I'm honestly so annoyed with all the fans and teams complaining about ferarri making the most of loopholes and operating in the grey area but when Mercedes fits the DAS system which also uses a loophole and operates in a grey area, all the teams praise them. Honestly with how it's going, it seems like If you are going to innovate then do it in the open as opposed to not talk about it. 😕
@Wriwnas14 жыл бұрын
To my understanding, all teams operate in gray areas, until FIA decides that this and that (innovations that FIA had not even thought of before), it IS or it IS NOT legal and teams that were using it, have to adjust, typically with no fine whatsoever (fair I guess, since it was not really forbiden yet).
@ssifr33314 жыл бұрын
Well, you know what DAS do, but what did ferrari do? All just speculations because FIA refuses to disclose their findings. If what ferrari did was illegal in 2019 rulings other teams can sue either ferrari or FIA for reimbursements. Also, DAS doesn't violate any current rules AFAIK, I mean if it violates any rule other teams would have fumed.

Well said. Im tired of watching fan boys running this thing to the ground from thier opinions. Im a mclaren fan and personally i think I side with Ferrari on this one. Nothing about technicalities but just entertainment as a viewer. Merc and redbull shit themselves because ferrari was 12kmh faster on the straight... meanwhile both are 10kmh faster in the turns. If the Fia say there was no cheating, that just means they came up with something thats new, or just skirts on the rules. LIKE EVERY TEAM IN HISTORY HAS DONE AT SOME POINT OR A OTHER. Clubbing down a team that had a shit year, came last out of the top tier teams which its supposed to compete in, does not exactly yell "CHEATING". I actually enjoyed thier "rule skirting" because the only races worth watching in 2019 where the ones that ferrari had the straight line speed, and red bull and merc had cornering. Before that or after they had to suspend thied "tech" it was a boring ass grand prix of lewis walking away and max trying to hold on. Stop focusing on what others might be doing wrong, but on what others are doing better. Lets go Sainz and Lando 2020...
@damiank93114 жыл бұрын
After re-reading it, I just want to clarify. If a team is under-performing, it is not ok to cheat just to make it more intresting. Simply that if a team is not able to match with its rivals, its almost expected of them to lush whatever enevlope they can to try and claw thier way back. New tech, borderline tech, unheard of tech, or modified tech that falls in a gray zone shows they are willing to fight back however they can.
@broyout35864 жыл бұрын
Great comment. You almost had me convinced that it's ok for an under-performing team to start cheating :-) . The point is of course, that *anything* to make it more interesting is a plus in my book, and assumedly yours. I'd have much more sympathy for the underdogs though, if they were cheating to gain an advantage, instead of Ferrari. Creative interpretation of the rules is one thing, circumventing measuring devices specifically installed to check whether you stay within the rules is quite another. I too hope that Lando and Carlos can continue their progress in the coming season! And that we can see more video footage of Carlos during the race...
@nfsrival14994 жыл бұрын
Damian K Last if top tier teams? 2nd is last of the 3? What? Ferrari had a shit year, and although we dont know the cause(ses), it is pretty clear they are to blame for that. Same as Honda with McLaren (McL might have added fuel to the flames tho) but they get their shit together and admut they where ‘wrong’. Something I personally not see Ferrari doing, ever. Not to hate, hope the 3 top teams are very close, and have some controversies again this year. Maybe even Renault having a podium for grabs :)
@damiank93114 жыл бұрын
Formula racing: I just meant that out of the top tier teams (ferrari, merc, RB) they came last. I would be the first to say that Ferrari should own up to having a vargabe year, just like last year, with a large percent of thier mistakes coming from strategy and managment calls. But they are too proud to do so, and never will. But just on the topic of fuel flow and controversy and politics and blah blah blah, if the Fia said its "not illegal" that I side with this video and ferrari in saying great, move on and drop it. Fia says they put more securities in place and are working with Ferrari to prevent further "gray areas". Its done and over. Look towards 2020. Everyones all hot and bothered about an old verdict that wasnt even a good verdict. If its shady moving forward then I agree to launch investigations, but other teams "demanding information" i feel just makes the sport look bad. Dragging this through litigation, does the opposite of attract more viewers with good racing.
@allenbrown32144 жыл бұрын
As an amateur racer myself...My whole job is to read the rules , and read them again as many times as possible to see if there is any ways that I can use to my benefit. Even with MB bringing forward the DAS. Good on them. Read the rules, understand them, develop for your use. If Ferrari came up with something to tweak out a few extra ponies. Well done!!! You can't tell me every other F1 team is not trying to come up with something that other teams have not (yet).

