What preliminary knowledge/skills are really the ones that allow you to freelance. Your general area is consulting, but consulting on what skills that your clients don’t have. I’ve been an analyst and an engineer for about 5 years now and would like to begin some freelancing work for extra recurring income.

Sure, if you want to specialise in this it's a possibility. Most of the work I perform is either compliance audits or pentetration testing though. That's my own main focus :)
