The beautiful Bela, the Samoyed, is back! She is here to help us demonstrate how to cut thick dog nails for our larger breeds. We are not only going to cut and clip, we are also going to be grinding, to make sure to leave the nails silky smooth and safe for the whole family. For a detailed lecture on nail trimming, please see our video on Clipping Black Dog Nails at: • Clipping Black Dog Nai... . Happy clipping, we're glad you joined!

Gina thanks for the video using the Oster Gentle Paws grinder as there are not specific instructions on the outside packaging to allow a purchaser to determine if this product is what they want to use. So far I have just been clipping my dogs nails but I wanted to begin using a grinder as well and now since I’ve seen your video I feel confident in using the Oster. I have large dogs and have always not only tied the leash to a post to keep them close while clipping their nails as you are in the video but also I always put a cage style rubber muzzle on them to prevent any possible biting if they get scared or too uncomfortable. This helps me feel confident too be able to get the job done more quickly and efficiently and reduce stress time on my dogs too. And of course I always give a treat and praise after. Thanks for the video! The demonstration is just what I was looking for!

That's great! I am so happy that the video gave you the confidence to add grinding to your nail clipping - it makes such a big difference in taking those rough edges off. It sounds like you are doing everything right, especially focusing on the comfort of not only your pets but also yourself (which is key to keeping the stress level down, as you clearly are aware!) Thanks so much for your kind comment, and good luck with clipping and grinding your big babies' nails! 💕🐾

Gina - Thanks for this great video! I was not aware that there is a ‘safety’ cut line. After you have done that, is there anything to help push the quick back? I need to shorten my dog’s nails and have been trying to clip them every weekend. Will the nail grow out again to have the ‘safety’ cut area?

Hi Tiffany! Yes, you are completely right: if you cut your pup's nails regularly and close to the quick, the quick will recede. But not by v much, there will always be a substantial vein and nerve that is there to feed the nail (claw, really). Because I hate to cut too short (groomers typically cut over 20K nails a year!), I leave a few millimeters of safety and then grind closer. But u can go too far with a grinder also - it helps to keep the nail diagram in your head. Up close, you'll see the color change at the core of the nail - if u see white, it's dead nail, if it's looking a bit "wet", you are really close. If your pup is having serious problems, you can see a vet and they can cut and cauterize them short under anesthesia (but yikes, right?) Good luck, you've got this! Thanks 4 watching! 😍

I keep buying new clipper but there not sharp enough for my dogs nails . My dogs nails are twice as long and thick as any I’ve seen in videos.

Hi, I'm so glad you asked this question! There is an inside brand that Groomers know, but they are hard to find. They will cut through any dog nail, especially the big size (but the regular size works for me, and I do some hefty nails!) The brand is Aussie Dog. I am working with them to try to resell directly, so keep an eye out for that. But until then, here's one of the places that sells the regular size. You will not be disappointed, these things can cut thru a penny, no kidding. Good luck, hope this helps (I am sure it will!) www.petedge.com/aussie-dog-nail-clipper. 😊

Same here. I have bought at least 5 different brands and none of them have been sharp enough to cut through them
