Mazda offers two compelling options in the compact crossover market: the CX-50 and the CX-5. Both models are renowned for their sleek styling, superior handling, and upscale flair. The CX-5, a long-standing popular choice, stands out for its distinctiveness in the segment. The CX-50, a newer addition, competes in the same category and replicates many of the admired features of the CX-5. Given that Mazda markets both models concurrently, the key focus is on comparing them to understand their differences and determining which model might be the more recommended choice for consumers.

You forgot two important differences. The CX-5 is 100% made in Japan while the 50 is produced in Alabama. Also, the CX-5 utilizes an independent rear suspension while the 50 goes “cheap” with a torsion beam.

As an owner of a 2023 CX-5 Signature, I performed the same comparison against the CX-50 a year ago. For me, the biggest advantage of the CX-5 was significantly more headroom in the FRONT seats. I am 6 feet tall so that made a big difference in the roominess of the cabin. Second, I do wish the CX-5 had a panoramic sunroof, but that was not a dealbreaker for me. Lastly, I find that the rotary knob to control the infotainment screen is very intuitive and easy to use while driving….it’s not a big deal. Note there are one-touch buttons adjacent to the rotary knob for navigation and entertainment.
@spinedoc893
@spinedoc893 2 ай бұрын
Its deceiving when you sit in them. The CX-50 seems dramatically wider and the CX-5 seems like it has way more head room but the the CX-50 is only about .5" wider and the CX-5 only has .6" more front headroom

The infotainment system is easy and basic in a good way. I actually use the knob mostly and love it. There is a favorite button, I have a lot in there , easy peasy. Plus the hand controls on the left side steering wheel. It took a couple weeks of me playing around and getting used to everything. It's second nature now.

I just made that decision and went with a 2024 CX-5 Turbo Premium. I compared the CX-5 and CX-50 side by side in the showroom, sat in both. I just found the CX-5 more luxurious inside which was what I preferred. I liked the way the doors closed better on the CX-5. The CX-5 has painted wheel trims available which looks more upscale in my opinion vs plastic cladding. I actually prefer the regular size sunroof on the CX-5 over the panoramic. I like the extra headroom in the CX-5. We don't have passengers in the back seat very often so the extra legroom in the backseat that the CX-50 has over the CX-5 isn't a deciding factor. I would rather have the extra headroom in the front if I have to choose. The leather strip on the middle of the seats of the CX-50 bothered me and I don't know if it's something I could have gotten used to. I find the CX-5 seats more comfortable overall. Top it off that the CX-5 is a little less expensive and made in Japan although I wouldn't have a problem buying a car from the Mazda Toyota plant in Alabama. Our other car is a made in USA 2017 Toyota Camry probably from the same plant and it's been great.I never test drove the CX-50 so I can't speak to the driving experience between the two. I do love driving my CX-5 Turbo.

Mazda employs massive cost cutting in several areas on the CX-50 yet charges more...the hard plastics, the torsion beam rear suspension, the lower quality front seats, etc. And as noted, the CX-5 is made in Japan vs. Alabama. I would pick the CX-5 any day of the week. EDIT: not to mention the matte black cladding even on the top CX-50 trim, no thanks.

Being a newer model vehicle for Mazda, the CX-50 has had more issues/problems that still need tweaking, & the fairly new Huntsville, AL plant still needs some tweaking also, as the CX-50 & Corolla Cross vehicles they churn out tend to have more build defects, so examine the vehicles you buy very carefully. The venerable CX-5 is close to its last production year before a new gen is released, so it tends to have fewer problems/issues currently (& it is also built in Japan still).

When my family rented a vehicle while on vacation, we got a Mazda3 sedan. My sister's boyfriend (who was the designated driver) hated it, because the infotainment screen wasn't touch enabled. I'm 10 years older than him, so I was used to using a separate dial for navigating screens (yay for early smartphones like the Nokia 3390 with the game "Snake"). Personally, if I had to get a small SUV, a Mazda CX-5 or CX-50 would be on my list, since I loved my Mazda3 hatchback.

