My thoughts after owning my wife's daily driver 2023 Mazda CX-50 (non-turbo) for one year and 13,000 miles. *UPDATE on roof rack crossbar wind noise* Today (3/25/2024) I received a package from Mazda containing an "Aero-Infill Kit" (Mazda part # VA52-V3-84E) to address the crossbar wind noise as part of Owner Notification Program (ONP) 09. The kit appears to be identical to the Rhino Vortex Generating Strips I mentioned in the video (and linked below - the Mazda kit includes 6 strips), which I've already installed, correcting the wind noise problem for me. Kudos to Mazda for addressing and resolving this issue.
Build and pricing details:
2023 Mazda CX-50 preferred plus trim
Options: convenience package, cargo mat, wind chill pearl paint color, splash guards, cargo package
Pricing (base / with options / with delivery, processing, handling): $32,690 / $34,495 / $35,770
Rhino Vortex Generating Strips for crossbars (6 required total): www.etrailer.com/Accessories-...
or from Amazon: amzn.to/413oJHH
Exped MegaMat 10 Duo camping mattress: amzn.to/3N5A3gJ

I still think this exact non-turbo spec is a hidden gem among crossover SUVs because of the reliability engineered into it from the simple engine design to the non-CVT transmission. Long term ownership maintenance should be easy for DIY'ers.

Yup and the non-turbo engine is pretty reliable longterm and is actually more fuel efficient. you can also get more power from it by going with 91-93 Shell V-power gasoline (Personally tested) which i've found to be the best and quiets down the engine even more + smooth power deliverly.
@blakespower

@@coreyfreeman6226 no you should never use high octane if the engine doesn't require it, it builds up carbon in the short term it may run better but the fuel won't be burned completely and build up carbon and yes this is another reason turbo engines need to be maintained more often

Great review! I just traded my 2017 RAV4 for a 2024 CX-50 Premium just yesterday. I love how simple the interior design is. My wife is super unimpressed by it. She does love that it has actual buttons and knobs because her Hyundai is 100% touch screen for everything. Infotainment system I’ve become accustomed to and really like it.

I have the base Turbo version and I have no issues with drivability - it's actually pretty peppy & responsive, and I'm getting 26mpg on the highway. I'd echo your complaints about the screen - I've had my CX-50 for a year and I still struggle with it. You're correct about the low-profile/large rim wheels... they are mostly good, but certain roads will drive you out of your mind. Concrete roads with robust expansion joints come to mind. Finally... the seatbelt alarm!!! I almost hate it enough to dump the car!!

Nice real world review. I have a 2019 CX5 GTR which I like but find too small. I like the size of this suv and I've gotten use to the dial thing and actually like it. I've crossed shop across the board, Honda Pilot and Passport, Highlander, Subaru Ascent, Nissan Pathfinder...etc. And to be honest, I would really like a CX 9 Grand Touring which has everything my CX 5 has, only a little bigger. And a very classy looking SUV. But I can't find one in white with bench seating, so I guess this would be my second choice. Thanks for letting us know how a "regular" guy and not some KZbin reviewer feels about a car...real world review!

I'm with you also. I have a Mazda3, and touch screens in other vehicles seem a little more difficult to operate to me. I love that the selector and volume knob are directly underneath my right hand and I don't ever miss and hit the wrong button. And, of course, no constant wiping greasy fingerprints off the touchscreen. But I don't use Android Auto, and it may be easier with a touchscreen since that's what it was designed for. I think Mazda has fixed this recently and made the touchscreen available when using Car play and Android Auto.

But, you have to look at the screen multiple times to get the right highlight in Apple Car Play. I have a 2020 CX-5, and though it’s now 8 years in CX-5s for me, I still find this a nuisance in ACP mode. No problem in the Mazda infotainment system, but with an iPhone, that’s go-to.

Good review. We're looking to upgrade our current vehicle (2017 Escape titanium), and the CX5/CX50 are among the contenders (along with the Rav4 & CRV). Some of features I would really like to have are 1) adaptive cruise control (already mentioned in the video), blind spot monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Auto on off Head Lights (that just turn off when you turn the car off), Rain sensing wipers (not really strong on that one), Power liftgate (motion activated with foot is a bonus when hands are full), Heated seats & mirrors (bonus for ventilated seats), and a sun visor that not only rotates to the driver side (all cars have that) but that can slide out to cover more of the driver's window depending on the position of the sun (not just a little plastic bit that can slide out). Of course things like dependability, driving dynamics and such matter as well. Some features I don't want are: Cylinder deactivation, engine start/stop at stoplights, and transmitting drivers data to manufacturer/insurance. How does the CX-50 measure up there?

