Normalizing the sound is basically adding a limiter, so yeah you’re right doing that changes the frequency content. And just raising the fader like you do instead keeps the freqs the same

No, normalizing the sound and limiting is not the same, limiting is reducing peaks to increase volume of lower sounds while normalizing brings up the volume of the whole sample with the peaks to 0db
