Once the rotor is off, there are holes in the hub that you can stick a long 1/2 extension through that will keep it from turning while you remove the axle nut.

You don't have to remove all that stuff. Just remove the axle nut and two strut bolts. You don't really need to remove the caliper either. Once the two strut bolts are removed, The whole assembly will rotate down including the attached hub bearing. Then give the axle a tug and you'll hear the pop noise releasing slip ring. If necessary you can use a pry bar like you mentioned. You may need to stand on the strut to help rotate it downward. Hope this helps people do this job much simpler than this video.

You still didn't have to remove the ball joint and other stuff. Same principle applies to removing axle shaft and the bearing.

The caliper and rotor comes off if removing the bearing. The ball joint and sway link is not necessary. The two strut mounts are what's supposed to be removed to pivot the assembly down. If only removing axle, you can leave on the caliper and rotor and just remove the two strut bolts and pivot the whole assembly down. Hope this help future viewers.

Great vid has helped me about 75 percent in stuck on removing the ball joint. Any suggestions on how to disconnect the ball joint to the spindal? I need help plz I can get the ball joint remover in it unless I remove the tie rod which I don't want to do.... This vid has been extremely helpful. Just that ball joint removal is what's causing me a headache

Ok watchin ur vid how the hell u get the axle out and how long it took u??? Um currently workin on a 99 regal gs. Been tryna get this axle out gor the past two days. Even rented a pulley. On the New one theres a clip at the end of it. Is the chip on the old one holdin the axle in the trans????

I used a prybar and twisted it against the axle and differential cover to get it moving. try rotating the axle a quarter turn and then pull again. I believe that clip is all that it holds it in.

Yes you'll have to remove the hub. If it is an older one there is a good chance it'll come out in two pieces so you'll have to replace it. If it's newer you may be able to get away with using it again as long as you don't have to hammer it out

it's a front wheel drive car the axles won't rotate while loosening the hub nut so no need to do the pry driver in the rotor and they're irr 117 ft lbs so it breaks loose pretty easy

It will be very similar. The main components to the front suspension are basically the same with a few improvements over the years.

Just so you know next time you don't have to take all that brake stuff off or the sway bar stuff or the lower ball joint... All you wave to do is take off the axle nut, tire and the two bolts at the bottom side of the strut that connect to the upper part of the control arm... you then can pry out the shaft from the trans. Then push the trans end of the shaft back beside the trans and firewall area and then push it out of the bearing and control arm... Hope you understand what I saying...

I'm pretty sure that you're supposed replace those wheel bearing bolts with new ones and i think you're supposed to use 2 crowbars ( one on each side of the axel ) so that when you pop it out, there's equal pressure on each side otherwise, if you're only applying pressure to one side of the axel, you could damage the spring clip and spring clips for those axels ain't sold at autozone they're only sold at dealerships and they occasionally change the design of CV axels that's why sometimes new ones look completely different than the old one that you're removing from your car but in your case you're probably right there probably was some dumbass who installed the wrong axel but anyway, you should always replace those spring clips on those axels otherwise, you might pull the old axel out, and realize that you damaged the spring clip and if you don't have a new replacement clip for you're new axel, the old damaged clip might result in axel failure so basically, you're gambling doing that job without having a new spring clip because you may, or may not, experience axel failure it all depends on if you damage the spring clip when removing the old axel that's why i recommend using a crowbar on each side of the old axel when applying equal pressure to pop it out

Just replaced both the CV Axles on a 2006 Grand Prix Supercharged, following your advise. The axle nut loosens and is removed first because the Grand Prix wheels have an access cap. Then loosen he lugs, and jack the front end up. The toughest part of this entire job was getting the lower ball joint to release. After that, smooth job. Thanks for the video.
