As much as I hate that Eddie died, I kind of love the scene when he goes up against IT - it always felt to me like he was sacrificing himself for his friends, giving Beverly enough time to get IT. The other three were clearly vulnerable and unable to do anything - these were the only people he felt connected to, that he loved and he couldn't bear anything happen to them and regardless whether he had hoped to get away with his "acid attack" or not- that he found the courage to do so is so badass in my book. Watched the series again a few days ago and I still love it, I just have thing for long winded mini-series that really highlight the characters (I guess not if I didn't like them but usually if people bother to focus on the characters, there is always something to them that makes it interesting to watch them and their relation to the others ...) Plus I just don't feel scared by much anymore anyway, I really need to get sucked in deep to a story to feel frightened - I want to I so love feel my heart racing and that fear to turn off the light.

It's the eyes. The spider animatronic has big dumb googly eyes. I don't mind the creature looking weird and alien, but the face is too cartoonish in its features. It should have had black emotionless eyes like a shark or something.

One thing I always loved about this movie is that feeling of comradery between the characters. You really buy their friendship and grow attached to them. Each death feels really personal, like you're really loosing a friend. The kids did a great job. It also makes me nostalgic for being a kid and having childhood friendships. Even though I was obviously raised in different decade, the theme is universal.

One thing I've noticed in a lot of Steven King stories is that he doesn't go for the whole "bad guy or monster is still alive" trope. I personally really hate that trope, because it just makes it feel like the entire thing is pointless and completely hopeless. I know there are people who find it more realistic, but I prefer a good and conclusive ending, which is why I choose to believe that It is gone for good and the remaining members of the Losers' Club got their happilly ever after. I think the laugh at the end could be symbolic of how, while the monster is dead, the conditions that allowed it to flourish are still there; It is basically the physical manifistation of things like racism, sexism, homophobia, abuse, and as long as those things exist, it's not entirely a victory. But there is hope; they beat It and they get to live their lives now free of all the things that held them down before

It's still alive. In several books after, there's hints that Pennywise lives. Personally, I believe that either, like Raiden from Mortal Kombat, you can only kill the mortal form it takes, but not IT itself, or it is reborn every 23 years.

From what I've been told, the sex scene was meant to be about having to grow up way earlier than they should have, since they were thrown into quite an adult world from having to face It, along with the things they had to deal with growing up.

I watch a lot of horror movies with my mom, a few years ago we decided to watch this, (quick bit of background, she’s very scared of clowns and Pennywise kinda freaked her out a bit) and when the scene at 5:35 happened and we heard Bev’s response at 5:39 I thought it’d be pertinent to jokingly shout “That sounds like something A CLOWN WOULD SAY!” My mom laughs really hard, but continues the joke “Is that your clown-pole in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?!” Great mother-daughter bonding time.

You're not alone in your love for the The Shining miniseries. It may drag at parts, but I love it. It's atmospheric and Jack's descent into madness is handled really well. I'd love to see you do a series on it.

I also love the tv series, it's not that I disliked the Kubrik movie but I never really felt that awed by it and when I saw the mini series I was really intrigued by how much detail it spent on the family dynamic, the dad's problems, Danny's abilities and how much stronger the mom came off. But then again I am sucker for interpersonal stuff more than outright scares (as honestly that more real scary stuff with the dad's problems, are so much more frightening than freaky ghosts to me)

Also, in case you're still wondering about the solidarity-sex part of the book- "I wasn’t really thinking of the sexual aspect of it. The book dealt with childhood and adulthood -1958 and Grown Ups. The grown ups don’t remember their childhood. None of us remember what we did as children-we think we do, but we don’t remember it as it really happened. Intuitively, the Losers knew they had to be together again. The sexual act connected childhood and adulthood. It’s another version of the glass tunnel that connects the children’s library and the adult library. Times have changed since I wrote that scene and there is now more sensitivity to those issues." - Stephen King, according to one of the threads on the Stephenking.com forum; post dated Nov. 17, 2013 King confirmed the statement through his agent: "That sounds like my statement. To it I’d just add that it’s fascinating to me that there has been so much comment about that single sex scene and so little about the multiple child murders. That must mean something, but I’m not sure what." (Keep in mind that Stephen King is probably a first-wave liberal and, as fit the atmosphere of _his_ heyday, remains seemingly more concerned with the public's "sensitivity to those issues" than with any of his own. That's not to disqualify King's point about America's quickness to gloss over the high juvenile body count…though I think it does come off a little deflective to me.)

No mention of Tim Curry being the super snobby concierge in Home Alone 2? Still, Pennywise is his best role in my opinion. Right next to his role in Rocky Horror Show. Great review of IT, I really like the series as well, all because of Tim Curry.

