Looking at this Wi-Fi network controller power outlet in depth. This video examines the protocols used, and how you can also use it without the official app.
I'd like to thank these guys for providing some incredibly useful info.

I love that "me and cloud don't mix well"... Nice job walking through how to track what a device is doing on your network.

Great video! 2 questions: a) can you show how we can block devices from calling "home" on the network? b) There is an open source project called Home Assistant that can run on Raspberry Pi, lots of features and integrations, can work with MQTT, Tasmota, ESPHome, etc and runs locally, can you talk about that or why you don't use it?

Use pfsense and block it at the firewall.

Your heading down the home automation rabbit hole now. Im also on that path. Majority of these devices all use the esp8266 chipset, and Tasmota is a open source custom firmware that can be flashed to them giving full custom functionality and deleting the cloud. Ive been playing with some of the DETA bunnings switches and sockets on a separate wifi network with firewalled no internet access and running into home assistant open source home automation running on a raspberry pi.

No I'm not. I'm a hands on kind of guy. Still, I might look at Tasmota since its name keeps coming up and I like to know how things work.

Flash it over the air to tasmota. Much more control and security than the unknown stock firmware....

Great video! For all IoT to stay local in my home I flash Tasmota or ESPhome firmware to the esp8266 or esp32 based devices (like this one probably is). With Home Assistant running in a docker setup, this gives a great open source solution with dashboards and graphs that also integrates with Tesla Powerwall... Just saying ;-) Thank you for making these videos.

I'm not into home automation, just felt like playing around with this thing. I might look into this Tasmota though since everyone is mentioning it though.

Great video! That reminds me one of my first tasks as a system/network admin 15 years ago - to port a windows app to a linux OS and do some automation. App was sending off/on commands to an IP network relay board (over unknown protocol on top of UDP) to reload a buggy AP installed 100 miles away. During that time Wireshark was called Ethereal however netcat was the same.I used the same network approach then.Few months later IP relay board’s vendor released a new firmware suppoting SNMPv1 :)
@TallPaulTech
@TallPaulTech 4 жыл бұрын
Mate, that's the sort of shit I like! Yes, it was Ethereal back in the day. Now tell me why I use Wireshark for wireless stuff, and not use wirelessshark ;) These sorts of things put the fun back into IT.

A+ demonstration!!! Used your captured raw 106-byte hex-string (@ time-mark ~5minute) in a python3 program to control HS100, HS200 and KP303. Method: Used a 102-byte raw-hex base_string (too long to show) and two 4-byte raw-hex on/off_strings {on/off example: ("9fe29fe2")/("9ee39ee3")}; Combined strings, msg=base_string + on or off _string; Convert msg to kmsg=bytes.fromhex(msg); send (kmsg). Hope this methodology can help someone as much as your demo helped me. Thanks mate.

Yeah but is the app any good and is it secure from a wifi hotspot point of view. I presume it’s hotspot goes off once registered. Presumably the PI watt meter you used an existing script? Would you buy more and if so what purpose? You doing an IP based block or MAC? If latter presumably your just giving it a dhcp reservation via Mac and blocking that IP.

I actually do enjoy so much to watch it. I need your help about something, I dig on the web and couldn't find about. I will build camera system to my appartment everything is okay but the dvr uses old firmware whis is not upgradable. Good thing is I'm root on that dvr, I can change files and stuf you know.. I don't know what to do after that. Backup files to my drive, delete them all, find new firmware and copy paste files? I have no idea. Please tell me if you can help me and I will send you detailed email for it.

Pretty interesting video, I have a couple of these from when I first stated my home automation journey (Home Assistant - HA) I still have them in place with the cloud as they give me a secondary way to reboot my HA server if it hangs, rest of the sockets in the house use tasmota custom firmware

Nice video content and on future recommendation could you make the screen resolution font larger for the popup? I can see the wireshark screens fine but the popup screen was low. Definitely security risk for the product but reflashing should do the trick. I wonder if the phone app us sending other data to the cloud on your phone. A wireshark analysis for what the phone app is doing would be very interesting for the next episode.
