When it comes to records, I'm sure they want to standardize the way it is done. There will always be someone who figures out a way to bend the rules in order to gain an advantage. So they probably want this record to be challenged by the fitness of the athlete as opposed to the improved technology of the bike itself.

Sounds like they didn't exactly "ban a position", just set rules on what shape the bike itself should be for the record. You obviously have to figure out some kind of standard rules on what the bike should be like for a record to make any sense.

There is definitely something to say about the fastest human powered land vehicle. Not only for the top speeds, but recumbent bikes are so much more efficient that they are very good commuter vehicles.
@DirtyCiv7 ай бұрын
@@xmtxx the problem with recumbent bikes is that they're not very marketable and very niche(and imo just look a bit silly). road bikes, gravel bikes and mountain bikes are popular because they all share the same or a similar riding position. they are what people know and love as true bicycles that can do time trials, hill climb races, tour de france style stage races, races on gravel or cobbles, crit racing, etc. it's much more exciting to see people get out of the saddle and put down 1000-1200 watts in a big attack off the front, and watch people immediately try to respond in kind. you can get more riders in a race to form a proper peloton, and watching them sprint at 1700-2000 watts at the finish is just a different level of excitement.

In context, elite runners can run a half marathon (21.1 km) in around 60 mins. Cyclists are covering more than 2.5 times that distance. Humans have reached their physical limits in both the disciplines. But there has to be more potential for improvement in cycling, given the two wheels and the engineering involved (versus the bareness of running)

@@bngr_bngr I'm going to use a high VO2 max (as described in the video) as a value that would be 'favorable' to have for being capable to run a marathon well. There is no evolutionary pressure on people with average vo2 maxes so you wouldn't expect the genes of people with a high vo2 max in the human population to become more common. It's a misconception that evolution improves a population in a way that it makes things 'stronger'. The thing that should be examined is the amount of viable offspring carrying whatever genes that by chance managed to proliferate the most.

Considering the total power is conceptually wrong because a different person has a different cross section and different mass. If a person weights 100kg and another weights 50kg, outputting 440W each would result in two different regimes. If you normalize the power output with the drag force of each athlete THEN you can make a comparison and find out what's the power you need to target.

Incidentally when Eddy Merckx went to Mexico city in 1972 and broke the hour record it was at an altitude of 7000 feet, so obviously his advisers knew there'd be less air resistance in the thinner air, but I can't help wondering if a downside was that there was less oxygen in the air.

I don't think he's a non-cyclist, just amateur like the rest of us. I'm about 100kg (fairly lean, though not super) and can put out that much power for a few minutes when in good shape. Used to do trainer sessions of an hour with alternating 350w for 15 mins and 450w for 2-3 mins, with a short break between sets and a run at the end. My average speed in race (triathlon) was a bit over 40km/h for 20km, and I time trialled at a tad under 40km/h for 40km. Have yet to do ftp specific training, I think this will be the year.

How does a amater with no team backing have a go at the 1 hour record ? I'm training for it at 36 yo. I'm dedicated completely. I've quit alcohol , I have no social life, no girlfriend, few friends, I'm dedicated mind body, soul. I think I'm making around 432 watts for 20 minute effort. I not to sure how accurate my power Meter is but figure as long as numbers keep climbing that doesn't matter. I am gaining give or take 10 watts per month. I'm currently 85 kg 6ft 3 height. How on earth Bradley Wiggins made 69 kg at 6ft 3 is beyond me. I'm taking a different approach . I'm riding on feel and I've noticed. I'm not losing weight but I constantly am feeling new muscles growing so I'm thinking I'm designed for around 85 kg to 90 kg strong fit weight. I'm not training for hill climbs . I'm training exclusively for the 1 hour. So I'm thinking outright power for 1 hour means more value then watts per kilo to me. Any feedback on how to put my self in line for a shot at the world record would be much appreciated Cheers

I really don’t know about athletes but I never knew my real limit until my many different trainings as an infantry officer. And then you realize you ain’t terminator. But ironically you don’t get to do what you thought would be easy, you do less. But you still manage to impress yourself. I wonder if it would be easier with a heavier bike. Of course, that wouldn't make any sense at first, but heavier means more stability, which would allow the cyclist to focus more on pushing and less on balance. (balance might not matter initially, but with more fatigue, balance gets harder and consumes more energy). Once the bicycle is up to speed, then the bike shouldn't lose energy on that smooth indoor track the way it would on the road, so although it would take more energy to get up to speed, the energy it takes to maintain the same speed should actually just be the same (assuming equal friction),, and perhaps if the bicycle is more stable, then balance would actually consume LESS energy (fewer wobbles), meaning more energy available for pushing forward.

That's not a record legal bicycle.
@driewiel5 жыл бұрын
@@Laerei For the UCI it isn't. For the HPV world it is. It depends on who is making the rules. There is no world wide law that says you can't put a faring on your bicycle. Of course you need a bell if you want it street legal. So perhaps for records a nice carbon aero bell? .

Hey, now you've done road biking I think you should cover mountain biking. It's a fantastic sport that more people need to know about. Try talking about how it's impossible to get down literally any of the downhill tracks at the speed the pros are doing

That's less about endurance and more about skill/risk of broken bones though I would have thought. I mean, I love getting out in the forest as much as the next guy, but downhill racing just looks like broken bones waiting to happen.

This dude is way too fit to host this series. They need someone who's average or below average to show just how hard this stuff really is.

He is quite fit which means he actually has a shoot at doing ok. It makes no sense to put a 55 year old couch potato that hasn't really exercise for 25 years through all of this. Not that I wouldn't love it just to see exactly how bad I am.

@@apair4002 Meanwhile the profesisonal e-sporters have daily gym routines to be able to operate at peak efficiency during their games. Being physically fit is actually an advantage when spending meny hours training in the game. But I see your point.

The pain cave exists for runners too :) Also interesting that runners are also starting to use “power” as a measure/output.

How do they record it?
@purpleblueunicorn Жыл бұрын
Using an accelerometer device on the hips or heart rate strap. Records in the watch just like heart rate and other metrics. I've got one, but it's not useful and accurate like a bike power meter I find.

the non-UCI record holder is Francesco Russo, 92.4 km, so it isn't impossible, just burn UCI rulebook, use fairings and recumbent position

100% you don't know what is power in cycling. Can Francesco Russo produce 440watt in one hour? If he can't, obviously he can't beat 60km/h mark in velodrom on those time trial bike.