A cool scarier idea they could’ve explored: have IT exploit Bev’s sharp aiming skills, by tricking her into (nearly) killing her friends. Imagine IT took the form of Bev’s father or abusive BF (or whatever), she shoots at that but instead hits Mike nearly killing him. This would better explain her emotional breakdown while waiting in the hospital for Mike.

Personally, I like the spider monster design from the end of the miniseries, I like the idea of It's "true form" being something vaguely akin to a spider yet also alien/demonic as opposed to just literally being an oversized, earthly species of spider (but I confess I'm not inherently afraid of spiders, hence why I prefer the more monstrous, eldritch abomination angle for It's appearance, to me that's just scarier). Also, as a fan of practical effects, I actually dig what they did with the prop design, it looks great for a tv miniseries monster from the early 90s, I feel too many people online are harsh on it (though I confess I'm a huge kaiju fan and love practical effects in general).

You go more into depth with this mini-series than most others have, and hearing your perspective makes me reconsider mine about the series. I'm starting to like it more now. I've always liked it, but I felt it was kind of campy, and I think that quite a bit less now. It has so many elements that are well-planted and pay-off superbly. What I love the most about this, though, is how IT preys on the very basic, primal childhood fears that specifically relate to the kids in the mini-series: Clowns, monsters, blood, and, ultimately, SPIDERS. I'm right there with you on that one.

Tim Curry also voiced Captain Hook in the early-90s cartoon "Fox's Peter Pan & The Pirates" -- because they were self-consciously trying to cleave closer to the book and veer away from Disney, his take on the character was as an amoral gentleman who valued fairplay and honor but (to quote the 7th Doctor) "scratch the Victorian veneer and there's something nasty underneath." His was the most compelling and threatening version of the character I've ever seen.

If nothing else one thing I would like to point out is I get why Pennywise's final form is a Spider. He's all about fear and Spiders are the most common fear out there, even more than clowns. So it makes sense a creature that turns into whatever a person is scared of would mostly reseemble the thing most if not all people are afraid of.

If you want to try the 1979 Salem's Lot miniseries, there's an alternate shorter cut (usually labeled "Salem's Lot: The Movie") that tightens up the pacing considerably. Unfortunately, it's never been released on DVD as far as I know (though it can be found on VHS), and even more unfortunately it cuts out the resolution to a few secondary characters' story arcs.

George Romero was originally going to direct this, and it was going to have a few more episodes. He left after ABC kept getting cold feet and constantly cut down on the run time. I think even Tommy Lee Wallace was supposed to make it as three parts at first, but there were last minute run time cuts he had to contend with. And I like The Shining miniseries alright, even if it is too long and some of the scenes don't really work.

If a horror movie has more characters I don't like than characters I do, it completely loses me. Even if it has scenes that would normally scare me, I get too annoyed to be scared and they just bore me. As for the review as a whole, you gave me a new appreciation for the mini-series. I thought it was alright, but I didn't really appreciate the differences when I first saw it, only noting how different it was and being annoyed by that. I rewatched it after your Part 1, and after that and your Part 3 adding to that, I can appreciate it a lot more.

what amuses me to no end is as a kid I used to watch this show called the wildthornberrys and tim Curry voiced the father whom was as different as can be from his normal roles. I also recall a really bad generic spy or army movie that I cant recall the name of were the most memorable thing about it was that Tim played the I think main villan. I vaguely recall talking to his evil comrades about a new world order were they would all own royic roices. like I said it was a bad movie.I personally loved his role as Hex'ss from fern gully. yes I know its a bad tree hugger film but he just brought so much glee to the role.he also played a Russian commander or president in red alert 3.

Great four part review! This has been a lot of fun to watch. It's nice to see how much you love this mini-series... Like I said in the comments for part 1; while I do think the "It" mini-series has a lot of flaws, I still got a soft spot for it. I'm pretty sure it was the first Stephen King movie I ever saw. I still rewatch it every couple of years, and enjoy it for both the good and the bad... I had a teacher who didn't like how the big reveal of It's true form was a giant spider. He said he thought that it would have been better if It was the spider we saw throughout the film, and It only became the clown at the end. Not sure if that would've worked, but I think if worked around a little, that could've been an interesting turn of events... I really loved this "Film Den". Can't wait for the next one! P.S... And just because I'm curious; since you're a Stephen King fan, what do you think about The Dead Zone (1983) with Christopher Walken?

Yeah, something is wrong with that spider in the movie. I hate spiders, but that one in the movie is not scary or creepy at all. Maybe because it walks slow? Or walks too robotic because of the stop motion? I don't know, but it ruined the ending of the movie for me. (That spider would be great in a Fantasy movie though.)

