Cutting some usable lumber out of firewood using my jointer and my home made bandsaw

If you do any amount of this, you might consider using an inexpensive froe for splitting off slabs, and if you can get your piece secured into a vice, using a drawknife for initial flattening before proceeding to work them on the machines. I'm just getting into green woodworking and doing the same thing with 16-in firewood. My intent is to make small boxes with dovetail joints. My skills kind of suck but it's fun and hardwood lumber is very expensive even here in New England where oak, maple and cherry are plentiful. The idea of sawing off a tree limb and turning a chunk into wood art appeals to me. You seem very clever and creative. Thanks for uploading. Love your home made band saw. I'm 73 and due to some glitch in the cosmic machinery, was born in the wrong century.

Over the past couple of months I have made many trips to the local firewood lot which has a large quantity of walnut. I have found some really decent wood the saw up as workable boards. Recently I got into some nicely figured pieces. After some sawing an sanding this limber is well worth the $10 cost, not to mention the looks I get from the guys splitting the wood. I get really excited when I find a burl that they are unable to split. Pretty pretty wood. Thanks again for the inspiration.

Firewood gets burned. Lumber for woodworking gets woodworked. Usually, the firewood lumber isn't that good a lumber, but some parts of it often are quite nice.

Your ears? I'm a possessor of tinnitus and wouldn't wish it on anyone. I use a taller fence, myself, because it provides more resistance to the firewood twisting and flopping. Otherwise, I admire the work you do.

@scuffle People call it firewood because how it's been processed. To burn wood in a stove or a boiler it's roughly cut to the length of a fire box. Additionally it's usually been split into smaller more manageable pieces. So, when someone refers to it as firewood that's a reference to how it was processed rather than what kind of wood it is.

@molinobeer again... you miss the point... he took a piece of wood that USED to be firewood, and will be using it for WOODWORKING projects... He didn't just take wood, put some square edges on it and STILL had the intention of burning it...

Your right, If only it had accrued to me I believe it would have been a cool video too. I made sure that all the old weathered parts of the table showed so as to make it look as rustic as possible and I left as much of the edges of it as irregular as I could too for the ole pastoral look and to make it look as pioneer made as I could. It came out very sturdy and strong and sits very level. My friend I made it for gets compliments all the time. Maybe next time I can get a picture of it to share.

I admire your skill and ingenuity in the machines that you have built. You have inspired me to build your 14" bandmill so I can try milling my own lumber. How do you deal with drift angle when you resaw on the bandsaw?

a storm brought down a big walnut tree ..my father was going to make fire wood out of it ,,so i did this to about 1/3 of it for small projects. that was 33 years ago i still have some of it..I made about 50 bird houses and 20 or more hanging baskets for flowers..my father always cringed when taking old wood to the planner ..it seems he never had sharp planner blades when he needed it

A lot of people in my area take down trees on their property, have the trunks/branches cut to firewood length sizes, and give away the wood for free. what do you think is the best way to rip the logs, split or saw? And with which tool? (I don't have a jointer, planer, or a band saw, so I'm hoping just to use a jointer jig on my DIY table saw in order to square the wood.) Also, have you ever thought about building a small solar kiln in order to dry the wood faster? i would love to see a video of that since i'm thinking about building one just for firewood size logs.

exexangler you can try splitting with an axe, that's how I did it, but it was a fairly small block of firewood. Flattening is what I did with a plane (as seen in my upload). If you have a jointer or planer, that will go much faster. I didn't make planks out of it, but if you don't have a bad say than you can always use a hand saw. A table saw can also be used. If you know how to work with a circular saw, than can also be used to cut the planks, but than you should make sure to flatten one side as good as possible. And another tricky thing would be clamping of the log. But it is possible if you have a creative mind

I just finished making a rustic table for a friend of mine and I used some beautiful old red oak wood from his firewood pile in his back yard to do it. I did it all, old school too and used no modern metal fasteners or glue. I did all the wood cuts and everything with all hand tools too. Maybe I should have made a video of it for KZbin too. I didnt think of it at the time...

@Matthiaswandel In northern Vermont hardwood trees are fairly common. All of my firewood is hardwood. A notable portion of it is rock maple and some cherry.
