Dexcool is a OAT (Orange), you can mix OATs but not IAT (Green) coolents. When you mix OAT with IAT it turns brown and thickens up into a gel that the pump can not move. Back in the 90's GM had head gaskets blow because people mixed the IAT with the new OAT. Universal coolent (yellow) is just a OAT that can be used in all motors that use OAT, but not IAT. If you mixed up say, Toyota OAT (Blue) with GM OAT (Orange) nothing bad will happen, only a color change. It's like mixing gas from different stations. Gas is gas, it's only the additive package that changes. EVERY gas station gets it gas from the same spot in the area! The diffrence is when they pump it into the tanker, the driver pours in the additive package for that station, IE: Shell, Chevron, Mobil, Esso, etc...

I have a recycling center very close to where I live and they told me NOT to pour the coolant in the toilet because the coolant doesn't get filtered and it ends up in the water system, at the end. They also said many people do that but they shouldn't. I just need to bring a used-coolant tank to them and they will do it, for free. That's why I don't do that and it doesn't sound a good idea otherwise the garages would just pour it in the toilet as well.

Great video thanks a lot! One question, do you know where the coolant bleed valve/plug is on the Diesel CDI engine? I did a cooling flush on my 2009 ForTwo CDI but could not find the bleed point location that I know should be near the cylinder head to bleed the air out of the tubing. Now the car is overheating with the water not circulating and I guess full of air pockets everywhere. I've searched all over the Internet and the all the information available is only for the gasoline engine not the diesel. Thank you very much😊😊😊

Cyd great video, Thanks. Does unused coolant have a shelf life. Bye Heck coudnt get that drain undone, Next to the water pump. Thanks.
@CycloneCyd2 жыл бұрын
As long as it remains sealed and stored in a 'cool' place and out of the sun, I think most makers quote a 5 year shelf life. I've used coolant well over 10 years old before with no apparent ill effects, but in this instance I would add a bottle of water wetter to the coolant mix to bolster the anti-corrosion package. amzn.to/3IIbAe6

Hi Cylone cyd, Thanks for your clear explanation. The copper washer around the coolant drain plug is the same size as the oil ring? So it seems and that is also socket wrench size 14. How many Nm should the ring be tightened? And the pipes you took out of the block, for the heating matrix, are those the two narrower ones on the block at the group of four pipes on the C1, 107 and the Aygo? Thanks in advance
@CycloneCyd2 жыл бұрын
Not certain of the exact spec, but at least 30Nm. I did mine F tight! The hoses are easily visible, follow them back from the heater to the block, but I think so, yes.

Good information, two thumbs up. Your technique is better than mine. My technique is to drain from the radiator when cold, fill with distilled water, run the engine until thermostat opens and top off with more distilled water, replace cap, drive car. Repeat Around 5 to 6 times, over the week. When the drained fluid finally becomes clear, fill with fresh coolant of the correct type. Think I might watch some more of your videos now I stumbled upon this one, 👍 Edit: only do my lazy technique when there is no chance of freezing temperatures.

Do I need coolant which Toyota approved? I have heard that it could cause water pump failure, if you use coolant which is not Toyota approved.
@CycloneCyd2 жыл бұрын
They would say that, they want to sell you "their"* coolant at inflated prices. Buy a reputable brand and flush thoroughly and you'll have no problems. * - OEMs don't make their own coolant, nor oils. They buy from the large refiners and package it as their own. And then put the scarers on you with stories of failures because you didn't use their brand.

@matraz10 Жыл бұрын
Good video. Gave it a thumbs up. Although your belief of the three types of coolant is wrong. There's IAT (inorganic acid technology) the green old school stuff. OAT "Dex-Cool" (organic acid technology) all kinds of colors and the normal stuff now-a-days. Then there's HOAT (hybrid organic acid technology) in some newer vehicles, yellow or orange. Dex-Cool is an OAT coolant and the first OAT coolant. The only difference between Dex-Cool and all other OAT coolants is a copywrite name. The biggest issue with OAT coolants is getting air into the system, so all of your warnings about Dex-cool coolant applies to your engine, air and heat plus OAT coolant can cause fast corrosion of metals inside the engine and a thick mucky residue. So it's best to pull a vacuum on OAT coolant systems when filling them with a venturi device and an air compressor. Only way to be sure there's no air pockets in the system after refilling. Because all the troubles of Dexcool are troubles with all OAT coolants, mainly being air in the system. Gaskets and o-rings aren't really an issue any longer, as long as the right kind are used. This might've been mentioned elsewhere in the comments, I didn't read them all.