The US audience has spoken. In 2023 Mazda sold almost 45,000 units of the CX-5. The CX-50? Just 15,867. So an important difference is one sells nearly twice as well as the other in the USA. And it is the older CX-5 that outsells the CX-50 and is why they have not discontinued the older model because the newer one has not sold as well.

Not to crazy about that infotainment controls still though, its just too had to get used to with the GPS and all. No where near as user friendly as the Challenger or Jeeps that I've had.

I will be looking at getting a used CX5 Turbo S or Signature depending on rates, since the CX5 has been out longer used ones with the 2.5T are easier to find and cheaper. Also the CX5 shares its platform with the Mazda 6 I currently own which has outstanding ride and handling balance (especially with really good shoes) and I still prefer the design and interior of the CX5. Both are good though.

We recently bought the Mazda CX-5, and while we love the comfort and handling I am perplexed at the rear seat access for USBs and seat heaters in the center back seat console. You have to have the center console down - which means that if I’m running my skis and board through the center or have a 3rd passenger in the back seat, there is no access to these features. Shortsighted design in my mind when it comes to occupant ops, not sure why these weren’t located on the front center console at (I assume) the rear vents as shown in this video in the CX-50. The loud persistent beeping for seat belts is also annoying, as is integration of Pandora in the infotainment menu.

You guys, I wanted so badly to love the CX-5! I almost bought it sight unseen, but the driver’s seat was so cramped and uncomfortable! At 5’1”, bottom seat cushion is too long for my legs. The power seats don’t tilt forward to alleviate this. The driver’s leg space is also very narrow, adding to the cramped feeling. I just couldn’t get comfortable. I even test drove it 3 different times trying to convince myself I could get used to it😢. The CX-50 feels so much more comfortable and spacious even with the bottom “cushion” being hard and flat.

For Mexico te price tags between CX-5 fully loaded and CX-50 only version make a considerable difference... About $6K. I see that's an artificial differentiation as if they belong to totally different segments.

I personally find it weird that they're still selling the two alongside each other when they replaced the CX-3 with the CX-30 and the CX-9 with the CX-90, I just kind of feel like the CX-50 should just be the fifth generation small crossover from Mazda, with that first being the Tribute, then CX-7, CX-5 1st gen, CX-5 2nd gen, and now the CX-50

Unfortunately the review makes it sound like you have to use 93 octane to get any better performance or it is required for the turbo. It would have only taken a breath or two to explain that the turbo gets 2237hp/310fp on 87oct and increases to 258/320fp on 93oct.

I’m kind of in a crunch right now In need of a new vehicle bc my 2013 Nissan Altima conked out on me 1 too many times over the last few months. I’ve replaced valve cover gasket, spark plugs, coils, crankshaft, multiple batteries, more recently the alternator and one week after the alternator it’s the transmission. Tired of throwing more money into it. Mazda came onto my radar but idk what the best bang for my buck is that fits in their line up with my needs. I have a 715 credit score through Experian. I don’t wanna pay more than $450 a month but I want an SUV since I have 2 toddlers. I don’t care about all the bells and whistles. Anyone know of any good models that can fit my circumstance? I don’t mind putting maybe 2-3K down but that’s the most I’ll go.

I'd take a good look at some of the certified pre-owned CX-5s. They're actually a great value family car, especially while the little ones are young. The features haven't really changed at all since 2021, and you can get them with low mileage and still save about 8-10k off a new one. Just try to keep it at or below 60 months financing. Also make sure to shop around for which Mazda dealer is offering the best rates. Some dealers around here are charging 5.9% while others start at 8.9% or more. Obviously, there are a lot of good competitors in the segment, but there's probably a good reason you ended up on this video.

I'm an Accountant - I understand that used Nissan gave out and smashed you... But don't give up on used - Please try next a used Toyota-Lexus or Honda-Acura - maybe Mazda (Japanese) - Don't touch used German or American - Cars are a cash proposition. Better to own and suffer depreciation and repairs than rent just to throw your money down the drain. Just buy quality. Nissan is not long term quality. Just my opinion.

