Also riding long ride on flat bar bikes will cause more numbness as you cant shift your hands into different positions. Drop bar allows for 3 different hand positions at least and that is much more super comfortable. This is why i suggest people to avoid buying hybrid bikes with flat bars for long road rides.

The lever reach adjusting part is really great, I know this exists for a long time but never see how it works this directly. Also I want to note is sometimes it’s the rider’s problem despite of the bike. There do exist an optimum position based on science and physics, at that position, you are well supported, well stretched but not over stretched, all the contact points are inline with the rule of ergo, and you are aero and powerful. If you don’t have the flexibility for this position, work it out, if you don’t have the strength, work it out. Human himself is adaptable, most of the time, it’s just the rider is too weak. Most of the uncomfortable would go away as you become stronger, what don’t go away for a long time, that’s maybe the setup’s fault. You can’t adapt to that optimum position if you don’t ride that position.

I had painful firsts when riding in mud, snow or bad gravel with my cyclocross bike. Double warping handlebar helped. I just needed something thicker to squeeze. It's like axe versus rake. When you chop woods with axe you need something to hold from.. so the axe usually has thicker handle. While raking hay.. you don't need such thick handle, the thin handle is better for control and weight... mostly for weight. Same is with bicycle handlebar.. Riding fast on really bad road, you need to hold handlebar little bit harder, than when riding on smooth road. That's why the doublewrapped handlebar feels more comfortable on cross bike.. not that much of because extra cushion, but rather because better position for you thumb when squeezing handlebar.. you can't squeeze, or push the thumb closer to index finger so well when the cap between index finger and thumb gets too small.. it becomes painful for some muscle or something when doing that in long time.. there's not enough power to squeeze.

I just bite the bullet and replaced 4deg backsweep HBars with 12deg BS HB and put grips with palm support. So much more comfort....on another bike with 4deg HBs I left it as is and just replaced grips to flattish and added bar ends for +1 position and no longer suffer from palm stiffness which used to move up by hands towards neck (that one is 90ies MTB with stretched geo but for several reasons I like riding it a lot). That straight HBs are great with flat grips and bar ends, but hell no with round grips...

Always the culprit is the SADDLE!!! Try looking for a bike shop or fitter that have a demo or tester saddle. Each saddle has a different behavior but there's one particular that suits you the best.

I'm a roadie and a mountain bike rider and one of the reasons MTB levers are set more horizontal is to encourage riders to push through rough terrain by dropping their wrists slightly. The 45 degree angle is OK for XC but Downhill and Enduro I would always have my brake levers more horizontal. Great advice on the road bike and as always some riders suit different styles.

Nice video. And you're right about sit bone position and saddle adjustments, I never realized that's so important. I found the wrong setting you mentioned by accident, or tilting the seat too down in the front, my arms and shoulders ached after every ride. So I changed it back level, and much better. Like you, my seat has a very slight tilt that feels good to me. And this after initially thinking my seat was bad and I should get another. Now it feels great when I ride! I primarily ride MTBs so I'll try the brake lever settings you mentioned, mine are a little downward but probably not down far enough. Between watching your vids and doing some occasional reading on the subject, I'm getting a much better understanding of better body positioning on the bike. And slowly my pains and numbness are going away and I'm able to ride longer. So thanks!

Some great tips. Unfortunately there will still be lots of riders that have challenges with numbness, especially riders that are heavier in the torso, even if they're not fat - for men especially with our center of gravity is in the torso, that weight naturally pushes forward and applies pressure on the handlebars. Guys with lighter/slimmer torsos are less likely to naturally put as much proportionally weight down on the bars/their hands. Some of the general challenge can be mitigated with core strengthening, as can by strengthening one's triceps. Finding the right gloves helps some, as does good padding in the wrap and carbon bars will dampen some vibration.

For the sake of comfortable riding another substantial factor to consider are length of your stem, wide of the handle bar and frame size. Yes, you should try for yourself (trial and error) which components suit you best, key point when you are trying is never use high end components because what matter most is tech spec of component not its material. Another way is you can go to your lbs that have bike fitting tool.

Adjusting the levers angle by rotating the bars is wrong. You end up with the drops of the bars positioned incorrectly. You should instead loosen lever mounting bolt and move levers separately from the bars.

setting the bar too high will also cause you to put ur weight on the carpal, meta carpal of the side of ur hands. u need to find the right height , length so that u are resting on ur thumb muscles with a slight bend in the elbows. try not to change ur stem cos tat will change ur handling. rotate bar downwards and bring ur hoods up.

