Today we are doing another video showing how to replace a hard drive or SSD without loosing all your data. This time we are using a completely free application to do it. I will show you several ways to clone a hard drive or SSD. One way is fast and works in most cases and the other is very slow and works in all cases.

Last I had to clone my machine I transferred from a HDD to a SSD. I chose a Samsung SSD and they had disk cloning software available on their website. It was a version of some commercial software, though I've forgotten what manufacturer. I recognized it as I've used the original versions for many years at work. Samsung had bought a license to use it and called it the Samsung Disk Wizard. It might be worth checking if you are copying to or from a Samsung disk in your system.

The Samsung solution did not work for me, last year... it kept saying that my new SSD wasn't big enough, despite it being exactly the same size as the original HDD. Completely useless. Luckily, I had already used EaseUS on another system, so I fetched a free version of it that worked. Not sure if the newer versions still do...

@@robertcartier5088 It's not actually the same size. SSDs reserve 5-10% of their actual capacity for replacing damaged sectors. HDD just lock out damaged sectors when they find them, so they have full space. Even if they accounted for that making the SSD base size bigger, there's no way after that 5-10% subtraction the nail the same byte size of all hard drives of all brands. And in fact...

Thanks for all your helpful technical insights! I copied data from a smaller drive to a larger drive using Clonezilla's sector-by-sector feature. To utilize all of the space on my larger drive, I chose the advanced extra parameters-disc to local disc, option k1-to generate a partition table proportionally. When attempting to utilize the remaining space, the feature performs just as well as EaseUS when it comes to partition expansion.

21:37 yeah the recovery partition is always the rightmost partition, but if you clone the disk to a bigger one you will have C -> Recovery -> Empty space and you cannot just expand C into the space, you have to clone the recovery to the rightmost part of the empty space, then delete the old one, and then only then, expand C. This is a remnant of when only hard disk existed, btw. On SSD it doesn't make any sense to have an order for partitions, technically, as the data is not physically split, but only logically. Eventually they'll figure this out and we'll be able to resize any partition regardless of 'order'...

Thank you for the video. Using a second laptop, 2 SSD external cases & 2 of the USB ports on the old Lenovo laptop, I was able to clone my 512gb failing SSD to a new 2TB SSD by using my old laptop as a passthrough. Even my ACASIS NVMe M.2 Duplicator Dual-Bay Offline Clone USB C to NVME Docking Station would not work to clone the old SSD to the new one. I even made a bootable flash drive from the old failing SSD and that wouldn't install windows either. I can't believe I had this much trouble because I've cloned drives several times over the years when I upgraded to a larger drive. I've never had trouble cloning a drive. Even the 1st time I did it, before I knew about cloning, I made an image file from an old small drive and installed the image onto a new larger drive. Even that never gave me any problems. So if anyone is having the same kind of problems that I have been having, Lavasoft, 2 SSD caddies and a second computer to use as a passthrough is something you might try.

Tinker's Tip: If you buy a name brand retail boxed/packaged drive, it is very likely they offer a branded version of "a software company starting with A" you can install for free as part of that drive brand's "support" software. It won't have of all of the modules functional, but the Disk Clone module will function fully. The branded version of "a software company starting with A" will check to make sure there is the same drive brand detectable on the system doing the cloning, even if it is connected sata/nvme or USB and even if it is not a drive being cloned to or from, and then once detected, it will then run the clone module. The tip is, keep one of whatever brand drive connected to the computer, so later when you need to clone other drives, no matter those drive's brand, the "a software company starting with A" software you install originally will still work. And, if you ever decide to go to another brand drive, just uninstall the previous "a software company starting with A" install and then install the new brand's "a software company starting with A" version and continue to use it. I have been doing as such for about 5+ years now on my drive cloning / hardware testing PC. .

@trueriver1950

@@greybeard5774 that actually depends on the software you are using AND on the actual errors. One use of a disk cloning program is to get a copy of all the readable data that you then give to your recovery program: that way your recovery program does not risk corruption the original data. It will very often be possible to recover most of the files from a non encrypted system that has a sprinkling of bad sectors. Whether that's worth the effort largely depends on whether you kept backups: which of course you always do anyway, right? 😉

True Image 2016 is a bit of a gem. I've got a copy of it saved in my software archive. In the last few years I've been using True Image 2020, but that's just not as good. It's bloated and has a bunch of unnecessary stuff added such as anti-ransomware functionality that makes it much more of a system hog. It's also terrible at calculating the time a clone will take, often it's only half of what it says.

