Really helpful video, once I had figured out disassembling my centre console, this video helped me clean up the contacts and now my steering lock malfunction has gone and the car starts and stops as it should. Had to substitute Bison Grass vodka for isopropyl alcohol because it's Sunday and I don't have the latter in my drinks cabinet. Thanks a million, saved me a fortune.

Very helpful! I followed your instructions and the repair worked. The contact points had a few burn marks, like yours did. They cleaned right up. I imagine this repair saved me close to $1000 if I had taken to a shop. I spent $2.50 to buy dielectric grease at Autozone and a couple hours of my time.

Thank you for the instructional video it is excellent!! You sir have saved me time and money before and looks like you will again if i have enough skill that I can follow your instruction and defeat my interlock solenoid tomorrow evening after work. Stopping to get wooden coffee sticks before work. Lol The cause of my key being unable to turn it comes in and out but is locked in the off position wont turn due to a low battery is what I've determined. Battery went dead on my son, tow truck driver didnt charge the battery long enough , it started it then it stalled and locked the key or possibly after it locked he dragged the car onto a flatbed without turning the key? Doesn't matter to me as long as I can repair it. Its a 2003 9-3 2.0t arc , US model. Only 69k miles..then hail hit but she runs well. May God Bless you SaabFather Cyd you help a lot of people.

Perfectly done. The previous owner of my car clearly abused it, I made one good switch from two and it has been good for 40,000 miles since. Have seen others spray WD40 or put vaseline in these - don't. Use silicone as Cyd shows you here 👌

This was an awesome detailed video. I’m getting the intermittent steering wheel lock warning randomly. If I take the key back out it almost always starts up. I’m thinking this ignition switch is the culprit. I’m going to try cleaning it instead of replacing it and see what happens. This was a bad design imo. Bad place to put an ignition switch.

The white part would probably benefit from the US cleaner. I didn't think of that, but my US cleaner is only just big enough to fit 2x fuel injectors. Do let us know how you get on with it.

Great video - this was a huge help for me. One warning - DON"T USE BRAKE CLEANER on the white plastic - it caused my white plastic to disintegrate and chunk off. I had been handling it without issue for the 30 min while I was cleaning it, and as soon as I sprayed a small amount of brake cleaner, I had four while plastic chunks break off. Would suggest skipping this step!

I tired this and now know that this was not my problem but I started at the ICM. If you really pull the console up, and on RHD models the switch comes out onto the LHS and is easy to disconnect 🙂 My problem was the ABS module that when the car is hot does not restart. try "SAAB 9-3 ABS module repair Fixed DTC U0212" on youtube also on a V6 2008 you can pull R8 relay in the engine fuse box and wire 30 and 87 to start the car as long as you can get the ignition on!

Thank you for a the instruction video, very good. I followed the steps since the SID showed Steering lock malfunc. on my 2008 model 9-3, but same message came when I replaced it and tried in the car. Tried the reset function with fuse 1 and 2 without any luck. The sollinoid doesn't work when I put in the key, so I moved the spring so I could move the key. I did that, and tried to start the enginee but the starter didn't respond, only off and on was "normal" if I can say so. I had expeced that I could start the engineen since I "bypassed" the keylocker, so what is the faul? The ISM ?

Got to the test phase. Key turns with stick holding back the plunger, but not when reconnected to the wires in the car. Can I just grind off the plunger so it can’t lock up the switch? Is the only thing I’ll lose the anti-theft feature?

I purposely overpaid a junkyard to get an ISM as it was a 03 car thinking I’d have leds…. Unfortunately the ISM was replaced at some stage so I’m still on the hunt! So led video would be great!

I have an 06 Saab 9-3 1.8t convertible that will crank but not start. It was running fine up until Christmas but then stood for 2 weeks unused, when I tried to start it, it would crank but not start. I have had the AA out to it who said it was the fuel pump, so I changed the fuel pump to no avail. I changed the CPS, also no luck. An electric diagnostic said there was a constant “Alarm not leant” fault and an intermittent “Main relay” error. The car will start with Easy Start sprayed in to the intake, it also started with a direct feed from the battery to the fuel pump. All fuses and relays have been checked. It was running absolutely fine until it refused to start. Can you suggest what it might be? Thanks

I have a question for you. My 04 9-3 have this immobilizer fault message on my SID every time I start the car. It has not given me any big issues yet, but it's annoying. Is there anything I can do at home to try to fix this, or do I need a tech2 scanner to delete the fault code? I was hoping there was something I could try at home first, before I pay a Saab techician over £100 to just delete the message, if there is a reason why this message comes up every time I start the car.

