Today's video is a beautiful and fun one - and epitomizes what cycling is about for me. Good times with friends and now, courtesy of the e-bike, family - because Jayne takes on her second ever climb..... and it's a big one 17km all the way to 2700M above sea level !
Col du Galibier departing from La Grave. We join Ruben, Sifra, Thomas, Robert and Danique for a magnificent day out..... perfect weather and incredible vistas. And I can report that having completed the climb departing from Valloire to the North, a few days later during La Marmotte, this was my preferred route. Both are incredible, but departing from La Grave is a bit more spectacular in my opinion.
At the summit, Ruben provides an alluring option for a bonus climb, Col de Sarenne ! 13km and +900m all the way back to Alpe d'Huez

Thanks ever so much Don - I hugely appreciate your support and reaching out 🙏💯. And wow! 🤯 Climbing a volcano - and 55km +3000m in one climb is sensational!!! 🤩. I didn’t even realise such a climb existed!! I definitely found the altitude an issue - because London is at sea level. The more time a person spends at altitude over the years the faster they adapt - and all people are impacted in a different way. But to give you a feel for the exact impact on my power - immediately after returning from La Marmotte I did an hour of power outdoors in London using the same power meter. 1 hour 277W - vs 251W on Alpe d’Huez . I could have potentially gone a little harder on the Alpe - so reckon the altitude cost me about 20W 👍. I’ve got a little video to come on this

Our pleasure for sharing this flow cycling 💯 - and thanks ever so much for reaching out with such a wonderful and supportive comment 🙏💪 . I have indeed found cycling incredible for leaving the stresses of the world behind for a few hours, and also actually enjoying the countryside (I’m not really into hiking … ). But to your point the issue is on holiday or weekends, it’s quite a chunk of time so the e-bike for Jayne can be a game changer 👌. I’m guessing the gravel riding in the Alps is on another level - a bit like the Lake District, and when my skills improve, it’s something I may well give a go.. Cheers 👍

Immediately brings back the memories... I really can't wait to get back there. Col de Galibier is very much on the list. However, I can also recommend Col d'Izoard (very pretty, especially the south side), and Col de l'Iseran (also from the south side). So far only rode them by car, but my god the landscape is to die for. And Ruben making that climb look so easy, while it really isn't. That's proper hard work. @@BikeRacingWithoutMercy Thanx so much Phill. I had some big jumps in hours over the last 2 months from those regular 1hrs sessions I got use to since I got back on the bike in February. I think I need a few days of rest and talk about a mammoth ride once can clearly say that the amount of meters of climbing you are packing out is unbelievable. Climbing and keeping the cadence relatively high is a challenge. Was wondering what your thoughts was on the watts and zones and applying them to these massive real life climbs. Doing those 1 or 2hr indoors sessions in those zones compared to the real life climbs could be rather different ... Anyways ... Cheers and looking forwards as usual

Thank you for a brilliant video on what seems to be the lesser documented side of the Galibier, sometimes you just stumble upon hidden gems on KZbin, you have a new subscriber! I am heading to Bourg d'Oisans from Scotland in a few weeks and plan to take try out both these cols at some point. What is your verdict on cycling through the tunnels on the road from the dam up to Col du Lautaret? I have heard mixed reviews, but your video makes them look very manageable and sensible as long as you keep your wits about you... is this the case?

Agreed - a sublime climb on a perfect day, Lord 🤩! The issue we faced was living at 2000m raises the HR and worsens the sleep initially - so a few of us suffered with higher HR for a given power. I noticed the difference all week - and filmed a little comparison to illustrate the impact when back in London . More to come 👍

Hello Phil. I’ve just discovered your channel, and I must say it’s a delight to meet you! I appreciate your positive energy and smiles, leave me feeling inspired, and so, thanks for sharing. I started cycling 3 years ago and love it but haven’t got into it to the level you seem to have - well done you! PS my wife’s Dutch and I wouldn’t want you pronouncing your new favourite topping slightly incorrectly- the “stroop” in appelstroop is pronounced like the English word hope. So, “str” “ope”. I think the Dutchies in your chalet were being too polite!

Thanks ever so much SPSggl 🙏 - and I massively appreciate you reaching out ! Ruben and the other Dutchies were super lovely to Jayne and I - so thanks for providing the correct pronunciation🙏. Strope it will be - I do love that stuff - nitroglycerin for the cyclist 💪🤣. We must have started around the same time - and I’m so glad I found the sport. I found a polarised approach to training plus a Zwift race per week over the winter great to build the fitness 💯

Great video Phil. It takes me back to my time living near to Briancon. Good call on the pacing stratergy for the marmotte. The telegraph followed by the galibier soon become far from two separate climbs did you find? The rest inbetween just being a blur. And Alpe d'huez at the end is never anything like riding as a single ascent! Looking forward to your marmotte video.

Thanks ever so much Simon 🙏 - you were lucky to live there 🤩 Yep - I was glad I reduced my target power, because everything you say I too found. It’s a long old climb up the Telegraph and Galibier - very little respite …. and the Alpe at the end was a slog !!! Marmotte video is in edit - and will be released next Sunday 🤞

Feels like your speed at those gradients don't go along with the watts unless you are rather light, is this so?
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Messi - I weighed about 62kg that week - and given the gradients were generally not that steep on Galibier 12-16km/h is about right for the power for me. 👍

10:30 talking to Jayne's behind, at 200 watts & 16 km/h 🤣 Fantastic draft from her, so funny to see people sucking her wheel 😃 Last weekend my GF and I took part in an event on our eBikes (I think there were over 1000 cyclists, she made a little video collecting our images - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZizmKSkbc-Vr9E ) and it's so funny to see the reactions, there were snobs but there were mostly open-minded people 😎 the col was closed to circulation from both sides for the day, amazing.

Can’t beat a little motor pacing, Pierre-Alain 😁 - and for sure e-bikes are the future. They make cycling accessible for all and allow friends and facilities to enjoy the climbs and vistas together 💯. I loved the video Angela and yourself made 👌 Col du Klausen is beautiful - cobbles switchbacks and sensational views back down the mountain 🤩 . Definitely looking forward to seeing more 👍
