Wayne - I’m glad that I got to see your videos. I’m going to move from my Epson 3885 to P900 and nothing is better than to have gained inputs/knowledge on the printer through your channel. I’m a big fan of your 7 part color management series. I haven’t come across such a detailed yet well articulated primer cutting across from the basics to the know all. Greatly indebted to you to have so selflessly shared your experience and knowledge. Thanks again and I will keep revisiting your videos (both past and for the future).

Hi Wayne, nice overview and review. I would like to address a comment you made inquiring what Epson is chasing with the higher SuperFine resolutions. In a nutshell, it isn't intended for use when printing large-size photographs. It is more geared towards (fine line art) illustrations and digitally drawn line art which is intermingled with large swatches (i.e., fills) of solid high-gamut color gradients, presentations which may contain small text and sub/superscript (and tiny footnotes elaborating on all of those asterisks and daggers that appear liberally throughout modern marketing materials), while also embedding vector based shapes and other artificial (cartoonish) solid images full of rich gradients and subtle shades in terms of key and on top of that, real photographs of people wearing richly colored or perhaps finely toned pastel clothing and of course including their faces and various differences in skin tones. These SuperFine resolutions also cater to digital sketches created using tablets and digital pressure sensitive pens, which often also include computer generated highly geometric and high contrast sharp (vs real-world naturally blurry) patterns and textures, etc. Basically, the sort of prints one would generally use a color laser printer to produce, if it wasn't for the absolutely abysmal color gamut of modern CMYK Laser Printers and their complete inability to handle both larger paper sizes (beyond Tabloid [i.e. A3 / 11 in x 17 in] size) and cover stock beyond about 100 lb Cover (~270 GSM). 2400 DPI desktop publishing solutions exist, but prices starting in the tens of thousands, force the groups mentioned above to have to outsource their work to a print shop, with all of the non-immediacy and latency when last minute corrections need to be made, that this off-site process usually entails. That's the sort of clientele and customer base that both Epson and Canon are targeting with these seemingly ludicrous (but only if all you do is photos or photo based artwork) resolutions. Having said that, don't take these preposterous numbers at face value - they are not at all what they claim in terms of final printed "SuperFine" output, mostly due to ink spray and diffusion even on the most ultra super smooth premium glossy coated papers. Anyone that uses both inkjets and lasers for mixed media (and not only photos and photo-derived artwork) as part of their work, knows the pros and cons of each when it comes to the final printed results. The purported 5,760 DPI vertical resolution is no match for the details and sharp small text that even a 300 DPI drum based basic four color Laser Printer can produce, when it comes to printing fine line art details and smaller text sizes on quality smooth bright paper that is appropriate for the task (i.e, catering to the requirements for getting quality prints from these very different printing processes [i.e., laser or inkjet specific paper types]). So, there you have it, the answer with all of the gory details. The target customer base extends way beyond photographers and realistic natural artwork. Photos and artwork which carry with them the natural blurriness, low contrast, and I will go so far as to say limited color palette and gradations of the natural world, which is limited by, for lack of a better word, the physics of lighting limitations and real-world materials (and I didn't even bring up the limited resolution, color gamut, and density range/capability of even the finest digital camera sensors used to capture these photographic images).

appreciate the feedback and information. I guess I see some logic to it, since smaller prints are typically viewed quite closely but I wasn’t aware the market for smaller printers for what you describe is that big . Still baffled that 2880 was left out as an option. I guess they figured 1440 with microweaving was good enough (and I’ll admit it certainly seems to be).

