The image of Subotai watching into the distance as the riders come is breathtaking. As he moves laterally the camera shifts along with him, keeping the viewer locked into his view. In this scene, Conan solves the riddle of steel. It's not steel (i.e. the weapon) that makes you strong, as Conan's father believed, nor flesh (i.e. bodies), as Thulsa Doom claimed. It's willpower. Two warriors defeat many, because of their indomitable will.
@True_Christian Жыл бұрын
You didn't explain how Rexor besting Conan, and Conan *needing* to rely on divine intervention via Valeria to save him from sure death, fits into your theory there. If not for that, Conan would be dead, 100% regardless of his "willpower."

@@True_Christian Valeria's appearance fits nicely into the theme of "will". She swears she'll come back from the dead one last time should Conan be in danger, and she does. Copied from Eric Ward. From atop his mountain, the figure watched. To human eyes he looked to be carved from the living stone of the great throne he sat on. His eyes watched the world below, the battle was about to begin. It was small, compared to others he had witnessed throughout the ages, but he watched all the same. He would watch two warriors die a heroes death… Then he heard the prayer. It came from one of His folk, one of the warriors on that little battlefield. From a man of the brooding hills and dark woods of Cimmeria. He listened to the hillman’s words, his waxing of how none shall remember why they fought this day, that Valor pleased him, and his one request: revenge. The barbarian finished, and the divine one smiled upon his most ignorant believer, and yet his most devoted disciple. “If it is revenge you crave Cimmerian” said Crom, God of the Cimmerian’s and Keeper of the Riddle of Steel in an echoing voice like the rending and sundering of mountains, “then you shall have it.” He turned to the shimmering figure beside him, the being that had once known the name Valeria, and nodded. She took two steps and leapt off the mountain. Down toward the battle below…

Can we talk about the tactical smarts on display here, though? I don't want to say 'brilliance' because even I saw some things they could have handled better, but let's run through a few of the high points: -Wore heavy armor and took up better weapons. They were available, why not use them? -Took up a position in terrain that would reduce the cavalry's advantage. The close quarters of the stones almost made their horses more of a liability than an asset. -Knowing what routes the horses would be forced to take in those close quarters, they set up traps, not only taking advantage of their terrain, but also of the advantage they had in terms of time to prepare. In short, Conan didn't win this fight because of plot armor. He won this fight because he was smart and brave.

Hollywood of 2024, pay attention, THIS is how you make not only a scene, but a movie. No CGI, very little dialogue, some absolutely amazing camera work at the beginning with Subotai looking off into the distance where you see Thulsa Doom's riders and the camera holds that view. An amazing soundtrack that is just perfect in this scene in every way. Made on a budget of $20 million & grossed something like $79 million in 1982. Still holds up today against anything coming out now.