You pretty much pegged the shortfallings of this ride, as well as the strong points and reasons for choosing this model. I have owned mine for 9 months and I still love it despite the short fallings. It is a naturally aspirated Select package. You save a lot of coins and I insisted on no sunroof and no powers lift gate and no turbo to care for or rob engine life. I appreciate the dial and controls of the infotainment myself though. I don’t care to have a touch screen computer staring at me everywhere I go. I get in this thing to get away from such things and I feel it adds a bit of upscale vibe. I keep looking at other crossover reviews and I would still go buy this over the others tmw !

Getting ready to replace my 2014 Mazda 6 with the 2024 CX-50 turbo version. Don't really want a turbo, but the base model has cylinder deactivation which is a no-go for me. My one and only nit about the 6 is the caller ID screen. All incoming calls are only displayed as a tiny number, even if the caller is in your contact list. Real PITA for me. My wife drives a Murano, and that caller ID is displayed with name, number, and very easy to read at a quick glance. I hope Mazda has fixed this issue.

Just picked up the 2024 CX-50 Premium. Very Pleased. It is solid and prefer the lower ride feeling. It has upgraded shocks and lighter steering compared to the 23' Model. Within 2 days, I found a coding bug. You can use the favorite button to add a radio station to favorites. Discovered you can add the same station multiple times. Ideally, should be limited to once. Also, instead of a delete a favorite screen action, it would be easier to hold down the favorite button to unfavorite a station, essentially a double click.

I have the vehicle and the engine tuning is one of the best features of the car. It’s very confidence inspiring and doesn’t have any lurch of any kind. I only use regular on it and the dial control is MUCH better than using the touch screen as you can keep your eyes on the road the entire time. The seats are comfortable and have no issues. And finally people that say the steering is too heavily really need to work out more, as the steering wheel isn’t minivan levels of ease but you feel EXACTLY where the wheels are pointed at all times and I love that control over the car.

The acceleration issues you’re experiencing are due to the skyactiv cylinder deactivation. I had a long term rental cx5 and it was horrible just like you described. First thing, the screen can be set for touch screen in the new models so it will satisfy all the Android auto and Carplay folks out there. I have over 900 mp3 to scroll through so it's safer to use the control knob instead of swiping the screen. My favorite feature, in fact. Not using Android Auto, so it's a non-issue. Also, the turbo solves your other torque hungry problems. I also found my new Pirelli Scorpion AS plus 3 tires are so supple , I'd recommend it for everyone 😀.

While the screen is technically a touchscreen, the physical position of it makes touchscreen use (especially while driving) unfeasible. All Mazda needs to do is move the screen closer to the driver so that it is actually usable and that would solve the problem. This and having no lane keep/steering assist feature will keep me away from the CX5/50 as much as I love the styling and other features.

For the faux touchscreen, I don't think it's that big of a deal but maybe that's because I've never had a car with touchscreen before so this isn't a dealbreaker for me. Also you can unlock the touchscreen while the car is in drive so in a pinch you can lean forward and use the touchscreen anyway. But i honestly prefer the knob/buttons because i can't feel a touchscreen without looking the way i can feel a knob or button. Agree the seatbelt alert is annoying. Even if I'm trying to realign my car in a parking spot the alert will come on and if the car is moving it literally never shuts off. Ugh.

I want the Naturally aspirated one and have a SUPERCHARGER put on it-- much better than turbo- and won't wear the car out like turbo will.. even power through the full pedal range too.. and you're "IN THE BAND" all the time-- any speed- you get what you need as you push the pedal- with NO lurch or lag!!!

