Absolutely right. The U.K prison system is packed full of people who have severe mental health issues and prison service staff aren't equipped to deal with them so they end up dead or severely self-harming when I reality they should be in mental health care facilities, but they don't because there is nowhere to put them.

It's a sad fact, that different kind of mentally ill persons and not mentally ill ones ("normal" criminals, homeless a.s.o) are mixed, and even worse, no one cares! I.e. people suffering postraumatic disorder or depression after losing a family-member or going trough a divorce or survivors of a catastrophy shouldn't get mixed with drug-/alcohol-addicts or pedophiles or bank-robbers, unfortunately the psychiatry-system (at least the one in my country in central Europe) does NOT CARE about it at all. So, how can we expect, that politicians are interested in funding the hospitals enough to prevent failure and "slip-throughs"? By putting normal people without any mental illness into those hospitals by statal force, in order to make the public see, the hospitals need more money? So, be careful about what you're asking for, it could backfire!

So many heartbreaking stories in mental health care. I’m not sure how these decisions are made about funding, but you shouldn’t have to be a socialist to care about other people and what they go through.

I had to wait over a year for NHS treatment in England. Certain types of care that the NHS England used to own and send people to, like long-term day centres, are now means tested. If you can't see it, it doesn't really matter. The rich don't care, they go private.

Several years ago the budget was cut for State funding for several mental institutions here in Colorado. Over 300 people (I'm guessing the numbers were much higher) were ejected and put out on the streets. Guess what? Crime went up. Suicide went up. Homelessness was the main issue because 100's of people were camping on the rivers of large cities just to TRY to find a place to stay. A few groups tried to hand out blankets and sandwiches but they were stopped - by the cities' officials and then the police. These "campers" were forced to leave their ONLY place to live by their local police departments. More money for prisons? Not a problem. Gotta love it.

Care in the community is a very valid idea. It can help, IF the funding is there. It seems cruel to effectively imprison mentally ill people in institutions, no matter how well staffed and caring they are. Surely we aren't talking about the criminally insane all the time? People with real mental health problems are all too often sidelined and abandoned to a life of hell in the community. They are at risk themselves, NOT a risk to others!

Muslims have extremists just like Christians have the KKK. Do you think of all Christians in the same way as the KKK? I imagine not. So why do you do the same for Muslims? Is it easier to tar billions of people with the same brush just so you can point the finger and say where the problem lies, wipe the sweat from your brow and congratulate yourself on figuring it all out before pouring yourself another can of stella?

For the second time in eight years I've just passed through mental health services without so much as touching the sides, appropriate I suppose, when you're feeling like shit. I'm not likely to kill anyone except myself so I guess that vindicates the continuing cuts to adult social care. Mental health, like most other public services is no longer fit for purpose. It's comforting to know the mentally ill are being treated just like everyone else. BTW keep up the good work JP

Tories cant understand mental health because there's no numbers involved. Neither can modern medicine help a lot of the time. We've alienated ourselves from exploring our own psyche with hallucinogens like we used to with shamanic rituals. Belief is a powerful thing and sometimes powerful experiences can make us genuinely believe we're cured. When we believe we're being healed a lot of the time we actually are healed to some extent which is why they have to test against placebos by using controls because placebos can actually have effects. We're a society lacking in spirituality which goes hand in hand with mental health problems (that aren't caused by physical malfunctions in the brain). You cant put a value on care so it goes out the window in the only thing tories look at which is budgets until we end up as a society of psychopaths living in perfectly cuboid grey concrete structures with no greenery in site and going to work like rats in a tube to make up for a number imbalance that was caused by banker wankers fucking around with data sheets.
@NymeriaMeliae8 жыл бұрын
Tories don't care about mental health unless it affects them personally. Don't expect anything spent on mental health unless some big donor to the party threatens to withdraw funding and the newspapers threaten to back the opposition unless the Tories do more on mental health. Simples.
@salparadise12208 жыл бұрын
If you put people in a position where they can barely earn enough to keep a roof over their heads, yet alone actually participate in the glorious spending spree that is modern society and make the welfare system aggressive and nasty, whilst bombarding them with infantilised media and endless scare stories, it's little wonder that mental health problems are on the increase. Add to that cuts in funding for mental health care, plus a discipline riddled with nonsense and fairy story explanations and the results are quite predictable and are to be seen in our jails (where huge numbers of people are sent to keep them off the streets - jails are the new asylums) and on our streets on a daily basis. Government doesn't care, they're too busy grovelling at the feet of big business, who see no profit that can be entered into a spreadsheet, in looking after people struggling with a vile environment.
@FirefoxisredExplorerisblueGoog8 жыл бұрын
The fact that you equate mental health with psychopathy and spiritualism tells me that you haven't got a clue what you're talking about. Mental health is a complicated issue BECAUSE it's not a single-issue single-solution type of thing. Many people need specialized care in order to recover. Also, being afflicted by a mental illness doesn't make you a psychopath. Psychopathy =/= psychosis.

I agree with your mental health assessment but Islam does have some pretty regressive ideas.
@Pred8orRock88 жыл бұрын
The ideas, well obviously there is the opinions on women, homosexuals and sexual violence but also the quran is full of stories about how just and right it is to kill kafir (non-muslims). There are some pretty horrendous stories, like Mohammed killing Jews by the hundred (I think at one point he beheads 444 jewish men women and children in the town square). The old testament contains these stories also but most Islamic nations are third world shit holes and those that aren't like Katar and Saudi Arabia fund extremism because they can act with impunity to adhere with there ideology without danger to themselves, Like evangelical Christians funding the church in Uganda and causing the death of probably hundreds of homosexuals. Islam in the west does a lot to influence the mentally ill by promising paradise if they commit Jihad, like the Paris terrorists earlier in the year. the only reason they can continue is because anybody (including ex-Muslims) that point it out are labeled racist. I hope I didn't come across ranty or such and if your curious I can point you towards ex-Muslim channels that are far more informed than I.

Disagree with the point that hospitals shouldn't be in debt, and that the solution should just be to give them more money. They very well could be poorly run, and they are failing for that reason.
@ejcmoorhouse8 жыл бұрын
That is a valid point but considering that many budgets haven't increased, and some have decreased as money is spent elsewhere. And prices are increasing and their is greater demand on NHS services. The short of money is a the more logical outcome. And in order avoid poorly run hospitals I think they should face an ofsted style inspection and they do.
@GraveMistakeGames8 жыл бұрын
A lot of times the budgets are set so the hospitals do fail. Easier to swing the public in favour of overt privatization if we say they are costing the public lots of money!