Thanks for the video. Easiest method is to clone existing HDD to an SSD of equal or larger capacity. Clonezilla does take a while to complete the cloning but it is probably the most reliable method of all. Obviously a good idea to back up all your data before doing anything like this. It is useful to run chkdsk or sfc on the C: Drive of the HDD to detect and fix any errors before cloning the HDD. That will take extra time especially with a large HDD but worth it for the peace of mind. I recently cloned a 2GB HDD to an external 2GB SSD via USB. Total size of files was in the order of 1.7GB. The whole process inc. an initial "chkdsk c: /r" took just over 3 hours using a 5yo Lenovo Notebook with an Intel I7 processor and USB 3.0. Installed the SSD into the Notebook and it's running a treat. Cheers from the Land Down Under.

I then disable the internal SSD and set the BIOS to boot from the USB connected NVME. It gave me the following errors: 1. No boot sector found, Press F1 2. F1 rebooted and this resulted in the W10 logo on the screen for a while before it threw up a message: "stop code: inasscessible boot device" 3. IT then rebooted itself and gave the message "No boot disk found", press F1 4. WHen I pressed F1 this time, it threw up a list of choices for F1 through F9. F4 and F5 booted it into SAfe Mode, F5 being with network. These both worked. So now I have this machine which will boot into safe mode from the clone, but will not boot normally. Any suggestions as to what I may have done wrong and how to fix it? Thanks....ArnieP

I'm a tech but out of practice and my training was 15 yrs ago. I'm trying to brush off the cobwebs. You may have solved your issue already. If not. Or in case it helps others.. my somewhat similar problem may help you. I cloned my drive following advice here and ran into a snag when I couldn't boot up on the new drive. 'No operating system found'. And the old drive would not work as a boot disk via usb. And I did not want to tear down the laptop again to pop the old drive back in because it was almost a complete teardown to access the hard drive bay. And stupid me, no backup of any kind, or recovery disc. I ran hardware diagnostics. The new drive passed all the tests as did the new ram stick I added. Then I used Hirens to boot up and checked the partitions. The cloning process added a new partition to my target drive. I didn't want to wipe the possibly wrong partition to try and get it to work. So I booted up with Hiren's boot cd PE (on bootable usb) did a list disk, select disk, then clean in diskpart. Then made it GPT. Then create partition primary. Followed by a fresh install. ( I had to let the windows install process DELETE the partition then chose NEW.) So note to me for the future, note size, type and order of partitions and do a full system backup and/or recovery discs or system image to external usb hard disc in case something goes awry during the cloning process.

Good video. Does this work on a Win 10 PC that would not load Win 11 due to being slightly out of spec for Win 11? I want to use Win 11 in the future on my PC, so can one use this method to load Win 11 instead into the Win 10 when swapping disks?

I did this just as you say but I couldn't get my laptop to boot to the thumb drive with my other laptop's source disk connected to my hosting laptop. So I had to start my hosting laptop with the boot drive then plug in my source drive through the USB and I already had plugged in the new SSD to my host laptop USB. It worked perfectly. But I can tell you it took 2 hrs trying to get the boot drive to load instead of the source drive. Crazy. but I got it thanks to you and this video. Some other cloning software may not have liked how it had to go through 2 USB ports to transfer that data efficiently.

Do you have to boot into the hirens boot OS or can you use the original OS drive to make the clone

I use the dd command in linux when I have to clone an old hdd/ssd to a new one. Never tried it with windows partitions but in theory, it should work as it copies everything. Just need a USB with any linux distro', your old hdd installed or on a USB dongle, and new ssd installed or o. USB dongle. Be careful when running the dd command as it can erase the wrong drive.

There was a little round sticker on that screw (that holds the SSD Drive) which I have now removed (This is my very first time opening this laptop ever) That screw (that holds the SSD Drive) is NOT budging, what do I need to do to loosen that so that I can switch that out with my new SSD drive?

In this video, you created a clone of your C drive, or the drive containing your OS. I have a secondary internal drive that I want to replace, but only because of size. This drive is also where I installed all of my Steam video games, close to 2TB, and I'm upgrading to a 6TB drive. Can you do a similar video showing how to do this please??