Imagine a horseback "riding" saddle. Does anyone get inner thigh or ischial tuberosity pain from sitting on - or rather, in - a saddle of that shape? Compare it to the typical bicycle saddle. Whether it's an unpadded narrow 80gr carbon saddle - or an overly padded Dutch / junk bike saddle - the chances are, the bicycle saddle will turn out to be rather uncomfortable, because they're designed so as to have the rider sit on the saddle, rather than in it. The overly padded saddles will cause quite a bit of numbness, in part because the padding hampers the blood circulation, and because such junk is simply not designed with ergonomics in mind. The typical road bike saddle will be uncomfortable because of its lack of padding altogether (usually), its limited give and its shape. There's one company that manufactures bicycle saddles that do feel like horseback saddles (no, it's not Brooks, although some Brooks saddles somewhat resemble horse abuse saddles due to their suspended design (but come with a plethora of their own compromises - from the infamous break-in discomfort to susceptability to cracking to the moral indefensibility of the use of leather in their manufacture. The company I'm taking about - is SMP. Much as I resent them for using leather in some of their designs (i.e., black versions of some of their upholstered models), I should commend them for designing some of the most comfortable bicycle saddles there are. Warning: the ubiquitously available black colour (i.e, leather) versions of their upholstered saddles are stickier, and thus generate more heat, cause discomfort and irritation - than the colour versions of the same model. I have them both, and, while the shape and the padding are exactly the same, the colour versions (which incidentally cost more and are more difficult to come by) feel considerably better than the black ones. It is a shame that in this day and age, when every other manufacturer has done away with leather - and uses MicroTex, Lorica and many other quality microfibres in their designs, SMP, who happen to manufacture the most comfortable cycle saddles, still resort to use of leather in some of their products. And charge extra for the microfibre versions of the same saddle.

26 hours non-stop riding, and no pain, no numbness? I can't believe something like this is possible.. For a minority, the sit bones are exactly where NOT to sit, and to heck with what the bike fitters say. I'm thinking of trying an Infinity saddle, and failing that, a Brooks in the hope that it will eventually deform into a cradle for them. However, my instinct is that the Infinity is the best hope. It might also remove the tendency to push oneself backwards to find a better spot, which puts pressure on the hands and arms. Pity it costs such an absurd amount.

@Ridcul I'm close to becoming a bike-fitting expert myself, after readying and watching dozens of guides from real world pros, in a hope to find out a solution for my problems :) Unfortunately, I'm living in a poor back-water country and we literally have just two bike fitting specialists in our capital - both are kind of average in what they do. There won't be a Steve Hogg for you anywhere close, if you happened to have a non-standard physique, you are on your own. They'll take your money, will try some general approaches, will see they can't solve the case in a couple visits - then will lose interest and will put you on ice. Or will just be feeding you some ideas from the top of their head, without really trying to diagnose your case.

Do you have tips for riders who get painful shoulders and arms on the flat bar bike? I'm a Junior Racer and can't get comfy with my hybrid bike that I'm supposed to use for training. My set-up on the hybrid bike is a size small frame, 80mm -17 stem with a 20mm spacer underneath. I'm 161 cm and ride a 69(yes, on the dot) cm saddle height. On my road bike I have no issues, I ride a 2015 Cannondale CAAD Synapse size 48 with the same saddle height and a slammed 120mm stem. Do you think I should lower the stem of the hybrid? The steerer tube of the hybrid is uncut Carbon so I'm a little restricted.

One thing I'd like to ask, have you or someone you know experienced leg pain or numbness in one leg or the other that was due to bad bike setting or body positioning? I have a bad lower back, so I'm asking in case it's more than just that. But sometimes when I ride my left leg primarily will get angry with me and sometimes my left foot/toes getting a little numbness along with some pain in left hip. Only time I've ever gotten anything on my right leg is with my right foot sometimes doing similar to the left. I've used the 0.883 settings you mention in another video and that really helped but sometimes I still get the leg issue although it's less frequent and tends to happen on longer rides especially when riding more/longer distances before having to stop for traffic or otherwise needing a stop.
@davidwinston1627
@davidwinston1627 3 жыл бұрын
If one leg is complaining you might want to check your seat height. For example if the saddle is too high then one leg (usually your dominant leg) will try to over-compensate. Over time this can lead to leg pain, etc. Try lowering your saddle 3mm at a time to see if it feels any better.

my main gripe with long rides is that it is sooooo mind numbingly boring, I'd rather do 20 to 30 km very intense rides with lots of steep climbs and sprinting.

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.
