Looks fantastic!! If you try using electrolysis to remove the the rust it would be less labour and it would remove the internal rust as well.

Hydrogen embrittlement would compromise the frame structure using electrolysis or any acid bath methods. But then again, depends on how long that process last, and how much the restored frame would be subjugated to stress. Also there’s a process to eliminate Hydrogen.

So I see this rusty frame become essentially a brand new bicycle. The thought hits me. That bicycle will still be around when the expensive carbon fiber bikes have been buried in a landfill.

thats wat i think as well;i have 12 bikes,a few are 2000-3000$,found a 1996 Trek 970-120$ and i cant explain how good frame is and how smooth ride is.its on mixed xt,lx gear,that even after those 27 years is smoother then new deore.

Its surface rust. Probably the frame was good, stripped off paint and time went by before final build
