Cutting Osage Orange and Mulberry! Prep For Spring Planting

Helping out the neighbor cutting back the overgrown field edge. Plus getting some firewood in the process.

It’s worse this time of year because the sap is rising right now. Yeah I have a pretty good deal with this farmer. He always calls and offers but says no hard feelings if I don’t want stuff. He gets free labor and I get free wood/storage and the run of his land. It’s a win win. Hope you had a great Easter too Obie👊🏻

Yes it is! I like that the farmer always calls me when he has something available on his land. He owns and leases a lot of land that is all local to me so I’m sure grateful for the calls. After I ended the video the tree service guy did show up with a load of Oak! I think it’s gonna work out this time. Thanks for watching Jimbo👊🏻

I am near semi retiring and have helped a farmer/ friend harvest for 2 solid months for the last 10 years. I am in the same boat for first dibs also. Problem is he's an hour away to his farms and leases from my home base to haul the wood home. Want to go with bundles only. We'll see.👍🤔

Osage sure if a different kinda animal. Like Midwest commented I have never cut it without bleeding myself 😂Branches are full of thorns! Its sap is like glue! It’s almost best to cut and let it set before handling it. Thanks for watching Kenny👊🏻

I would say not to wish for it! It is a very frustrating tree to have in your woods😂 The branches are full of thorns and you need a dozer to penetrate it. Very high in BTU but needs to be burned in moderation! It’s considered a nuisance tree around here. Thanks for watching Brandon👊🏻

Most farmers will allow you to cut hedge off their fields. I cut a lot of it for firewood. But I prefer to cut it in the winter the sap is down and the extra layers help combat the thorns. Sounds like you’re in a great arrangement with your neighbor farmer where you’re doing him a favor and getting some firewood and he’s allowing you to store your wood in return.

You are absolutely right on the Hedge and the arrangement with the farmer. Usually we would cut in the fall but the farmer just got this new attachment for his skid loader. Sap is definitely running! Thanks for watching Jeff👊🏻

That was more than I thought you cut on the trailer , never dealt with that stuff but I believe you on the heat output , I cut an oak one time that a guy pulled out of a pond .., when I burned that thing it got crazy hot in the stove , and I did not sell that one I savored it on really cold evenings and days. Yeah this Hedge is plentiful. I wound up cutting three more trees back after the camera stopped rolling. I couldn’t stop😂 The farmer even said you did too much! He really appreciated it. Thanks for watching and commenting brother👊🏻🍻

That sap looks like elmer’s glue! I loaded up my outdoor boiler with osage a few years ago and it warped the front door shield. It’s like 1/2 steel or something crazy. A little bit of osage goes a LONG way!

Looks like glue and works like glue! My gloves were stuck together after I took them off🤣Yes a little goes a long way for sure. We just cut about a1/3 cord for our own personal use. Yeah I knew it was great for long bows but not too educated on its history. I’ll have to look it up. I always heard they planted it as fence rows for property line barriers. You would have to own a tank to penetrate it🤣 Thanks for watching Greg👊🏻

Yes I do. He has already pushed the brush and thanked me and said I did too much!! I realize he’s getting the better end of the stick, but what goes around comes around. Really hot burning firewood, go easy when adding it to your fire, also, that Osage makes really nice accent pieces for woodworking projects

Oh yeah! Its BTU rating is 32 and it’s only used in moderation! I’ve heard of people warping their wood furnace with it. Thats why we don’t sell it. It’s just used for our own personal use in our garage. 1 piece at a time🤣 Thanks for watching Chris👊🏻

Congratulations on your channel! Well deserved! This Osage is very hard to work with. Thorns on the branches and almost impossible to snap even the smallest limbs. Oak is 24 BTU Cherry is 20 and this Osage is 32!! It will absolutely warp or melt your wood burner if you’re not careful. Appreciate ya watching Phil👊🏻

I learned that lesson with hedge years ago. One lean winter, I was burning some old hedge fence posts. The stove got super hot, making scary noises. One piece at a time from now on.

@@toddsoutsideagain would it burn wicked hot with the stove fully choked down? Years ago I had a Vermont casting vigilant, cleaned it night B4 this happened. Woke up bout 2:30 to pee , got to bathroom and was "oh God it's hot". 930sq ft ranch. Stove in living room off kitchen. Thermometer on far kitchen wall from stove. It said 92. Didn't have stove fully closed down but mostly. I had loaded it mostly w blk locust. No more than 1 or 2 pieces of it since

@@brandonhoad9033 yes this hedge burns very hot with the stove choked down as well. Black locust in our area is rated 26 BTU Hedge is rated 32! That why we don’t sell it. Ya gotta use both species in moderation for sure.

Yeah they are a mix of Oak, Cherry, Walnut, Mulberry and a lot of Osage. Osage is about 50% The waterway on the other hand was a bust. All Willow with a couple Cottonwoods. Thanks for watching Ken👊🏻
