Maggie's Piece is the name of this field. It is north of Highway 124, two miles to the west of Prescott Washington, USA. This is what we around here call the Skyrockets. It's place where combines and lives are lost, and we have an interesting job trying to get the grain in the bin. Welcome to Southeastern Washington winter wheat farming. I hope you enjoy the ride. Have a good one.
This is a look back at Harvest of 2023 and would technically be an addition to "Grain Hogs Season 2".

Poland! That is where my youtuber friend lives @matheomisiac. He makes tractor videos in both english and polish. Thank you for your comment! Even here, for it to be this steep is rare. There are many hills, but the Skyrockets are the steepest around here.

Great Video Trevor, that was steep! that spot where the combine was bouncing was amazing I can see how with the width of the wheel base and the tyres the combine slides rather than rolls, thanks for sharing

Thanks 👍. Yeah, id rather it slid than rolled for sure

Merry Christmas! I love sharing my days in the cab and showing how we do it out in the steep stuff. Even if i dont drive these hills, ill keep recording the guys that do this work though. I recorded a ton of stuff this year and im trying to get it out while i have time off and get some other youtube videos going. Thanks for the support

Trevor, thanks for another very impressive video. Please keep them coming to us. In a dangerous slide, would you push the header tight down against the ground to hold the combine-?
@TrevorStruthers
@TrevorStruthers 7 ай бұрын
I found that the weight of the header helps with traction. When it is resting on the ground, its harder to get traction. Maybe i would push it all the way to the ground and dig in if it helped. Seatbelt on and id ride it out. Lots of people talk of jumping out. That sounds disastrous if the machine got you under it.

I have a friend that works at hillco and he was telling me that all the combines have some sort of leveling. there are very few here.(Ks)

Can’t you see it’s got self leveling?
@TrevorStruthers

I believe the levelling that all CASE combines have is in the sieve. So inside the combine it levels. To truly level though it needs a hillco system i believe.

Thank you for the video - that's very steep! In the fields in which you farm, what is the greatest elevation change from the top of the field to the bottom? Was curious. 😉
@TrevorStruthers

Some fields, maybe 500 feet difference in altitude. Ive been in a grain cart that had to go two miles and down about 500 feet or more in altitude to get to the trucks. With no exhaust brake…that is a slow trip. Most tractors out here have jake brakes because the altitude shifts. Thanks for watching!

What’s it like for washouts on the side hills and gully’s from heavy rains? Don’t see much of it in your video.

It happens, but it happened a lot more back when it wasn't "no-tilled." Conventional lead to this being a lot more powdery soil than it is now.

That looked crazy steep even on video. How long have those hills been farmed? I’d think side hill is a rather new technology or has it been around longer than I’m assuming?

They started farming in this area in the 1880's I believe.

Yeah, my fathers fathers family did around the 1880s start farming out here. My grandmas family was here in the missionary days and Fort Walla Walla even before that. Mule teams could go places we cant today. You can see the lines where it used to be farmed even further off the “cliff” or hillside than we do now. Theres a furrow out on some pieces that i dare not take such a big and expensive machine. Thanks for the question joel. It could probably and will probably be a video this winter

Would tracks be more stable?
@guitodd
@guitodd 7 ай бұрын
In our experience... no. Better for not causing 'compaction' of the soil for the tractor work and seeding... but pretty bad for lateral traction. We'll see what Trevor thinks about them.

Yeah, they arent worth a damn out here in the soft hills. They make a mess of the hills and dont work as well as the diamond tread tires. A farm i worked for in 21 demo’d a tracked CASE and it couldnt go where the regular ones could. Maybe if its flat.
@TrevorStruthers
@TrevorStruthers 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, they aren’t any good for our situation here. I hear the boys in the south like them for in the mud, but we deal with a soft silty dusty soil that erodes quickly from any traffic over it.

How steep is the percent slope there?

We fogure its in the lower to upper 30s in degrees. I always joke and say its 32nd degree (freemason joke) but we unload on the go up to about 28 degrees if the field allows it. Some of the fields are all too steep to unload on the go.