I sure hope this roughly 10th Epson printer I have owned over the last 20+ years doesn't once again let me down. So much of what would be fun gets turned into aggravation with Epson printers. My first few were the Epson 1200 and 1280 along with that pigment ink P2000 (I think that is what it was called). That 1280 wasn't half bad. Then on to the 4000s, 4800s, 4900s and the P5000. The fun is the great quality. The bad, and I mean very bad has been the clogged nozzles and destroyed print heads from having to clean clogged nozzles all the time. All that time sucked away from my life and money from the bank account over 20+ years of being plagued by clogged nozzles. This year my P5000 died and joined the rest of my Epson printers deep in the landfill. So I bought a P900. It's mostly been satisfying to use. I built about a dozen profiles and cranked a number of test prints. I print matte paper only and have yet to print a drop of photo black. I probably won't profile any photo black papers and just rely on downloadable profiles. The ColorThink comparison between the P5000 profiles and the P900 profiles is interesting. I wouldn't say one is better than the other. The differences are surprisingly large. So far I have done nothing but print test images. I can see the difference between the two, but I can't say one is better than the other. However I just jump into production for my wife's side business by trying to print (4x6) cards. I ran into troubles big time. The Inkpress Duo Matte 80 would feed only with the curl up. Forget about feeding it curl down. The two boxes of Somerset Photo Enhanced Velvet cards I had laying around were a one sheet at a time endeavor. I just tried Red River Palo Duro Etching 315 cards and again ran into the one sheet at a time fail. I've bought a few other papers in card format. I hope the rest feed in small stacks. Probably my favorite paper for framing is Canson Infinity Rag Photographique 210 and 310. I sure hope it feeds reliably. Yesterday I ran into some concern while printing eight (5 x 7) images centered on (8.5 x 11). Multiple sheets would pick up and there were misfeeds. I am freaking out over that. I'll know more this week. I am concerned this visibly inferior paper feed system may replace the clogged nozzles for epic aggravation in lost time. So far paper & ink waste has been low. I do credit Epson for that. But my time is valuable and I hate not being able to get 10 consecutive prints to just print from an Epson printer, without clogged nozzles or paper misfeeds. Why can't we have that? The confidence to print ten prints in a row without major baby sitting and-or waste from a printer with archival inks - that is my ask.

I wanted a printer to make smaller prints myself, & this size and quality seems perfect for me. Thanks much for the clear and rational assessment of the Epson p900...I've subscribed. I haven’t unboxed the P900 yet because I am rearranging the office to allow for the new printer and roll paper adapter. I have 3 Epson printers (Stylus Pro 3880, SureColor P800 and SureColor P900). In Photoshop, when I go to File>Print>Print Settings, under Print Quality I see Max Quality and Quality Options. Is there a difference between choosing Max Quality or Quality Options and moving the slider to 5 when the Quality Options window opens up? I notice that if I use Epson Print Layout, however, and go to Max Quality there is no slider, neither is there a provision for Quality Options. Does that mean that Quality Options is not needed and it is already at the maximum quality? I called Epson Support and could not get a straight answer. Thank you very much, Wayne I appreciate all you do to explain quality printing.

Larger display and not having to purge when switching between PB & MB ink are 2 good updates. The new design looks like a box. Reduced ink cartridge size, big negative. Costs more and replace more often. Roll paper add-on, bad design. You won't want to leave the paper roll in as it will indent on the rollers. I had the P800 and it was a damn great printer.

Thank you Wayne for a great discussion on this new Epson P900. Based partly on your video, I will be moving from a Canon Pro100 to the Epson P900 in the near future. My reasons for the move are: Pigment ink, ink cartridge capacity, and 17" printer in a desktop size. I don't think I will be interested in the roll paper adapter, but that could be another plus for the P900.

Hey Wayne, thanks a lot for the informative overview and for getting straight to the point :) I am currently researching for a new printer and I think the P900 might be the right choice for me. However I don't have much space available in depth and was wondering until what grammature of paper I can insert in the top feeder. I kinda don't want to use the front loading option at all because it has to come out in the back around 50cm I think. Thanks a lot
@cwaynefox3 жыл бұрын
all the specification sheet says is "Main Top-loading Up to 17" x 22"; up to 120 sheets plain paper, 30 sheets photo paper, and single sheet loading of thicker fine art paper". I'm not sure how "thick" thicker means. I haven't tried anything other than premium luster yet. I may cut down some old exhibition fiber to smaller sheets the will fit just to see how it handles it.