I applied some DeOxit 100 to the pads and brushes for extra cleaning. Mine had some good corrosion on one pad. I put off cleaning the ISM for awhile, but the occasional SCL error, become regular errors. Regular errors turned into multiple turns of key to start, loss of cruise control, and even non-functional turn signals. Its only been a couple days since cleaning, but everything is back to normal. Now its the occasional drip of oil and coolant which I've attempted to fix twice and simply live with now. If anyone has suggestions to address a 2.8T passenger side coolant leak down the side of the block let me know. Ive already replaced the water pump and gasket which addressed most of it, but I still get a drip every other day.

Pull the fuse or remove the negative battery cable , some ppl install a toggle switch to the steering wheel lock fuse port and bypass the problem. I’ve seen another install a push start button to the starter relay and grounded it at the battery. Turn the ignition switch on and press the start button. All those ppl seems their car isn’t starting at all. Mines still starts just acts up and this warning light comes on randomly even sometimes clears itself. This steering lock issue seems to be common on Saabs.I was going to replace the iG switch but after watching this video , I think I will try cleaning it first and see what happens.

Ah, the mechanism in the CIM gets sticky. Spray some contact cleaner into where the stalk fits to the CIM and operate the stalk. Allow to dry. That may free it up. If it doesn't you'll have to remove the CIM and take it apart. I'll be doing that later in the year when I can get hold of a cheap CIM to use

Im on my third ISM. SAAB used to have unit for sale, then my second time only offer the kit for sale. I need to use the shell. I was trying to do the cleaning before replace the new parts. It won't work. I guess you need to take it out to clean every couple years. I have replaced it two times and one CIM in 10 years

You seem to have had some bad luck. My ISM in the car is still original after 15 years. I've had the car 12 years though, so know it's never had food or drink spilled on it.

Yeah, I was expecting microswitches. I haven't got as far as removing mine from the car yet (the one in the video is a spare), but I'll look into it when I do.

Power To Rear Lights -Accesory Key position Hi I have an automatic US 2007 SAAB 2.8L Turbo Sedan #1 I am having an issue when the key is turned to on (accessory) the rear tail/stop/plate lights come on (all front lights stay off ) I have replaced all bulbs (new OSRAM P21W and PY21W for sides) and never get blown fuses (no burns on rear connectors or sockets) With car off and key out and I press the brake pedal, brake lights and 3rd brake light works as should (telling me brake switch is fine) Reverse lights/rear fogs/interior and all of the front of the car lights all work as intended Thus being said any idea when the key is turned to (accessory) voltage is being applyied to the rear tail/stop/plate lights? (third brake light stays off) Turn bulbs stay off unless used and dont seem to be of the same issue being on the same cluster #2 BTW with key in pocket and headlight switch turned to on are all front/rear lights supposed to come on? Any thoughts appreciated Thanks Much!!!!!

Hello, I am contacting you from Japan. I am the owner of a Saab 9-3 2.0T (2006). Actually, I have a problem with the car I own, and I have done a lot of research and asked people in the know, but I can't find the cause, and I thought you might have a clue, so I would like to ask you. Symptom: At low rpm, the engine may suddenly stop. Sometimes it happens when idling or while driving at a constant speed. The frequency is random so it is hard to say, but it is about once every 50 km (30 miles). Initially, I thought the ignition switch was suspect and replaced this with a new one last month, but there has been no improvement. I have tested it with a tester and there seems to be nothing wrong with the engine, but rarely the engine check light comes on (it disappears after a while). The following is what the purveyor indicated, although there are so many I don't know where to start, Deterioration of battery performance Loose battery terminals Spark plugs Ignition coil Air intake from vacuum piping Cell motors Loose terminals on the cell motor itself Relays related to the cell motor Crank angle sensor Engine computer main unit Grounding of the engine computer Gear position sensor From your experience, do you know where to start? I would appreciate it if you could let me know.

Was it really plug and play tho? I have seen a similar video where the creator insist that there is no need for tech2. However alot of people in the comment section seems to have a problem with it either way.

Removing the switch is common sense. If you can’t remove the switch yourself , you shouldn’t be taking apart the switch to try this.

It does seem somewhat over complex, doesn't it. A traditional column mounted ignition barrel is a simple key barrel with switches after all.

I wouldn’t use brake cleaner, brake cleaner could actually craze the plastic. I would use electronic cleaner spray.
