Well, if anyone's still not pursuaded by the benefits of wet-sanding then they never will. The ridiculous level of improvement in smoothness and reflectivity from the original orange-peel laden bumper is beyond words. Absolutely amazing result. I learn a lot from your videos PoV and this is another one to add to the armoury of knowledge. Cheers!

Too scary to take too much clear coat off if you don't have a lot to begin with, they're expensive and time consuming to reclear, tape up entire car again, etc. Sometimes even 2000 sandpaper takes off a lot. I guess sandpapers are all different by different brands.

I don't understand... what about the clear coat? You're wasting a ton of clear coat with this wet sending. So basically you're reducing the amount of polishing afterwards doing wet sending? Is it accurate or not?

Thing is, people are afraid to do this, as putting sandpaper - even high-grit wet sandpaper - to a car's paint freaks people out. But your video is so detailed, it gives me the confidence to at least try it. Very well done!
@mattiagri6 ай бұрын
Tried it last weekend on my car's tailgate (it was resprayed by the previous owner)... Came out like a mirror and now I have to proceed on the whole car because I love the finishing, that is better than the original paint one. One important thing: if you don't have a VERY aggressive polishing compound, the first pass with the buffing machine will disappoint you. After the initial panic, you can simply try with another pass. And another one. Very time consuming process, but very effective at the end!

I painted my car last weekend and made sure I laid down an extra coat of clear. Makes wetsanding much easier without burning through. I was able to start with 800 grit, then 1200, 1500, 2000, then a machine sand with 3000 grit.

Thanks for this (and your many other videos). This video gave me the confidence to give this a shot on a used car I purchased where the back bumper had been poorly sprayed. Unfortunately the paint job wasn’t up to it - although its massively improved it to a gloss finish across 90% of the bumper the clear coat in some places was wafer thin and willl need to be resprayed, a risk I knew going in as I am no worse off. I at least know my only option is to paint myself or get a shop to do it - going latter purely based on time. Can’t stress enough how much gold is in these videos you do. Have used the techniques you give on my car and motorcycle, saved money and time but importantly enjoyed adding a new skill to the list.

Tip: if you hear these squealy noises (04:32) during sanding, there's a trash particle between the paper and the clear. Stop sanding immediately and rinse the paper and clear or you'll make scratches coarser than the grit of paper.

Use a hybrid silkwool pad at speed setting 1 and u can cut that 1500 grit sanding right up. You dont want heat or pressure when cutting or polishing today's clearcoat. Laquer paint from years ago, you would benefit from heat during polishing. Friction and abrasives are the only factors in polishing now

@cvrpov11 ай бұрын
It's the top coat layer we are working on here not the colour base underneath (presuming the paint has been applied this way). We are sanding and polishing the clear lacquer coat on top of the base layer. Most cars are painted like this nowadays.