Can I use any fine art paper or do I have to use Epson papers only? Also, are the inks dye or archival pigment inks? I had a Stylus 1400 printer that was inkjet. I used Krylon UV archival spray in the hopes of extending the lifespan of my prints. Is there any harm in doing that?
@cwaynefox Жыл бұрын
This is a pigment archival printer. I think I discussed how the yellows were improved greatly to make it even more archival. You can use any good quality papers, and in fact, you can set up custom paper types for papers other than Epson papers. I did a couple videos about Epson’s new tool to do that.

I am a new subscriber with a stylus pro 4900. It clogs nozzles all the time. I can't go 2 days without a clogged nozzle. My question, since I'm looking at replacing the 4900 with a P900, is how much or how often does it clog nozzles. Also, I'm finding in customer reviews that the p900 is extremely fidgety about loading and feeding paper. I print A3, A3+ and up to A2 on the 4900 with no problem with paper feeds from the top/rear feed. Any issues with your P900?

@@robertweaver7210 I've decided to wait for the Canon ProGraf 1000 replacement in 2023 (maybe). Won't trust another Epson until they make some technology design changes. The only service I have is 160 miles away and it is really expensive at $150 per hour labor. They told me the Epson 5000 has the same head as the 4900, so it's basically a copy. They also told me that Canon does not support maintenance (USA) on the smaller printers (non commercial) and just replace the printers per warranty. That's fine for me, repair costs are just not worth it.

Love my p800. Have yet to attach the spindle for rolls but oh this model seems way easier for rolls. I’m curious how the violet inks helps colour . I want to sell prints of my digital art . Need to decide how much I want to charge . Do you use a pricing formula for your photo prints ?
@cwaynefox3 жыл бұрын
The violet expands the gamut about 6% or so. Additionally the black overlay also expands the gamut. I have a follow up video coming that shows how the gamut volume increases with each step in the quality settings. To be honest visually I don't think there's enough difference to be detectable in photographic prints, except perhaps in rare circumstances. My 9570 has a considerably larger gamut, because it as orange, green and violet inks to use, yet side by side I really can't see any difference in the output of the p900. As far as my pricing, it's been so long I don't remember how I came up with my prices.

Thank you so much for your informative videos on the Epson Surecolor p900. I just purchased that printer. I already have the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 and the Epson Surecolor p800. I successfully installed the p900 on 2 computers. No problem. However, I noticed in the setup that there were no directions to set the printer to the network. The first Epson representative that I spoke to said that that is done automatically as the driver is being installed. So…how does the software recognize the printer if it has not been already connectef to the network? (To be fair, I will admit that I did connect the printer to the network before installing the software.) The Epson representative told me that I did not have to do that. The next day I spoke to another Epson representative. This representative told me that I did have to connect the printer to the network before installing the software. Frustrating, 2 different statements from 2 Epson representatives. If I am printing from Microsoft Word, the 3880 and the P800 default to Glossy paper unless I change it. An Epson representative told me a few years ago that Glossy is the default. The representative whom I spoke to today denied that there is a default. Do you know what the situation would be with the p900? Thank you very much for whatever information you can give me.
@cwaynefox2 жыл бұрын
Not sure about from windows, but on the p900 when you insert paper, it should ask you what the paper size and type is. The default when you print is to use “printer settings”, meaning the setting you set when you inserted the paper. You can override that in the printer dialog boxes to a different setting if you want. As far as setting up the printer, I suppose it depends on a few things. But the printer must be on the network and discoverable to the computer before it can be used. The driver can be installed whether or not the printer is visible, but best practice is to have the printer on the network, because during the driver installation it will then go ahead and discover the printer and set it up for the operating system to see it. If the printer isn’t on the network, then you will have to do that step from the computer’s system printer settings. I’m not very familiar with Windows but I assume there is a system function that sets up your printers. It could also be that if the printer is on the network windows will try to auto install the printer driver for you. ON the Mac that is a problem for these higher end professional printers when being used by photographers, because it isn’t the full driver that epson installs and the two will conflict. Hope that was somewhat helpful.

