I know people keep telling you to adjust with a warm barrel. That’s fine and true on a target rifle. Not on a hunting rifle. You need to know where it’s going to hit cold. Since you don’t get the option to warm up the barrel when your hunting. If you do you probably will come home empty handed. Keep doing it the way you always have.

Wanted to say thanks for featuring the .35 Whelen. It’ll take just about any animal in North America. It was one of Elmer Kieth’s favorites. Just a note, most shooters and hunters out west here would normally opt for the 200 yard. “0”. A 270, 30/06, 280 Rem. or even a 7mm mag. would only be 1/2 to 2 inches high at a hundred, dead on at 200, and only 6 to 7 inches low at 300. This will give a practically point blank range trajectory for anything within that distance. Thanks again for your great videos. God bless, Ken

They asked Elmer Keith why he shot such large-caliber rifles. Keep in mind much of Elmer's hunting was in heavy timber in northern Idaho and the Bob Marshall Wilderness of Montana. His crude yet simple reply: "They bleed better with two holes."

Glad to see you got a .35 Whelen, one of the best hunting cartridges ever developed. Please shoot through paper plates, water jugs, clay blocks and all kinds of other stuff. Don't judge the power by the recoil, you have a great muzzle brake on that rifle.

I've a Remington 35 wheelen and I handload for it. Rooster is correct, if I load it to max pressure with a barns xxx 285grain it will leave me blue from my neck to my ribs. Ive used it on hogs in Warrington GA. My load on 14 hogs so far is DRT . Not one has moved further than 20 yards from point of impact. Most just dropped right there. 35 can be handloaded with 180grain .357 caliber pistol rounds for light work and ease of recoil. I've hunted them on squirrel, racoon, opossum, for camp meat. I carry one magazine with 357 copper jacketed hollowpoint, one magazine with Remington 250 grain led nose and one magazine in the rifle of my handloads for hunting. The rifle is accurate and nostalgic wouldn't trade it for love nor money.

I decided on an 80 yard zero for the average distances i knew I'd be shooting in some hardwood treetops and a couple plots I'd been watching. It proved flat and effective for 180gr Barnes TTSX. I have wanted a 35 Whelan for years. Finally pulled the trigger on a 2016 limited edition Remington Model 700 CDLSF when it came out in 2016. It groups all of the ammo I have for it well. The 250 gr Remington Core Lokt Express are loaded very conservative. They seem similar to my 700 ADL 30/06 shooting 180's. The Buffalo Bore 225 gr Sierra Game Kings @2800 are a completely different animal. Comes off the sandbags on the bench. More recoil than my Win Mod 70 300 Win shooting 180's. I would say Its similar to a 338 Win Mag being it slings 225's at the same velocity. It's a very underrated cartridge no doubt.

Hornady Superformance is outrageous. My 22" Handi-Rifle clocks just under the rated 2900 fps, 200 gr SST, bores 3/8" holes in 3/8" thick target steel. Both Hornady and Federal Fusion are cheaper than Remington ammo.

Hey WTW, have you tried a 2 shot sight-in ? Take your initial initial shot on paper (like you did), then put the cross hairs back in the bulls eye, hold the rifle still, look through the scope & adjust the cross hairs to the bullet hole. Move the rifle back to the bulls eye & fire a 2nd shot. You should now be right on the bulls eye.

Hand load for your Whelen. 30-06 brass is cheap and easy to find. My father and I both hunted here in Alaska for over 50 years with one. Even the biggest bears fell to the Whelen and most were one shot kills. Always used 250 grain Horniday spire points and never had a failure. I think some of the new premium bullets might work even better. I have a number of more powerful rifles but in the end the old Whelen is what always seems to go hunting.

Rifle seems to shoot well. I’d suggest you shoot it without the rest before you go hunting. It will make a difference on your zero. I’ve had 35s before. Yours has a brake and that makes a big difference in recoil but the full power 45-70 definitely kicks more.

You may need it for black bear soon the way they are wandering thru downtown areas in TN lately. Even had couple go to college at ETSU for short visits. Glad to see some of older calibers back. Thanks

You are right, Remington ammo is weak but likely better for dear any way. Try shooting it without the muzzle brake. Big difference.

I tell you what, I do a lot of long range 500-1000+ shooting, and I’ve had to work very hard to get the 100yd groups you seem to get with every rifle you buy! Shooting cheap ammo to boot! I love to see it but I am green with envy!

Hoo_Tee don't you know you adjust the scope over to the bullet hole. I packaged up some wheel weights and stuffed them in the stock went from 7lbs to 9lbs a little heavy but tamed the recoil way down. I mostly shoot off a bench anyway. My son's name was Waylon and I pronounce Whelen with the e instead of the a. Anyway super duper glad your showing the Whelen. By the way it was designed for shooting big cats. Phs were having trouble with the big dangerous game cartridges passing through the cats and not doing much damage. Some tried the 30 06 and got ripped apart. Colonel Whelen wanted something better than the 30 06 .

I already bought the 45-70 and 44 Mag after watching your videos, was intrigued enough on the 35 Whelen..I bought one ( Its still in jail until next week ) , and was mandatory to get reloading equip for it...to shoot cheaper and hot rod this baby up. Found PRIMED 35 Whelen brass cheaper than unprimed, grabbed a 3 die set from Redding...already had shellholder/powder...grabbed Hornady FTX 200's and Speer HotCore 250's ( Everybody said that was THE 35 Whelen bullet ) ...will have it all loaded up by the time I get her out of FFL jail 😄 Debating what cartridge I get next in one of these Scouts...love em.

CVA has a one piece mount and ring for their break action rifles. I have both but I like the idea of removing one possible moving point.

Not critcisizing your scope adjustment procedure. I sell a lot of rifles and scopes, and there are a lot of options for both out there. I did notice your particular Leupold has 1/4 MOA adjustments. If you are sighting in at 100 yards, and you want the bullet impact to move about an inch in any direction, it's going to take four clicks at that distance. I imagine in the last two months since this video was posted, you've had the chance to dial it in more. Thanks for sharing your video. I'm definitely considering adding a CVA single shot to the stable. Just trying to pick a caliber I don't already have. It might be a coin toss between the 450 Bushmaster, and the 35 Whelen. You definitely have a great game stopper there. Good luck hunting, and stay safe out there.🇺🇸

That muzzle brake reduces a lot of recoil from that 35. It usually recoils at about 27 ft lbs without it.

I have a 700 CDL that I have been shooting for 20 years and I won't change. The cartridge is devastating on deer and have not had one take a single step. The price you paid for ammo is about right in my experience.

The 35 Whelen was never meant to compete with the 45/70. My understanding is it was to give more energy in standard length (30/06 length) bolt action rifles, without recoil beating the snot out of the shooter. That 250 gr load is churning up about 3350 ft lbs of energy, it may feel like a creampuff on your shoulder, but it should smack down anything in the lower 48. It might be a bit light for Alaska's big bears, but I'm a wimp. For grizzly at bad breath range, I want a Ma Deuce.
