That's the best advice I could give someone who wants to be in Cyber Security. You must have the mindset of always wanting to improve and learn. Just because you land the job doesn't mean you can take it easy and coast. There's always gonna be new problems, unknowns, and technology to figure out. The question I always ask at the end of interviews is, "What kind of qualities are you looking for in a ideal candidate?" Every hiring manager wanted someone who is tenacious, won't give up, wants to learn, and is curious. They can teach the skills and tools, they can't teach the mindset.

Lost my IT Support job the end of March with the DoD during probationary period. Had a super toxic supervisor and things just didn't pan out. I am now using my VA benefits to go to WGU for Cyber Security which I'm super pumped about. I've taken the last 2 months to work on my professional development and was able to clear the Network+ which completes the CompTIA trifecta for me and gives me a huge head start in my degree program. The job market sucks right now but at least I have the time and resources to change my circumstances.

Just keep in mind that the GI Bill, which pays for the majority of your school, is unlocked based on how many "active duty" days you've done. In total, it takes 1080 active duty days to unlock 100% of your GI Bill. Aside from that, they offer 4500 a year for tuition assistance. This is something I wish my recruiter would have told me back when I joined.

I think with all things the industry you're applying for matters a lot when it comes to competitive market. Hey Josh - longshot but wanted to ask for an opinion. Currently studying cyber at WGU but I do have a previous BA in history. I was finally able to land a help desk role that isn’t the traditional help desk but allows me to gain technical experience (support with our applications, setting up/disabling users). My financial aid is about to run out and will be forced to pay out of pocket. Finding a hard time feeling like I should pay out of pocket especially since I already have a degree in a different field and was able to pivot into this field just based off having the A+ certification. Just wondering if I should just focus on gaining skills in this position or if I should continue with this degree.

I agree with everything you said. Cloud is so heavily leveraged and security is being properly baked into cloud. I have on my list to make a video about this next.

Trump's fools are projecting their pessimism, indulging fantasy that is bathed in ignorance. The unemployment rate is the same in June 2024 as it was in November 2016. Presidents have as much control over labor markets as they do the weather. Trump's followers somehow believe that he can protect them from economic disruptions that are the inevitable result of major technological shifts driven by private enterprise. Labor displacement is as inevitable with the maturation of AI/ML as it was with the invention of the mainframe as it was with the horseless carriage as it was with the invention of electric light as it was with the invention of the cotton gin. www.bls.gov/charts/employment-situation/civilian-unemployment-rate.htm

That "school" is a diploma mill. One aspect of college is proving you can make a commitment. Getting a bacjelors in a year destroys that commitment. No, WGU is not worth it when enough people (managers, HR, etc) like me feels it is a diploma mill. They need to stop advertising how easy it is to get a diploma. Those hiring managers are seeing that as well.
@cyberlocc
@cyberlocc Ай бұрын
It's not at all a Diploma mill. I work in Higher Education, and even in HU we do not consider it a Diploma mill, and lots of Faculty and Staff at Traditionals hold WGU degrees.
@lilithoath3580

How is an accredited institution a diploma mill? The vast majority of what we learn in college we end up forgetting in the long run anyway. We go to college to learn HOW to learn. Everything else we need, we learn on the job. Most degrees (with the exception of some fields like healthcare) should not take four years to complete

If you think WGU is a diploma mill. You’re just clueless. You walk out with tons of industry certifications that are difficult to get. O way around that but competency and hard work.
@ScottPlude
@ScottPlude Ай бұрын
Yup, I struck a nerve. The industry certs are great but the diploma is less of a commitment than a traditional college. Employers see less commitment. Troll me all you want but your feelings are not more important than my facts.
@cyberlocc
@cyberlocc Ай бұрын
@@ScottPlude It's not less commitment, you are just speaking nonsense and showing you are clearly clueless. The WGU degrees require the same amount of coursework and standards as a 4yr degree. The fact you can study 80 hours a week instead of 20, is why it can be achieved faster. Thinking doing something MORE everyday, and thus finishing faster overall is less commitment is flat out ignorant. Add in the fact, that WGUs Cyber degree has literally won awards and has partnerships with the US Government and is endorsed by the NSA.

I wish I knew, GPT said this (not so helpful): - There isn't a direct equivalent to CyberSeek specifically for Linux system administrators. However, there are several platforms and resources that offer career insights, job demand data, and skill development for Linux system admins. Here are a few useful ones: Linux Professional Institute (LPI) LPI provides certification tracks, career paths, and skills assessments tailored for Linux professionals. CompTIA Linux+ CompTIA Linux+ offers certification information, job role insights, and career resources for Linux administrators. Red Hat Learning Community Red Hat Learning Community is a platform for Red Hat certification paths, skills development, and community discussions around Linux system administration. LinkedIn Jobs Insights LinkedIn Jobs allows you to search for Linux system admin roles, providing insights on job demand, required skills, and location-based salary data. Indeed Career Guide Indeed Career Guide offers career insights, average salaries, and skills needed for Linux system administrators. Glassdoor Glassdoor provides company reviews, salary data, and job listings specifically for Linux system admin roles. These resources can help Linux system admins understand job market trends, required skills, and career opportunities in the field.
