It would fuel console wars and it wouldnt be a good representation of how those PS4 games would run on thr Xbox. Because on the Xbox, those games would be optmized for the console, without going through Windows and etc, so performance would be better. I get your point, but wouldnt be worth it

Seriously, these devs who squeezed all of that power from the jaguar chip should be put in a hall of fame. Just looks at ghosts of tsushima on base ps4, horizon zero dawn on base ps4, spider man, gears of war, halo 5 and so much more. It also speaks to the even lower level vulkan like API that is used, pretty much almost bare metal, which is what it takes to get these punching above their weight BY AT LOT, my raspberry pi 4b has just a slightly higher clock speed as the Xbox one...1.8ghz. Seriously, if you're reading this from Sony or Microsoft and any devs who achieved these beautiful games that brought us many hours of fun, I'm not religious but bless you. I deal with higher level programming, nothing of the low level, just bare metal these people have to painfully account for. Just the optimization alone...... makes you proud to be the same species as the people who can do that.

Hallelujah to that. Coding is king. Always. Sadly consoles are the only place left where the potential of the tech is maximised and beyond. The relentless iterations in the phone and PC space leaves so much hardware potential forever untapped and wasted. It’s just more brute force every six months. It simply shouldn’t be possible to make a God of War on PS4 or a Forza Horizon 4 on Xbox. But they did. Truly amazing. Coding is an art form and API’s make it all possible :)

@Lov Mir You do realize that outside of prototyping most IO work is handled by ASICs and is not processed on generell purpose Hardware ? GPUs are using compression for the datastream coming from the V-Ram since many years. Cell/Xenon were worse. They were designed to be absolutely horrible at everything common CPUs do well, and be very good at things common CPUs were not (until AVX extensions at least). Engines made for those CPUs suffer to run on PS4/Xbone and switch. WiiU got it even worse because it had no SIMD capabilities whatsoever, so it's floating point performance was 1/4 of a regular CPU of the time.

And despite that, we got the Doom games, Halo, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, God of War, Gears of War, Grand Theft Auto 5, The Last of Us Part 2, Fortnite, COD, etc. I'm glad that new machines have modern architecture, but it does go to show you that oftentimes the best thinking is done inside a box.

I obviously understand the importance of reserving some processing power for the proper functioning of the os, but seeing how seemingly "barebones" the Switch's os can look at times, I don't know if locking an entire core makes sense. Also, the Tegra X1 on paper should have 8 cores, the higher performance A57 cluster you mentioned and the A53s op is talking about. Do you happen to know if the A53s are present in the die and disabled, or if they are simply not there? platform specific optimization is a long, complicated, and arduous task that at the end of the day only improves ONE version of the game, then you have to do it all over again for every other platform you plan to support, which is why it is rare and limited in scope in reality despite the chestbeating from platform holders and gullible fanboys. its better to focus on issues that broadly improve all platforms and clear up any low hanging fruit first. We saw this with their coverage of the Ori for Switch miracle port, the first thing they did was improve the engine broadly in a way that was beneficial to all systems and only then did they get into anything switch specific.

The Switch has a much lower end CPU than the current Raspberry Pi (4 Cortex A53s vs 4 A57s) and if Doom Eternal can be ported to the Switch I can't see any reason why something with the same CPU setup as the Raspberry Pi couldn't get a Cyberpunk 2077 port. The Raspberry Pi does have a GPU that's essentially an expanded video decoder (VideoCore 6) so that parts unfortunately no good for games.

@@LAG09 I think it's not powerful enough. Consider that those consoles that run Doom Eternal at 60fps can't even make it to 30 in Cyberpunk. So with the Switch, they could get like 15fps at best with a beast of a optimization. 8:35 This is likely because of Nvidias Automatic threading service that uses CPU cycles to make sure draw calls being sent to the gpu are as threaded as possible. CPU Performance hit is usually outweighed by the GPU API gains however in this case because the CPU is so bad it is likely harming performance. IIRC theres an option in the NV drivers to disable this.

@@zofrea1 you're right. This is done because OpenGL has no native threading support (you can try and fake it using multiple contexts, but it isn't defined for implementations universally), and as it's higher level, is more based on the implementation itself. Nvidia allows you to change their implementation's functionality through the driver settings.

I don't think it's CPU threading issue. AMD GPUs simply need less bandwidth than Nvidia GPUs. Ok, one thing about the ram support: I was under the impression (but I may be wrong) that for DDR most BIOS will show you half of the speed that the module is rated at. This means that for a 2133MHz set of DDR3 sticks you would set your BIOS for 1066. 1333MHz would effectively mean overclocking the ram to 2666MHz. I think I'm not misremembering my DDR3 stuff but if I'm right then that means you guys managed to get a slight overclock of the RAM speeds over the XB1.

But what i'd like to see compared and tried with this machine is the durango dev kit software. It seems possible to me that this might be a clone of the original dev kit hardware platform, before the console was completed. Perhaps this is the dev kit bios, and perhaps that shipped with PC ram, instead of final interface of the console. Can anyone who has seen or used a durango dev kit, or even got one to pull apart do so and compare to this board? @digitalfoundry can you get a second hand durango dev kit and plug the hard drive in to this and see what happens?

Using 100% of cpu resources also doesn't say much about whether the code is efficient or not. Considering the rushed nature of the release, the likely conclusion to me is that the engine isn't as efficient as it can be rather than the game is just "next gen," whatever that means.

I don't think having the PS5 or Xbox Series X's bespoke APUs would matter much - at least for gauging CPU performance. Considering that they're Zen 2 cores that are almost completely in line with a Ryzen 7 3700X, learning about CPU performance would only take a simple stroll into the BIOS to gauge how close or far an equivalent PC would be off from those consoles. GPU power would be a different story - all that can really be done is underclocking or cutting off some performance by restricting how many CUs are used on a GPU, but even there, you wouldn't be able to wholly estimate what the consoles could truly offer.

So, run the same games on "Xbox PC" and on consoles, on the same settings and same resolution to see the difference in fps (with fps locked to console-level ofc).