I shoot mostly B&W and am venturing into printing for the first time. For the most part I find B&W printing unsatisfactory. The P800 is still being rated as one the best on the market but it is discontinued. Does the 900 fill this space now? Or do you have another recommendation?
@cwaynefox Жыл бұрын
the 900 is the replacement for the 800. Epson claims blacks are improved over the 800. My tests show the dMax is 1 point better ... pretty insignificant but an indicator. I don’t do much black and white and it’s certainly not my specialty, but I’ve heard others say they like it as well or better than the 800. I have printed several B&W images on it and I do like what I see for my work. Hope that’s a little help. ABW mode is supported and can probably yield the highest quality prints.

Wayne, thank you for your video! I noticed that you use a Mac with your printer. Have you had any issues with Epson maintaining printer drivers for your Apple OS upgrades? We upgraded our iMac Pro to Monterey 12.1 and our Canon MG7120 print driver quit functioning. I contacted Canon and they told me to contact Apple for a driver or perhaps Apple no longer required a driver. Canon also offered to sell me a discounted printer. I contacted Apple. They had a good chuckle over the Canon recommendation...they actually told me that it was up to the printer manufacturer to provide the printer drivers. I can use AirPrint, but it does not provide access to the ICC parameters. We can also use our Windows PC. However, that adds another step to our workflow primarily because we prefer to do all our photo editing on the iMac. As for your P900, does Epson do a good job of updating its drivers? Can you use other photo papers and add ICC parameters for those papers to your printer? How readily available is the ink? Did you need to purchase a roller? Have you ever had an Epson photo printer fail because of a plugged nozzle? If we let the printer sit idle for a month, will the nozzle plug? Our 4740 was notorious for nozzles plugging. Thank you. John
@cwaynefox2 жыл бұрын
There are occasionally issues with conflict of Epson drivers and their higher end printers with apple. I’ve had to uninstall and reinstall on a few occasions when Apple updates their OS. . Apple does distribute printer drivers in OS updates, but it’s up to the printer manufacturer to supply those to apple for this to happen, and for some reason the higher end printers are not included so Apple will load a “generic” driver for them. . Sounds like what might be happening is similar to an issue with my p900, where it keeps trying to use the AppleAirPrint driver when I use USB. I had to disable the wifi in (which can be too slow sometimes), and then reinstall the printer driver, and make sure I load the printer during that process with the Epson. As far as plugged nozzles, all printers have them, all printers will use ink to try and keep them clear. If you have an Epson printer you will be aware of them, if you have a Canon or HP, they manage this in the background. Since the head on the Canon and HP are “consumable”, they eventually wear out when they run out of spare nozzles and can’t clear a clog. Hard to say which process is better, Canons use a lot more ink than most are aware of to keep nozzles clear, with Epson it’s sort of unavoidable to be aware of what is going on. However, the p800/900 series Epson printers have far less issues with this, I’ve let my 900 sit for extended periods with no issues. With my p9570 I can set up a custom paper. As far as profiles those aren’t automatically associated with a paper type, but any profile can be used with any paper. With a non Epson paper, the key is to use the epson paper type that was used when the profile was made. When you download the profile from a 3rd party paper, it will tell you what epson paper type to set the printer to when printing their paper, then you just make sure to pick that profile in you printing software and make sure printer manages color settings are turned off.

Thanks for the video. I’m planning to pick up P900 but my Epson dealer is hard selling me the P5000 citing mainly the bigger ink capacity compared to the P900. Will it make a huge difference considering I’m gonna be printing frequently but not everyday for sure.
@cwaynefox3 жыл бұрын
p5000 older tech h, only printer epson hasn't updated to new inks and head design. Could be a replacement is not too far off. Inks in the p900 are the new improved set (but output won't be remarkably different, both produce beautiful prints). p5000 if used occasionally will require more ink to clean, including a force power clean a couple of times a year. Main difference is no ink swapping so if you like to do both PK and MK papers the p900 is a nice choice. But he's right. the p5000 uses 200 ml cartridges so ink will bu substantially lower. Sort of depends on how much you are wanting to print and how much ink you'll go through. You'll want to use up those 200ml cartridges probably at minimum in a year or so.

