these boys are absolute machines .this is a TEAM effort . Amazing . Go ETNZ

I guess I knew these boats were physically demanding, but I didn't realize they were this physically demanding. Thank you for shining some light into the unsung heroes in the "engine room"

I have a question has this concept been used or tried before in the history of yatching regarding Cyclor?

I don't think so, before or since. Not that I know of. Heard the system was banned after that AC.

Ouch... The boats for the next Americas cup should have more sailors so you don't get this crazy energy shortage. Would make the racing less about brute strength.

They forgot to mention the “real dark place “ is then they push themselves so hard and they “crap themselves “ and the residue is left behind on the “bicycle seat” fir the “shore team” to clean up..

looks like they could do with lower geearing higher cadence?

Must be a hard choice, blow out heart or blow the legs with lactic, both are pretty shitty choices on a long day. I'll get out my sun chair.

newbie question: how does this cycling mechanism work?
@nstrug7 жыл бұрын
Adam Yixiao Wang all the foils, rudder, sails etc are adjusted using hydraulic actuators. Due to the speed that the boats are going, these require a large amount of power to actuate. The cyclists power a hydraulic pump for this purpose. Traditionally they used arm cranks to power the pump, however legs are a lot more powerful than arms, which allows for quicker adjustments. It also saves the crews arms for other work.

is there a pump on both sides of the boat?
@nstrug7 жыл бұрын
MARK BROOMER yes there are two pumps.

Why not use a machine or hydraulic pump or something? is it for weight, or the boats arent allowed machien?
@nstrug7 жыл бұрын
mikeee6 not sure I understand. They do have hydraulic pumps, that is what the cyclists are powering. They're obviously not allowed anything operated by a motor!

Foiling sailboats are cool, but cycling on a boat to keep up the hydraulic pressure hardly seems like sailing. I'll stick with my Hobie Wave, Laser, and V15.

I am pretty ambivalent about all of this. I think the event sold it’s soul to the devil for money by way of the spectacle of speed. Sure it’s a developmnet class but the giant J-boats must have been beautiful. The beginning of the end was the winged keel boat allowed to race as a “12 meter” boat. Though it technically met the specs, it had no chance of losing. Next came the “payback” in form of a catamaran that totally crushed the competition. First straight manpower, then came winches (logical enough), but now blinded cyclists running hydraulic pumps?? Though a hell of an innovation. It’s all crazy now. I BET 80% OF CURRENT SPECTATORS HAVE ZERO UNDERSTANDING OF SAILING.

They should have made rowing machines instead of bikes, more power delivered

Simon was the wrong man for that job...stuck in the mud thinking cyclist...they should have got a bike builder/designer...the Recumbent cycling position would have been much more effective & much better mechanical fit within the design of a hull and a LOT more secure for the peddler seated "in" the hull...quicker, easier to enter & exit & more secure position to peddle...the std cycling configuration was really shortsighted & dangerous entering & exiting & clipping in. Just tacky & awkward.
