp Жыл бұрын
Either that, or if you are using the full contents of the can, make a hole in the can top opposite the the spout, it will introduce air, it 'glugs' as the air that is trying to replace fluid through one aperture, which is why it glugs, also then the fluid will empty in half the time.

That picture of Bo on the mug absolutely cracked me up! And those baby chicks were adorable! You guys are making big strides and it's amazing to see this property slowly take shape - by the time you're done adding all these extra buildings (shelter for the saw mill and the shop and I assume maybe a separate garage or something + high tunnel or greenhouse), it will look like a little village from above! Also, what a difference this new place makes just in terms of the ground! I remember when you had to get gravel delivered to your old property because it was a muddy wasteland half the year and now you just have your own gravel right there. I'm excited to see where this goes and really looking forward to seeing your Quonset hut build. It sounds massive!

Sounds like you're dealing with a glacially deposited gravel, which can be really dense and hard to dig in. In 1982 I was an engineer on the construction of a sanitary landfill near Snohomish, Washington. The project primarily excavated around an existing arroyo creating large basins to later be filled with solid waste. This project included rubber liners to trap leachate from the landfill, purification ponds to treat the leachate and ponds to rear trout as proof of water quality. The site consisted of several glacially formed deposits. One area was calcified siltstone and sandstone replete with shell fossils left when it was under the ocean. The calcified siltstone proved to be very dense and hard to remove. The contractor was trying to use his D-9 Cat with a "single tooth ripper" to gouge into the rock. The effect was chipping quarter size flakes with each pass. This D-9 Cat weighs around 50 tons and the "single tooth ripper" is made of hardened steel, 6' in length, 6" thick and varying in width from 2' to 3", in the shape of a tooth. The siltstone required about 50' to 60' of excavation. After a near fatal accident in which the D-9 operator had to jump free in order to avoid the Cat rolling over on top of him, the contractor received permission to use dynamite to remove the siltstone. This is one of my most vivid construction memories. Eric has a natural gift operating that tractor. 🙂

Superb progress, looking good. Chickens look very happy indeed. Proper maintenance on the beast too. You are putting the prep work in to buy yourselves a richly deserved better outcome than most. Loved the "summer" graphic mask too. A joy to watch. Be well all.😉