Hi Wayne. Really nice overview. Two questions about paper feeding. For fine art photo papers have you observed the P900 feeds as good or better than the P800? Many P900 owners have complained that the paper feeder on the P900 is worse than the P800. I am a P800 owner and have never had issues with feeding any type of paper. I have heard people complain that on the P900 you cannot load up fine art papers in multiple in the sheet feeder per the spec the printer says (5 cut sheets of luster, etc.). without getting a miss-feed. Can you confirm or deny that it has feeding issues if you try and load more than one fine art cut sheet at a time when making multiple prints? Thanks!

sorry to take so long to get back to you. I’ve had issues trying to feed multiple sheets of Moab Entrada when printing my cards. Seems like once it gets the first sheet right, it works, but sometimes it won’t pull the front sheet in. haven’t tried any other fine art papers yet other than single sheets.

Thank you for a very well done video. I just ordered a P900. Do you think more ink is used to print in 5760 than1440?
@cwaynefox2 жыл бұрын
sorry I just saw this comment, but to be honest I just found an answer myself. I’ve always assume that higher resolutions used more inks because they put down more dots. But it seems they put down more “smaller” dots. According to Dano Steinhardt, marketing director for Epson America, ink consumption really doesn’t changed with higher resolutions.

Printing a card and the printer said I probably do not have enough ink to print it... but it does NOT tell me WHICH INK to change!! I replaced the lowest level cartridge (Gray) and the print was very dark. Did a nozzle check, clean, and replaced the other ink (Photo Black) that "looked" low. Now it seems OK. But if I get this message again, how do I determine WHICH INK to change? Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Not sure how thick, but the straight through front loading paper path can handle pretty thick media, should handle card stock no problem.

HI Wayne, how is your P900 doing 3 years later?
@cwaynefox8 ай бұрын
I’ve been quite happy with the printer. only had to clean some nozzles a couple of times. Great quality Only issue I keep fighting is the good old Apple AirPrint driver constantly wants to take over. Seems I fight it whenever I get a. new MacBook Pro or when Apple releases its annual MacOS major version. Have to uninstall the driver, then reinstall it, and make sure to let the driver setup the printer rather than using the printer settings dialog.
@timothy7901108 ай бұрын
@@cwaynefox Ouff, that sucks. Ive seen many reviews that basically just say "airplay is bad". DO you have any trouble with the top feeder taking heavier paper, like 300gsm? Mine would not take them at all, i had to "help" the papers in by force. but some people say its pics them up no problem.

Hi :), great video. Maybe a stupid question but if I buy this printer and only use it once a month will the ink suffer from that ?
@cwaynefox2 жыл бұрын
wow, not sure how I missed this comment. Sorry. I think once a month might be a little iffy, but most inkjet printers will have issues with that little of use. Some months it will start up and be great, others you might have to do some nozzle cleaning. Printing that little might be better to find a local company that can make your prints.

Hello everyone, I use sc p800 to print gobo images on transparent epson foil. I noticed that the yellow color fades very quickly. While the other colors last up to 10 times longer. For example, on a 60 mm diameter image with a load of 2000 lumens, yellow fades in 10 up to 15 days at about 50% in my estimation. While the other colors last for 12 months with a loss of 10% which is a very big difference. I read somewhere that Epson introduced a new yellow formula for the p700 and p900 printers but no one knows anything about it it speaks regardless of the fact that in my opinion it is a very important color for photography.
@vojinjakovljevic85512 жыл бұрын
Even when I used inktech refills the situation was similar. The original Epson color faded more often and had a slightly better black. Still, the yellow faded much faster than the other colors.
@cwaynefox2 жыл бұрын
The yellow inkjet fading was dramatically improved in the newest epson printers such as the p900. That’s one of the main features Epson was after. For archival work, the colors will show little fading for decades. Stressful situations and media as you describe will always be problematic. And yellow still might be a problem in the situation you describe, since yellow just doesn’t have much density to it, so it might appear to fade faster.