A good average one for a daily driver is around $5000 INSTALLED- but you need to find a good shop to do a dynotune and set the computer up for you.. that's a good bit more.. @@bradlebosse7998 It costs about the same as a TURBO adds to the price of a car- BUT- the advantages are- 1- if it breaks while youre driving- you keep driving with nothing happeneing but a loss of that boost. (Turbo going bad RUINS the engine if you don't stop immediately). 2- It's cheaper to operate- as it doesn't cause the oil to turn to varnish and works off belt drive- 3-gives power INSTANTLY never any lag and it is in direct relation to pedal travel.. (better control)..and there are others.. OH- the MPG will be equal to before or a tad better- because you'll have power without pressing the pedal as much!!

My 2014 Mazda 6 has the same very annoying problem as your CX-50 when almost coming to a complete stop and hitting the gas the trans will take forever to shift--sometimes it feels like it's in neutral. Also, a few times when I hit the brakes to avoid deer, the trans will drop to a very low gear and the motor will rev really high and continue to do this even after trying to resume speed. Apart from that, after 230K miles I've had no major problems and looking at the CX-50 or CX-5. Yes, My 6 has a VERY stiff ride. In Maine, that's not so good.

The auto transmission is tuned for better fuel economy. It shifts gears at low engine rpm. When speeding up, even floored gas paddle, you still feel the car hesitates a second, that’s engine reving up. Try the “M”(manual) mode when you want to speed up quickly. You control when to shift gear, and do it at higher rpm. Engine outputs more torque at higher rpm. When speed down, do downshift before applying brake except for in emergency. You control the gear that engine running at higher rpm, you could merge quickly into a faster moving lane.

I have been asking everyone on the Mazda Facebook on why the Meridian Turbo Edition only has 18" rims like most of the non-turbo variants. It's touted as this more off-road savvy model. But after seeing this video (time stamp 2:55) on your thoughts between non-turbo 18" rim smoother ride vs. turbo 20" firmer ride, this is all starting to make ALOT more sense now. Perhaps this is why Mazda decided to give the Meridian Edition 18" rims and not 20".

Absolutely! Smaller wheel diameter means you get more tire sidewall, which is better for off pavement driving because the tire will absorb more impact, plus your wheels are less likely to get damaged by rocks or other debris/obstacles

Try scraping frost and show off the windshield. The poorly designed hood actually prevents the wipers from being fully lifted you get a few inches at best and that is if you want to chip the paint on the soda can thick hood, leaving you with a nice pocket that gets packed with said snow. All in all, it is about as bad as a 79 pinto in it's design. This car looks pretty nice but I have buyers remorse, having replaced a CX-5. Living in MN, the windshield is enough to make me consider dumping it.

I have no issue withy touchscreens when relaxing at home but after having increasingly bigger and more complex in-car touchscreens are flat out dangerous and in other realities they would be banned. With many implementations on everything but the smoothest road conditions, incorrect options are often selected frustrating the driver who then has to go back and repeat - taking eyes off the road go course. Add in the options deep in submenus and distracting animations and it's an accident waiting to happen. In the UK you can get fined/banned for using a mobile phone when driving, yet it's fine for them to navigate less familiar complex functions at an arms length and the systems are getting more complex by the day. The Mazda system I get can be a bit tricky at first as you learn how to jump around but there is a huge difference to me which is on a touchscreen a huge amount of focus on the road is removed as I have to 'read' the screen to work out what is happening whilst on a Mazda making a wrong menu turn and having to back up and go again is more something I am observing out of the corner of my eye (helped by the level positioning of the screen and not having to guide a tired finger towards a constantly moving target through development of muscle memory on the rotary controller. So if I'm taking 75%-80% of focus for a complex touchscreen, I'm - certainly when familiar with it. - probably only taking 25%-20% in a Mazda. Incidentally I have owned three modern Mazda's. a 2019 Mazda6 with the older screen/infotainment system and my current car a 2020 Mazda3 Saloon which I believe has the same system as in the car here. I know it's subjective to a degree, but I am convinced the fingertip rotary coupled with the latest infotainment system is significantly safer than almost all modern touchscreen implementations. And check if your model includes the 'traffic jam assist' function - this does attempt to centre in lane but only up to a speed around 40mph. My 3 has it so I'd be surprised if the CX-50 doesn't. Oh and if we are talking about Mazda nailing the adaptive cruise control, there has got to be a mention for the stunningly effective adaptive LED lights which black out individual LEDs allowing full beam to remain on most of the time. Oh and the cross traffic alerts and......
