I am a father to two wonderful boys, Nicholas and Alexander. I am a bike shop owner/bike fitter/coach in San Marcos - San Elijo Hills... and Hall of Fame Ultra Cyclist - of 3 different cycling organizations.
I climbed 1,000,000 feet in 2015 in only 10 months (legitimate gain no iPhone Strava app or Elevation Correction which gives you more gain). I repeated 1M feet of climbing in 2016 and 2018 and 2019 I have also Everested 9X -- 29,029 feet in one single ride #everesting .
I currently hold the record for the shortest distance Everest in North and South America 29,200 feet in 78 miles.
I have been named a legendary Ultra Cyclist- a title I consistently work hard to live up to because of what it means in the small ultra cycling community.
I completed 2- Person Race Across America (RAAM) in 2007. I have finished the Furnace Creek 508 SOLO (508 miles 35,000 feet of climbing non-stop race) six consecutive years in 2006, 2007 (Fixed Gear) 2008, 2009, 2010 2011, then came back in 2013 (tandem) and 2014 (Tandem) 2015 (tandem) and 2017 as a Two Person Mixed setting the course record with Lori Hoechlin. A total of 11 Furnace Creek/Silver State 508 finishes with a PR of 28 hours 52 minutes. I was inducted in the Furnace Creek 508 Hall of Fame class of 2011.
I am a Trans Iowa finisher (only 57 finishers out of 250 participants in the last five years at the time). Trans-Iowa is 320 mile (course varies yearly) totally unsupported gravel race held under adventure racing format.
I have also attained Super Randonneur (200km, 300km, 400km and 600km unsupported events) multiple years. I am a cycling coach with clients ranging from endurance cyclists, competitive triathletes, and beginners just entering the sport of cycling.
And now that you read all of that - I am also just an everyday Joe, just like you. I own a bike shop work and 60 hours a week, have a family, have a coaching business and try to do ultra events on limited training time. I’ve never been a professional cyclist. I do what I do out of passion for the sport. I suffer just like you do. I get it done out of pure stubbornness, pride and perseverance.

Hey George, this is the Darryl that sent you the email. Wow, thank you so much! That was super kind of you to make this video in response. That was right on the money of what I was needing to know. I'll likely get a pair of both the SQ Lab and the PI bibs given your comments and William's comment. FYI the saddle I mention, the 60X, is a brand new one from SQ Lab. It uses a new material from BASF and is apparently really comfortable. I've only just received it yesterday and haven't had a chance to try it out yet. If it doesn't work for me, I'll try your go to 612 next. I currently use a Brooks B17 saddle which has a niche market. It's comfortable but in time it tends to sag like a hammock and then the nether regions suffer over long distance. I'm super impressed with the detail of your endurance rides. And here I thought that 1000km ride would be an accomplishment. Sounds like it'd be a warm up ride to you. I really enjoy your channel. I see I'm not a subscriber (thought I was!) so expect that number to go up 1 closer to 2000 right after I post this comment. Thanks so much for the content, and any and all endurance related vids will be graciously consumed.

You’re right on with your bib recommendations. I have both the SQlab bibs ( all their various thickness bibs) and the Pearl Izumi w/ levitate air pads. When I first received the Sqlabs bib , I thought, … no way. On using them , it quickly became obvious that all the extra padding of other bibs was just getting in the way. I find the SQlab bibs extremely supportive. On the other hand. , the new PI bib with the levitate air pad is exquisite. The bib is the best I’ve had by far( and I’ve tried them all). You don’t even feel the bib short when it’s on. However , given that the two have somewhat different philosophies, I’d be hard pressed to chose a favorite. The deciding factor for me is the differences with the material used…. SQlab bib material… not very inspiring…. the PI bib material…. utter luxury! Like George says… you do you! Bibs are as different for different backsides as saddles are.

