I bought a bottle after hearing about it from a book and it's pretty good. Got it shortly after starting my whiskey journey. Not too complex. Mainly just malt flavor which helps me identify it from other flavors. I definitely prefer my Ardbeg but I appreciate Cutty Sark.

When I was a kid my Uncle George (who was a navy man WW2) used to drink Cutty Sark. Now I know I need to get me a bottle.

Cutty Sark was my fathers favorite. It was perceived as a higher end product 50+ years ago and was probably much better than bottom shelf version we have today. The blended malt is actually pretty good.

The recipe is exactly the same in 2024 as it was in 1924. The only ingredient change is the substitution of Bunnahabhain for Tamdhu whiskies. The Tamdhu brand was part of Glenrothes distillery, so when Cutty switched from Glenrothes to Glen Moray, it no longer had access to Tamdhu, so it switched to Bunnahabhain, which is nearly identical, according to "experts." The reason Cutty went from top shelf in the 1920s to bottom shelf in the 2020s is more to do with marketing and competition. At the time it was introduced in the US, the quality of most brands of "Scotch Whiskey" was abysmal, so Cutty didn't have to be the **best** brand, it just had to be better than the rest, which it was. Being a blend, it had a consistent flavor from bottle to bottle, year after year, unlike single malts. Cutty Sark advertisements were everywhere you looked for decades, until Scotch sales in the US hit an all-time low in the 1980s and 90s. When those sales rebounded with Millennials in the 2000s, they looked down on blended whisky, so brands like Cutty were relegated to the bottom shelf. Which is a shame, because Cutty is probably the easiest sipping Scotch brands on the shelf, and is a damned fine value that deserves better placement in today's market.

Enjoyable as always. Maybe it’s the history nerd in me, but I do like these episodes that touch on history. Also as soon as you mentioned Churchill the first thing that came to mind was that old video where you and Rex tried drinking like him for a day. I am wondering though what Irish whiskey would be appropriate for talking about the Dublin fire? Can’t remember what year exactly it was, but the tour guide said that was proof why no one should ever drink shitty whiskey

The Prohibition Edition is, well, interesting (it tastes really good, but I didn't appreciate the fact that my head hurt the next morning, which isn't something that really happens to me anymore). The regular Cutty Sark is just, well, average. Just your typical Blended Scotch.

The "real McCoy" origin that I am familiar with regards Elijah McCoy, the inventor of a self-lubricating system for steam engines, which was considered so reliable that those wanting to purchase it would request "the real McCoy" as opposed to systems created by competitors. I suppose the takeaway is that, if you want to have a reputation as a trustworthy businessman with a high-quality product, McCoy is the surname you wish you had.