None of Stephen King's horror novels are written scary, they mainly go for creepy to immensely unsettling. This does not always translate well to a visual medium like a movie, but written down they work very well. The IT mini series actually nail the unsettling nature of the book, in my opinion at least. Especially Tim Curry's portrayal of Pennywise. I loved "The Stand" mini series, on the whole, but I hated the end. (No Spoilers) It needed something else in place of the "Deus Ex Machina" thing that was there. Some of the "Best" adaptations of a King novel or story have had either their ending changed or were adapted with the visual medium in mind and changed sections or aspects of the story completely or partly to better fit or work better (The Shining, The Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me and The Green Mile come to mind).

I came across a funny fantheory a couple days ago. IT is really a boggart, and the story is about a group of muggle children/adults trying to fight a boggart without magic. Finally, this is non-IT related, or anything you talked about in your video. I don't know how often you and/or Lee watch wrestling (you never got to my question about that last Jan when you were doing Q&A videos), but the Hell in a Cell graphic looks a lot like the Lament Configuration. Too much like it, if you ask me. I saw that, and thought to myself "I should bring that up to Dena just for shits".
@Cyborcat
@Cyborcat 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I noticed the 27 vs 30 thing. I think it's because the mini-series came out three years after the book, so they made that little alteration so they could keep the times similar. Yeah, I still haven't gotten around to that last round of Q&A XD I still hope to do it eventually, maybe in a couple weeks. Anyway ... I'm a casual wrestling fan and I generally only watch it when one of my favorites is wrestling. I hadn't seen the Hell in a Cell graphic. I just looked it up and I didn't see anything particularly similar to the puzzlebox, unless I was looking at the wrong thing. Do you have a link or something?

I honestly couldn't remember if you brought it up in an earlier video. If you did, sorry. I can't find anything at the moment. Probably too early for YT vids because the only thing I can find is fake promo's for matches that'll never happen with shitty rap dubbed over it. But it's something you can'twon't see in a single picture. It needs to be the actual transition they use from one match to the next. I'll keep an eye out and if I can find a video, I'll hit you up again.

Very well done! It's been a long time since I've watched the miniseries, and I've never read the book, I tried back when I was a teenager and just couldn't get into it, which is probably why I never understood why everyone forgot again when they left Derry. I guess I always thought that since they finally killed It, that part of the curse would die too and they would remember each other. At least Bev and Ben got married though, I did really like them.

I love how this movie makes Bev and Ben end up together, I wanted them to get up together in the books. I actually liked Silver Bullet though, but I'm a huge fan of Anne of Green Gables so seeing Megan Follows as the sister was pretty cool.

Part of my disliking Silver Bullet might be a case of being bias because I read the book first and the movie made a lot of changes I didn't like.

I feel like the ending would have been better if the just fought the clown. It could have used all of it's victims to throw them off in the battle and it would have been a mind-fuck kind of battle. Frankly just learning the creepy supernatural clown was just a spider all along seemed so mundane.

Huh. I've only read like 4 of Stephen King's books and I had no idea that they all take place in the same universe. But I guess because I haven't read the dark tower that might be why. I've heard nothing but good things from that series.

wonderful review one of my favorite story's Personally i disagree tho on It's "true" form I prefer it to look more like an otherworldly creature shaped in the basic form of a spider then just a giant spider. Mostly because spiders don't scare me (i think they are beautiful animals) and I just love seeing eldritch design's

I saw the movie between parts 2 and 3 of this review, and I'll stick with watching the miniseries. The movie was great until they made one story change in the last bit that ruined it entirely and made me so mad. So, thank you for reviewing this and really putting the time in. There's a real difference between someone reviewing a movie they watched expressly for the purpose of reviewing it, and someone reviewing a movie because they have a genuine affinity and respect for it. I'm with you on The Shining miniseries. I always found the Kubrick version distracting due to his treatment of Duvall. She seemed so emotionally removed from the actual movie events. Someone that is honestly terrified and not acting, isn't fun to watch. Weber and De Mornay felt more like the written characters (I could do without that kid), strengthened by sticking with the book ending and character redemption. Not having it be Jack that was always attacking Wendy (and sticking with the croquet mallet), but more often the hotel/spirits, also helped. Who knew a couch and chairs could be so menacing? The effects may not have aged well, but the topiary animals were the most awesome thing to me at the time lol A disproportionate amount of hours in my life have been spent watching both that miniseries and Rose Red.
@Cyborcat
@Cyborcat 7 жыл бұрын
Hmm, which change, if you don't mind my asking? I did love the new movie, but part of me wishes it followed the book a bit more. Still, I thought it was good on its own. I'm surprised at how many people are mentioning that they liked The Shining mini-series. Well, you're about the third, but it's three more than I expected XD
