Every manufacturer should have a budget single shot entry. Cleaning my cva consists of 30 seconds, zero sound, awesome trigger, heavier barrel , No ugly safety, and priced under 400. Possible improvements cva should offer a wood stock, front drilled tapped for sights, and a trimmer trigger guard.

35 caliber and larger single shot qualifies a gun for primitive deer season and some states like Louisiana I find nothing primitive about that 35 Whelen CVA very popular although mine hated Hornady 2900 FPS, my shoulder took a real pounding trying to sight it in with them. the Remington core lock Federal Fusion half Moa with a little trigger spring adjustment . amazing value. Under $300 but then we need scope and rings

Love your films. Thank you. I am a recent convert to a single barreled shotgun (which sort of brought me to this film as I also like the concept behind single shot rifles). I am in the UK and recently picked up very cheaply, a 1970's single barrelled AYA Cosmos 12 gauge shotgun with a 24 inch barrel and true cylinder tube! It is amazing fun to use and despite the specs, has been busting high clays out to 40 yards with simple 21 gram 7 1/2 shot cartridges. It is a great squirrel gun in the woods too! Fast and light and being so short, nice to carry and walk with. I am doing a little work on the firing pin though this weekend, as it has been hitting primers very hard and some recently have punctured, which is clearly a very bad thing!! Keep up the great work! (I always learn something really interesting from your work).

I love single shots. I've had a few of the cheepy ones that work just great. CVA and NEF are just fine with me. My favorite is still an old 10ga from Stevens, [NEF] such great memories hunting with single shots, special moments in my life I'll never forget. Now at 67yrs I cherish my earlier years in the woods and marsh.

@My Dixie Wrecked🔧 Yup ... it's a full 36in barrel that will put some hurt on you if not shouldered right. I've taken huge geese at Horicon Marsh with that thing. I paid $126 for mine in 1986. My buddies all had one so I found one in the ghetto in Milwaukee. That really got me started on single shots and Savage-Stevens in general. I still use a double most even though I have an Beretta auto with me along with the 10ga.

The 45-70 CVA Scout with the ported barrel and a factory loaded carriage has a mild recoil. The weight of the firearm is all in the barrel, but it balances in a sweet spot. It's a great firearm for any game hunting no matter the conditions. I tell people I could use the barrel of my CVA as a crowbar and it would still shoot groups after.

I have an H&R in 500 S&W mag. as well as the CVA in 44 Rem Mag. They both shoot well for the limit of their respective caliber. I am looking to get a CVA in 243 Win. for a grandchild. The price is great and being a simple mechanism makes them great for introduction to firearms and marksmanship, the followup shot will not be quick so that first one MUST count!

Got my H&R before Remington took H&R. Mine came in 444 Marlin. Then before Remington took over H&R bought 45-70, 270 Win, 308 Win and 20-gauge barrels for it. But last I checked Remington will not make no more barrels for it. But would like to also get 35 Whelan and 1 or 2 more barrels for it.

@@airbornesoldieramerica7125 I would have liked to do the same. - Funny backstory on mine: Was looking to get a "primitive" firearm for the deer season. The 500 was on clearance for $50 less than any other model at the store and it was much more compact than the 45-70 right beside it. I bought it before it could 'get away' but the store did not, nor have they ever, carry ammunition for it.😶 I bought several different types of ammo from mail order and learned how potent the 500 is in the rifle. I would not hesitate to use it on any game animal within 150 yards.

Do know its today's thing. Seems like this is with most new guns and rifles now days. But I am from the old school on this part of it. I certainly would not want to be the guy, out in the sticks somewhere, nothing and no one around, and my scope breaks, with no back up from an iron sight. If a scenario like that happened, just hope I brought enough food with me, till someone picks me up in a plane or whatever. With a broken scope and no back up from iron sights, it will be very unlikely to shoot something to eat. Also, not to mention, might lose like a trophy animal of a lifetime cause of something like this. Loss a trophy buck 1 time, cause using cheap ammo, and rifle misfired.

I bought one when they came out. It sucked and it was as much as an economy bolt gun. I sold it at a loss and bought a Remington 770 and it shoots. Why buy the cheapest action made and pay the same that you pay for a functioning and accurate bolt gun. I have many H&R rifles including the 35 Whelen. This CVA is between 300 and 400 and for a couple hours of wage you can buy a Ruger American. H&R went out of business because the price kept going up and quality bolt gun prices became more affordable. It is a good bet that the CVAs will leave the market as you can see they have already began to limit caliber choices.

The first deer rifle I owned was a NEF single shot in 270 Win and my nephew hunts both the so called primitive weapons season and gun seasons in MS with this CVA 35 Whelan. Don’t think he’s ever lost any 😂. Anyhow, the reason why single shots are fine for deer hunting is that whitetails rarely offer more than one shot, anyhow.

That's a solid comment. I agree - there's that moment...then the first shot - and then it's either flags and chaos or deer hunched up or down. I guess the odd time a barrage works but why. For the wounded re-loading slowly and waiting is best IMHO

I’m a single shot guy, and I could even be content with the plastic stock, but this one lost me on the “takedown”. Easy takedown methods on break-open rifles or shotguns have been available for 150 years, and are a major point of attraction for them. A modern designer couldn’t “invent” one? ( : Late edit... Thanks to the commenter who mentioned the takedown model, I will check it out.

I know you're partial to single shot rifles. They're growing on me, as well. My question to you is about my .303 Martini-Enfield 1897 rifle (maybe a carbine). I watched a number of maintenance tutorials to learn how to disassemble it. The people making the tutorials somehow managed to disassemble and re-assemble their receivers in under three minutes. It took me over an hour, and I still needed my grandson's muscle to snab the falling block to snap back in. One continuimg issue I have which pre-existed my take-down, is that the trigger pull seems to be around 20 pounds. It is painful just to pull the trigger. Is there a fix for this, and my other question is would it be safe to fire military surplus .303 British ammo? Thank you and be well.

Sorry I'm so slow. Military surplus ammo is fine. As for the trigger - try Rangoon Oil and a touch of rottenstone - an old method told to me by a fellow had hunted Africa when it was wild - the trigger will be just as bad for a bit - then the rottenstone will find its way and smooth and lighten. He showed me his 577-450 - the trigger was not light - but slick and easy to manage. All the best to you.

Hi Joseph - I'm assuming you're thinking of deer or something like that. Yes - if you get the right insert you're ready to go! Please practice and have sights or a scope so you can place your shot. All the best.

BPI sold me the .45 accura V2 and the V2 LR both with a 1:28 twist then stopped production of the .45 cal power belt bullets except for the ELRs in 45 cal which require a 1:24 or faster twist. A very crappy way to treat their customers. I contacted Thor bullets they are gonna bail us out but it will be late 2023 or early 2024 before the R&D is completed. I bought the B-14 several years ago and I will never buy from BPI again!

CVA evolve from the most garbage black powder, guns to some really nice firearms at the current day, I am actually amazed that they ever remained in business, much like Keltec, made pure garbage for many years developed a horrid reputation, and I have no idea again how they stayed in business, both of these companies have evidently changed management or some thing, but they have skyrocketed to some vastly wonderful equipment. It's good to see them do such a great job and survive after the horrid reputation of both of them. I would not hesitate to buy either one.
