As a Car Mechanic myself and one who did Tire-Jobs and more for a long time I need to make this recommendation: 1. Make your life much easier and get your tires to a Car Workshop so they can press down the Tire from your Rim... if so, you don't have to be that carefull to hit the Tire while sanding, also spraying the Rim afterwards is much easier and the Finish is much better since you can get deaper in the part where Tire and Rim hit each other. Afterwards you just have to fill the Tire with air again and normaly it just should pop up into old position ;) 2. After doing all this... also get to a Car Workshop or a Wheel company, to let your Wheels be balanced again... since you remove and also apply material to your Rims (Removing Aluminium and applying paint) they might be outbalance at least a slight amount. Especially on front wheels where your stearing is, you might find this out sooner or later. Also it's not this nice for the Rest of your car to have these vibrations cause your wheels are off balance. But without these, it's great job ;)

As someone that does this for a living day day out it’s good instructions very knowledgeable. The only goof up is using primer. If you notice most rims have 0 primer it’s not needed and is just a layer that can cause problems. As someone who’s been in auto body for 17 years trust me I know it sounds wrong but feather put your damage and paint right on the metal.
@cvrpov Жыл бұрын
I dont usually use primer. I was trying to be "pc" for the video. Agree with ur points
@65Wri Жыл бұрын
@@cvrpov As an ex painter, you need to read the instructions on the paint you are using if primer is required for the bare metal, manufacturers will use paints created to suit the wheel material to save time and costs. you don't want the paint start falling off the repairs at the 1st chip or scratch. I think most paints are 1 step now but do check
@daos330010 ай бұрын
etch primer is a good idea on ally for decent adhesion. more particularly in cases like this where the substrate is mixed - as you can clearly see the manufacturer used both primer and colour.

I take my wheels to the tire store to get them to break the bead, this greatly eases the entire process. Use red scotch brite pads to scuff up areas that does not need repairs . i use an orbital sander with 120 grit and that is all you need to repair the curb damages. Wet sand with 320 grit on a pad to remove any swirl marks. Use a large trash bag cut a hole and wrap the wheel, it takes a minute instead of using tape to mask around tires.

A handy tip a car body specialist gave me to mask tyres EASILY cheaply and with no mess with load of old masking tape. Using a 1 or 2 inch paintbrush and a cup full of plain WASHING UP liquid - paint the tyre sidewall up to the rim with the soap - allow to dry - then spray the wheel. When the paint dries simply hose off the soap this also makes the tyres look good and leaves them clean and dirt free. TRY IT!👍👍

A few years back I bought a set 20+ year old Subaru STI goldies which had some curb rash. I made a mold from an undamaged part of the lip and used that to profile Loctite PC 7264 aluminum repair epoxy in the damaged areas. The wheels were then refinished in their classic gold color. That was curb rash repair, what is shown here is not curb rash repair, no "repair" has been made, the wheel was just further damaged to blend the gouges.

I would probably use ChrisFix' solution with a rotary tool from Dremel and a 120 grid sand paper-roll to even out the scratches. And you don't even have to be careful about the tyre wall. With the showed solution you've got here, your rim is taking a new form + potentially damage of the tyre as you mentioned. This looks dangerous if you're not somehow qualified or at least got some experience.

What did you do behind the spokes and in the barrel? Mine are cruddy and disgusting so would think they'd need to be sanded down and refinished too? I'm not concerned about cosmetic, more that the fresh new finish on the front won't seal and will eventually peel off around the edges?

Yes these areas will need flatting and leveling out you are correct in what your saying. Sand any damaged or flaking paint and apply a top coat
