I got into cycling in the winter lockdown, managed to do 25ish km a day for 2 and a half months (aside from a couple of snowy days where it became dangerous), its really fun and great for mental health especially in lockdown, would definitely recommend for anyone! The one thing i would say to everyone starting this challange: There was not a single time, not one, that i felt worse after a cycle than before, I alwase felt better afterwards.

I did this and I loved it. I live in AZ where one is stuck indoors cause of the heat but the weather finally cooled in the mornings so grabbed my 10 yr old bike and started with 10 miles and now I’ve been doing 15 on average for over a month. Took a day off yesterday cause my quad was hurting but I found that I got more into it every day I’ve done it. I try to create a new challenge every day whether it is going faster, finding more uphills, going longer and that helps keep me focused and motivated
@Swiftfilmsuk3 жыл бұрын
I can imagine how hard it must be to do this in a place as hot as Arizona! It's a great challenge to do and like you, I always enjoyed creating my own mini challenge each day, whether that is attacking the hills harder or going faster on the flat. It definitely helps keep it more interesting. Very best of luck to you!

It is great to take on a challenge like this, but before anyone does, just be reminded that riding every single day for an extended period is not sustainable, and will cause more damage in the long run. Do it for a month, have that victory, but be careful of trying to do this for too long. You will benefit more if you work in 2-3 rest days per week, and make the challenge even longer. An example would be to aim at 400-500km per month for three to four months, while incorporating 2-3 rest days per week, where you make the rest days part of the discipline. Great video! Are you still cycling today, or did you stop after the challenge?
@Swiftfilmsuk3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is a really good point. It is certainly advisable to have rest days in there or you can do more harm than good. I was interested in the challenge of trying to incorporate a new habit every day, rather than the fitness side of things. I would definitely have stopped if I had been worried about injury or doing myself harm. As such, the majority of my rides were done at a pretty gentle pace. I do still cycle now and I think I have discovered a new found love for it because of this challenge. Thanks again!

I recently got a stationary spinning bike after gaining so much weight with quarantine. I tried to go the gym and even got a PT (went to the gym whenever it was possible and we weren’t social distancing) I was only able to lose around 3 kilos. I wasn’t happy though. I’ve always wanted to try biking but with the current conditions I thought of training at home first and see if I would be able to stick to it or not. It is now my 12th day on the bike and I am so happy with the small improvements in my stamina and the quality of my sleep. My dream is to cycle from Seoul to Busan which is around 600KM. I saw this video and I loved how honest you were. Thank you so much. I’m excited to see if I can stick with this habit and to see the effects of discipline on different aspects of my life.

Loved this video. I love how you shot your bike rides. What camera and handle did you use really interested.
@Swiftfilmsuk2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! For most of the rides I was shooting with two Go Pro cameras. One of them (a Go Pro 5, I think) was usually mounted to the bike in some way - either by the front wheel or on the handlebar pointing forwards or up at my face. The other Go Pro camera which I used to talk to (Go pro 7 with external mic attached) I played around with. To begin with I had this protruding from the top of my helmet onto my face, but this obscured my vision a bit and compressed my face 😂. I ended up putting it on a long pole and this enabled me to move it around into different positions and get a variety of angles. When I talked to the camera I simply held it up with one hand and spoke into it. There was lots of trial and error but this was definitely the most flexible way to get a good variety of shots. Thanks again!

Those feet look swollen at the beginning. I was off work after bruising it almost crushing it between a pallet truck and another pallet behind me, but thankfully didn't swell - just painful to walk on and probably a few bruises will show up. I'm the opposite of you though, I prefer cycling to running, though someone going from 2 legs to 2 wheels is probably less of a fitness challenge than going from 4 wheels and an internal combustion engine to 2 wheels without one.

Sounds like a painful injury. I hope you make / made a quick recovery. I have been injured for much of this year so running has had to take a back seat and I’ve been out on my bike again a lot more. Looking forward to running again!

@@Swiftfilmsuk yeah it ached to walk on. I could ride a bike as long as I wasn't forcing hard and driving is alright as I don't have to push hard on any of the pedals unless I lost powered braking and needed to emergency stop. Climbing stairs was annoying and running would have really set it off. Thankfully by Saturday it is starting to get better and hopefully by Monday afternoon I will be ready for work again. Luckily the truck stopped in time not to fold my foot or break anything - just trapped it with maybe 6-7 inches from toe to heel. I could see the shoe buckle, although my foot is quite a bit shorter than the shoe. I have bruising around the back sides of the heel from when the foot was shoved into the back of the heel and probably some from excessive bending of the foot arch and toe joints.

I love cycling too! I just don't do enough of it. I always default to running given the choice. Cycling always seems like my back up choice when I'm injured or need a break from running. Every time I do it, I'm reminded of how much I enjoy it! As you say, it's an amazing way to burn calories.

Trivia, Lucas Valley as in George Lucas lives in Marin California, not far from Lucas Valley. Pronounced Mar rin. Something that was marred, and rin as in r plus inn. (no one cares if you mispronouce it, just being helpful?) cheers! other trivia MTB's were invented in Marin County on Mt.Tamalpais. All this just means: great video, and job! I admire people making these personal challenges and making videos.

Ah, thank you very much for this. Interesting bit of trivia. I knew that Marin was in California but I didn't know how to pronounce it. Nor did I know about the George Lucas thing either. Thank you for that! 🙂

@@Swiftfilmsuk Edinburgh people.. are the best. Haha! And Lucas Valley which is beautiful, is not named after George Lucas, he just settle there and built Skywalker Ranch after his phenomenal success. Wanting to cycle Scottland some day. I'll follow you on strava if you're there.

I have to disagree about Edinburgh being the best in Scotland, Wester Ross beats it hands down for scenery, so does Argyll. The only downside is the Midges!!! I do agree that starting the ride is the hardest part, Every single time, But I'm always glad that I did and as someone else commented: "There was not a single time, not one, that I felt worse after a cycle ride than before, I always felt better afterwards." Tired sometimes but better.
@Swiftfilmsuk Жыл бұрын
Ah, yes, I can't argue with you there. Wester Ross is incredibly beautiful. I think I got carried away in the video. But for a capital city, Edinburgh isn't too shabby! Thanks again 🙂