A much simpler and safer way to clone a drive (Windows or otherwise) is to boot Linux from a USB thumb drive and use the 'dd' command. This avoids all the risks of reading from an active file system, including your c: drive. No suspect third-party software is required. There are even options to tolerate bad blocks on the original drive. If the new drive is larger than the original, you can extend it using the standard Windows partition management tools.

@CyperCPU: Video suggestion: Initially, you brought up CHKDSK /F, which is great. You might try doing a video on CHKDSK (/F vs. /R)? /R tries to remap sectors on disk platters with bad sectors, and use the NTFS journal to do it, which is why it takes so long.

A quick question. My C drive is only 240GB SSD and is getting full quickly, even though I have installed a 4TB SSD and try to put everything onto that, it still stores extra bits onto the C drive (which I understand it needs to do.) which is filling it and slowing everything down. I just want to make sure I understand this correctly. If I buy a new 1TB SSD. I am able to move Windows 10 and all the contents of my current C drive onto the new 1TB SSD, to make that my new boot drive and C drive? Am I correct with that assumption?

Does the Lavasoft software copy disks with errors? I've tried to clone an old SSD to an NVME with Clonezilla but it keeps saying there are errors even though the original drive works fine and Windows doesn't find any problems. I'll give it a go anyway.

Thank you for the video. Question from a newbie, please excuse me if I don't explain to well. I have a 500gb SSD running Windows 10 on my desktop and I was told by my system that it (CPU) is not compatible with Windows 11 upgrade; That really means I would need an entire new build probably (my current gaming comp is 7 years old and well tweak back then) and if so, can I take my SSD and install on a new computer/motherboard? I would hate to lose all my files and have to start all over. Thank you again!

you're making things a little more complicated than they should be. just get a usb stick , install ventoy on it then add a clonezilla live image on it and youre set. i've backed up my hdd to an iso image and it took less than 10 minutes with a resulting file size of 13 gb, and to restore the image to a new hdd it only took it around 7 min. the backup was done via usb on another usb stick. it works so well it feels like magic.

Migrating "only the OS" from desktop 2TB HDD with a large data partition to a Crucial 500GB SATA SSD didn't work with the included True Image cloning software. Just stops processing at one point. Clock keeps spinning and then suddenly disappears? Macrium reflect free V.8 appears to have an option for selecting partitions off the HDD and clone to smaller SSD.... Not sure if this will work? Want to keep the 2TB HDD in the desktop as a cheap storage drive.

Not working, followed everything to a T and it blue screens on the new m.2 something about missing boot files. Re did it 3 times. Also something that is not in this video is the new version of this cloning program has a option now to create a new disk signature automatically checked, do we make a new one or clone the old disks signature over?

Since the video was made, Lazesoft disk clone wizard has added option to "Create a disk signature of your target disk that differs from the signature of your source disk." Should I leave that option checked or unchecked? Thanks for the Video!
@joeschafer1
@joeschafer1 3 ай бұрын
Actually you do probably do want to leave it unchecked, as a new signature will generally mess up your windows installation. It is not hard to change the signature after making the copy. to see disk signature on existing disk diskpart list disk select disk 0 ---or what ever volume your disk happens to be uniqueid disk you can take the id given by the last command and set your new disk to it by typing: uniqueid disk id=youridfromabove replace youridfromabove with disk signature that you want.
@joeschafer1
@joeschafer1 3 ай бұрын
Just make sure to remember to remove one of the disk before you boot and never put two disk with the same signature on the same system when you power it up (because windows will auto change one of the signatures to avoid a signature conflict)
@Samuitsuki

My first cloning didn't work, I did another attempt where I had unchecked the "create a disk signature of your target disk that difffers from the signature of your source disk" and that worked, but not entirely sure if that had anything to do with it.

Here is the scenario: using Aomei Bacupper and do a backup of your system drive and the system drive is installed on a particular brand and specifications, and on some point it crashes; buy a new SSD on a different brand and specifications with at least the same capacity on which you want to restore the previous backup; can it be restored that backup in such case like this? Namely, should the restoring SSD be the same brand and specifications, with the backed-up one or can it be different? Hope you can and would answer to this comment since you never mention this scenario in ANY of your video either of backing-up or cloning circumstance.