@@SeeYouUpTheRoad Been subscribed for a while. Keep up the great work, the authenticity is inspiring. The audience will come. No pressure, but if in time you might consider another question from the proverbial peanut gallery: As a relative newbie (2 years of road cycling), it is hard to say that I fit the bike or that I might want/need to adjust the bike as I learn and ride further and more frequently. Are there brands or things to consider avoiding when purchasing a new/used bike and for maximizing the potential of "bike fitting"? It seems that some brands with proprietary parts might be expensive to replace, or even impossible to adjust (e.g., a front fork having been cut to fit a previous owner might no longer be available, a unique seat post...) and even with an experienced local bike shop professional like yourself helping us along, there still can be changes needed in time.

I've never tried Assos bibs. My favorite bibs so far are Velocio. They fit my long torso'd body so nicely with a high level of compression. I wonder if their clothing is geared towards torso-centric cyclists :). I've recently purchased two Pearl Izumi bibs, I believe they are the Levitate ones, and I find myself searching and reaching for these to wear over and over. They feel less compressive than Velocio but other than that they are SO comfortable. I haven't noticed a long-torso issue with these either, maybe something to do with how the straps fasten together in the front? And as you've mentioned several times the incredible value of the Pearl Izumi bibs. They cost significantly less than Velocio. Right now I only have 2 pair of the Pearl Izumi bibs but will be adding more in the not-too-distant future. They rock and I can afford them too ha ha

We can get you some Assos to try out. I will need to confirm if the PI bibs you have are Levitate Chamois equipped. Also the Velocio brand was purchased by SRAM. Hopefully they will be available for purchase through SRAM soon enough for you.

Hey mate I got the pearl izumi pro a while back and superb bibs. Awesome chamois and I can go well over 100m in comfort. I'm looking for another pair now but at a discount of course. I've stumbled across Sugoi RS Pro 2 bibs. Have you come across them before? There's not a lot on the internet and all info is based on original pro bibs and almost a decade old. Might pull the trigger tonight so just reaching out for advice if you're around. Cheers C

No worries. There's not a lot of info on my net, but what is there is very positive, however, all seems to be the previous models. Anyway cheers for the izumi recommendation as they're spot on. Ride on 👊

My thought is that the padding in most shorts is way too much. I believe the padding pushes up against the prostate and perineal area causing pressure, despite a cutout or pressure relief zone such as the SQLabs or BiSaddle saddles. I use a BiSaddle SRT 2.0. Great saddle yet still I have these issues. I have prostate enlargement. Are there any shorts that have thin padding and a prostate AND perineal cutout. I think you really only need some padding at the ischial tuberosities and virtually nothing at the perineum. What are your thoughts?
@SeeYouUpTheRoad

I have 2 pair of SQ Lab bibs. They have minimal padding. They work great with my leather saddles since you don’t need much. I don’t know how they make their bibs now. I would look into tri shorts they are known for minimal padding.

Hi. What model saddle are you recommending from SQ Labs? The 612? I’ve only ridden Ergon saddles and from my bike fit I switched from the S/M size to their M/L size. I’ll have to check their measurement for my sit bone width. Since they come in sizes 12-15 I’m assuming if I can find the bike fit report it will know what my width is but does SQ labs state what size is best knowing that? Thanks
@SeeYouUpTheRoad
@SeeYouUpTheRoad 10 ай бұрын
I ride a 612 Ergowave non active in a size 14. I don’t know if bike fitters measure your sit bones as SOP. When you figure it out or need my help I sell SQ Labs saddles and ship worldwide

The endurance bibs are great for the money and the pad is the same as their highest end premio the progetto X2(my favourite pad on the market) you really have to try them on in a shop though as their sizing is extremely "race svelte".

Hello George, I have Castelli and Assos bib shorts and they’re too tight for my vital assets. Do you know of anyone making bib shorts for the 100kg+ rider? The Castelli would be fine if they allowed a few more inches in the nether regions. Thanks, Laurence

@@davidadamus177if 10 years old you might have trouble finding the exact same saddle new in their line up. Saddles come and go often times they will discontinue your favorite saddle. I tell people when they find the saddle that works for them they should buy 2!
