I had to do this last month on a 2009 Forester. I'm not sure you how were able to get that off with such ease, I had to purchase a Company23 Sundial Bearing Carrier Tool. For around $50, it saved me a lot of headache. I had to use an impact wrench to get it off, even using that Company23 tool (it says not to, I had no choice, it wouldn't budge without it), but I was at least able to remove it and put a new seal on. For anyone doing this, just make certain you count the turns and mark it, video the part being removed in case you lose count!!!

How did this work out as far as longevity? I am doing a similar job on an 04 sti and I learned that you are supposed to do these one side at a time, I did it the exact way you did and im sure you noticed when the driver side cap comes off the diff slumped downward. Supposedly if this happens you are supposed to set up the backlash and the prelaod from scratch and requires the trans to be removed. My caps needed to be replaced as they got mangaled coming out they were crazy tight. I am waiting for the correct seals and I have to put it back together and setting backlash and preload can be really time consuming. I was wondering how this worked out in the long run. Hopefulyl This question doesn't give you nightmares o_o Also I love the valve as a seal install tool lol

If you open Cape 2, the pinion will go down later, that's normal After changing the seal inside the cape, tighten the cape a little towards the passenger, then place it next to the driver. Tighten it a little bit and it will match later

@@Autoenginecheck thanks for the reply. I just want to make sure the diff lasts long after the repair

Funny how some people are able to get the seals out with a seal puller. Did they change the design🤷♂️ i had to do this as well, as the seal is put in from the inside

I've just been trying to make sense of this. Answer is yes. The older gearboxes (1999 legacy manual in my case) have the stub axles in the differential. When you remove the axle you have to drive out a roll pin. Next you'll need to remove the sundial completely, very much counting the turns. Replace the seal on the inside of the sundial then refit the sundial ensuring that it goes back to exactly the same place.

@@jamescross2229 how does that not throw out the preload, mark it with paint and hope for the best? 😂

@klord-is9ft hi. Yes that's the theory. By winding the sundial back in the same amount it should end up inserted the same amount and hence provide the same preload as before it was removed. I actually tightened ours about 4 teeth further (on each side) as our gearbox is 250 thousand kms old and is no doubt slightly 'baggy'. It's crude compared to the Subaru procedure but I didn't fancy building a custom cradle and taking the box out just to change some axle seals! Stopping the axle seals leaking onto the exhaust ( and failing inspection) was well worth it! It's my son's first car and we're on a budget.

I did this to 06 forester with 4eat, and no need to take the bearing pretensioner off, just pry the oil seal off and press in a new, there is no resess or lip or anything there, just heads up for anyone with similar setup