@@lornestein7248 very very much appreciated! This is what KZbin comments section should be about. People helping people. I'm seriously in the market to legitimately buy and there are just too many videos and dealerships to sift through on determining what's the right choice for me. A friend of mine has been trying to have me consider a few Volkswagen SUVs but I think I might stay away based on what you said. Some of the Rogue prices are significantly low but Nissan has given me such a bad experience with so many of the issues that I just can't see myself going back. Appreciate the advice. Definitely golden. Especially the part about buying. At first I was considering a lease but wasn't sure if that was a good idea either. Sounds like it's not.

Cx50 is not bigger inside, the appearance is deceiving but it’s a beautiful SUV , I purchased a CX9 instead, more space inside.. I test drove both vehicles, I was going for the CX50 but changed my mind to CX9 … you can’t go wrong with either, I prefer vehicles with no sunroof, I never used them but after a while they start leaking.. The reason I would recommend a Mazda is because of the transmission, they don’t use CVT .. I own 3 Nissan vehicles and all 3 I ended up replacing the transmission, I will never buy a Nissan again

I just cant get pass the cladding ( why so much cladding?), hard seats, rear torsion beam suspension and station wagon look of the CX 50. The CX 5 for me, but it too isn't perfect. I would prefer a car about 3 inches longer for more rear seat room and little more width (only would need an inch or two). However, I have a cx 5 signature and it is very good. I think they were heading in the right direction with the cx 50 but fell short based on the issues mentioned above. Infotainment is not a deal breaker for me on either of these cars.

Well yes maybe, but that puts the 50 in a box on it's own. I think they were originally thinking that the cx 50 was going to be like the cx 30 and the cx 90 which was designed to replace their older siblings. However, now because they made a vehicle for a very specific task they can't get their sales number close to the CX 5 so they can't have the CX 50 replace the cx 5 without a major drop in sales. What I think they should have done is make the CX 50 a better version of the CX 5 ( slightly bigger, same rear suspension and not like a station wagon) , phase out the cx 5 and then have a offroad version of the CX 50 similar to what Toyota did for the Rav 4. Just my thoughts.

A CX-50 Gas/ Eloectric Hybrid (Rav 4. CRV . Sportage) would be a Home Run for Mazda. Mazda's are known as The poor Man's BMW for handling and ride. A BMW on a Beer Budget. Both of these compact SUVs are on My Consideration List to possibly replace my 2022 Acura MDX Advance leased until 8/2024. I really don't need a 3 Row SUV - never used the 3rd Row (I often wonder how many people actually do?), however I truly enjoy the MDX - for it's comfort, ride & handling, its SH-AWD system, the interior , its stereo system however, the MPGs have been disappointing, about 12-15% less than EPA numbers. Acura like Mazda are being foolish IMHO by jnot having a Gas/Hybrid models. Acura discontinued their MDX Sport Hybrid 2018-2020 . That was a No-Brainer : using a 3.0L engine , dleivered more HP and More Torque with Better MPGs! Definitely worth the extra $1500-1800 in those years.

I wouldn’t buy either. The biggest issue I have with both the models is lack of Hybrid or a PHEV. It is a serious omission in this fiercely competitive segment that Mazda doesn’t have one. They have said they will in 2025, let’s see, by then I would be in the market for a third car.

i had a 2021 cx-9 and i wanted to stay with that car alfter lease but the buyout was crazy. the cx-90 was too big of a car for just me so i felt like i had to downgrade to a cx-5 or cx-50. i ultimately ended up with a 2021 cx-5 turbo with forward facing camera sensors and wrap around camera. with all the same features as my cx9. ive yet to get to liking the car but i must say its very nice on cornering and it gets up real quick especially in sport mode. The leg room is ridiculous im 6f1 and the seat literally cant be adjusted or go all the way back as a cx9 or cx-90. Its good on gas and easily swtich lanes without considereing the dimensions of the vehicle. Just wished the design especially in the frontal gril was more aggressive more masculine like that of the cx9 or cx-90. Good car but im still not sold maybe i should have gotten the cx-50