Wayne--Thanks for a great review! Can you tell me if this printer has the capability of manually loading thin, delicate media? I print on special Japanese papers, i.e. expensive, and sometimes mounted tissue paper. I hate the rear auto loading because it takes my expensive paper and rips it into shreds.
@cwaynefox3 жыл бұрын
I really can't answer that question, sorry. the media loading looks very similar to the p800, although I do think it might be easier to use the front loading feeder since you have a nice guide on both sides of the paper. Not sure if that's an option. I don't have any thin media like that test.

Hi, I am trying to figure out why my whites have an overlay with light gray color? The colors look dull because of it. Printer is new, tested, ink is full, works perfect, pg is in CMYK... but if I have a white background - it will have a gray overlay. Its very noticeable if it's on a half of the pg. Do you know how to adjust it? I select correct finishes and paper... printed in SO many different programs but cant get crispy white!??? So frustrating, can you please help? TX

@@alleonidovich2571 The gray overlay sounds odd, I’ve heard of this happening on a Mac when you use versions 4 paper profiles instead of version 2, but not familiar with it happening on windows. Hard to diagnose without seeing screenshots of all pertinent dialog boxes. Exactly what brand and type of paper? One thought would be to convert it to RGB before sending it to the printer, the printer drivers are designed around RGB files, should handle cmyk, but could be the conversion in the driver is having issues. I assume you aren’t using printer manages color but are using color management and have the right paper profile loaded.

@@cwaynefox Thank you! We purchased i1 Studio and calibrated both monitor and printer matched the right paper and for some reason colors still don't match. I have a feeling either something is wrong with printer or blue cartridge is bad. When I printed color samples to calibrate printer and noticed that blue is coming out purple. When we purchased the printer it already came with cartridges 20% filled. I have brand new cartridges but not sure if I should replace it. Want to save it for the printer that's going to work! Probably replacing for another printer would be a better option. The box it came in was a bit rough and had a hole in it but printer looked fine. Who knows maybe it got damaged during shipping. @cwaynefox3 жыл бұрын
the p700 roll unit is incorporated and so is included. the p900 roll unit (which is far better than the p700 design) does not come with the unit, I think it costs $250 or so. It uses the full size rolls like the large format roll printers, and doesn't require a spindle.

It would be nice to print a little larger than 17 inches wide at 5760 x 1440 dpi. Is there a printer that can print 20 22 or 24 inches wide at 5760 x 1440 dpi?
@cwaynefox Жыл бұрын
any reason you need that high of resolution that wide? I never use that resolution for photographic output even on the p900, and output that large is rarely viewed close enough that any detail would be visually different. I suppose there are some applications that might need it, things designed to be studied very closely. (Maybe some type of super resolution maps? ). Anyway, I know of no large format printers with resolutions above around 2400-2880.

Do you think the lack of a red ink leaves the p900 unable to do justice to reds, if graduations of reds, in rare situations? On canvas, strong saturation ? I’m curious given the canon 1000 has a proprietary dedicated red
@cwaynefox3 жыл бұрын
No. Having "red" ink doesn't make the reds better. Look at the strawberries on the tests I'm holding up. These printers make colors by dithering small dots of colors, and choosing red as an extra is just something that Canon decided to do. Epson uses violet, as well as 2 magentas, and the results are fantastic. The Canon also has beautiful output, but the colors of most photographs will appear identical, because both brands have large and solid gamuts. I have printed this same target on canon printers, and any differences are incredibly small (to the point of being imperceptible). When you get into spot (artificial) colors, then the red might have a slight advantage in some extremely saturated red colors, but the violet of the epson makes it stronger for most Pantone spot colors.

@@cwaynefox thanks for this response. I was curious because I tend really like pictures of saturated reds, particularly flowers. I put in an order for the p900 yesterday !
