@@RockhoundingLife yes there are a lot! There's tropical trees like palm wood and cycads. And metasequoia/redwoods. And temperate forest hardwoods like oak and sycamore. I've identified quite a few just from watching all the montana rockhounding channels. I study and work with trees for a living so it's very interesting to me. So many different climate changes in the last 200 million years in North America.
@RockhoundingLife
@RockhoundingLife 2 жыл бұрын
@@mitchgillilan It's super interesting. We have tropical cycads here in Nova Scotia from the Jurassic. They are limb casts though, not petrified. We also have early carboniferous trees (lepidodendron, sigilaria) that are carbon film type fossils.

My great grandfather carried out a huge stump of petrified wood (it took him several days) from the Petrified Forest (in the1800s) and it has been passed down in the family to me, since I've been picking agates and other rocks for over 50 years. I've thought about polishing the top because it has amazing colors and contrast, but it will be left untouched. I've found that round pieces of pet wood do well when cut lengthwise and both pieces of a beautiful thicker one about a foot long are in my personal pet wood display case.

@@RockhoundingLife I've been there several times over the years. Even if you have to drive to remote locations, do not pick where others frequent. That goes without saying, but with so many people visiting, 4.8 million this past year, do your homework and get away from people. The rivers flowing in and through Yellowstone that are outside the boundaries of the park can be just as good, if not better. The best pet wood I've ever found, and the highest quality of the jasper I've seen is in OR. My son in law and daughter lived there in the past and in the right areas it is amazing. Such a diverse state as well. But, for the most part, I've always been a Lake Super agate picker.

What a great shine. The combo of laps worked out really well for you. There a good video on lapidary saw dressing from Currently Rockhounding you might like. Montana Rock is the best. Yes I have seen Jared's video on that. It was very interesting. I usually get a long time out of my sintered blades. I have a grinding stone that I use to sharpen them. It works great at removing access metal and exposing more diamonds.

Daaaaang. That long one would make an amazing small shelf if it was slabbed about an inch thick. The patterns are insane. I have the same saw and just fired it up in my basement. I noticed it sprays pretty good so I made a plexiglass enclosure. Have you noticed any excessive water flying off yours? I've never seen a vibrating lap... and holy moly... That thing is AWESOME.
@RockhoundingLife

I don't have an issue with splashing water. So you have the splash guard that came with it? It is good for preventing t Any excess splashing.
@GrandTreasureBay
@GrandTreasureBay 2 жыл бұрын
@@RockhoundingLife I built the plexiglass enclosure. I noticed mine was spraying some water to the sides when the water hit the rock from the blade and some water was spraying out towards the back of the saw. The plexiglass enclosure was something I built myself. KZbin doesn't have a good function to post in the comments what it looks like, but I have a video where I cut some thunder eggs and I show it a bit.

Beautiful stuff. Can you tumble that smaller, favorite piece? I found when I put on a new blade, I cut my agates first because a not so sharp blade might add some fractures. And I think if you cut slow, the blade last longer, maybe. Love you videos.
@RockhoundingLife
@RockhoundingLife 2 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing about tumbling it, but I don;t want it to get too rounded. I want to preserve the look. It would be perfect for a vibratory tumbler but my lot-o tumbler is too small.

Those look great. I suggested to Kim a couple of weeks ago that se make tiles out of pet wood and do a backsplash or something with them, I can't imagine the amount of work that would be. It would look really cool though. Every time I start one of your vids, for a quick second when I hear your tumbler in the background, I think you're getting hailed on or sleet. First time, I was almost halfway through the video before I figured it out.
@RockhoundingLife
@RockhoundingLife 2 жыл бұрын
Ha!! Yes the tumbler is always running. I actually try to remember to turn it off while filming but forget most times. It's background noise that i'm so used to now. You're right that is an awesome idea to make tile out of the petrified wood. It would be very cool but also very time consuming. Probably good for a hobby side hustle. Not mass production.