One team's "technical advantage" is another team's "they're cheating!" ANY team will "cheat" if they can get away with it. That's racing. CYF1 does another great job highlighting the subtleties in this argument.

@twinscrew9284 жыл бұрын
@Rule Britannia2nd Gotta disagree with you on that. If you found a cleaver way to gain an advantage, wouldn't you do it? Yes you would, and if you say you wouldn't then you're not a racer. The fact that F decided to pull back on their advantage once the extra sensor was added, proved they had found a way to gain advantage undetected... [until it was detected]. Keep in mind F1 is NOT spec racing where all the cars a engine are exactly the same. F1 combines driver, car and strategy to gain advantage.
@twinscrew9284 жыл бұрын
@Rule Britannia2nd I would argue F1 needs Ferrari more than Ferrari needs F1. That's a controversial statement, but looking at what's happening behind the closed doors would suggest a very strong game of poker.

@Viki M Doesn't the steering wheel normally do that though? DAS seems to be rotating the wheels along the same axis of rotation as normal steering by using the steering wheel, so it seems to hard for it to be illegal in that regard without all steering via moving the wheels to be illegal movable aero systems. The technical regulations for steering prohibit certain things like electronic systems that could make a DAS type system illegal depending on how it was set up, but would leave room for other executions of the concept that do not break the rule.

Thank you. This has provided more information than any other report I've seen and it was very fascinating. I'm not being flippant here, but have you considered becoming a journalist? Particularly an investigative journalist? I genuinely think you'd be extremely good at it. You've more than shown both your willingness to research and your ability to read the whole story rather than the bits that stick out. Of course, you're also an excellent writer/storyteller, which helps! If you haven't considered this before, please consider looking into it now. I genuinely believe you could become a top journalist in whichever areas pique your interest. As for the saga... "Individual moaning" from one team or person (whether in a team or perhaps, ironically given my last paragraph, a sports journalist - or more likely a hack) has happened since the beginning of racing. When I see the rare sight of every team being prepared to take legal action en masse, however, I pay attention. This doesn't happen as a rule. If anything, it's avoided like the plague. Of course, because of - initially - characters like Enzo Ferrari, whose response to every query about their car or operations was to threaten to go home and take his ball with him, a stance carried on by every director of Ferrari ever since, the Ferrari-FIA relationship has been viewed with a great deal of suspicion (and frankly, there have been many times when that suspicion was warranted). The Ferrari International Assistance "joke" has been around for decades - from long before you or (probably) most of your subs were born, let alone watching F1. And if you look through the history, not just during the Schumacher era, there have been numerous occasions when the fans, if not the other teams, have been left dumbfounded by the actions taken on Ferrari's behalf (or possibly more accurately, which benefitted Ferrari more than anyone else), it's very easy to see why this came about. Ironically, I don't see pulling out of F1 to be of any benefit to Ferrari because it's always been it's biggest, if not only widespread advertising platform. IIRC, they don't advertise, they really do leave it to F1 to do that job for them. So their threats to withdraw from the sport have always seemed hollow to me and I'm sure that I'm not the only one who's ever wanted the FIA to call their bluff. Frankly, I wouldn't miss them, because they usually are in the middle of some mess or other, either as in this case as the "baddies", or just as frequently they complain to the FIA about something and have historically, got their own way more often than not (or perhaps it just seems that way, but in *nearly* every scandal I can think about now - BC - before coffee - they've been involved as some sort of beneficiary by the end of it). Perhaps not as often now as it used to be, but that nickname didn't come from nowhere. But I do see why the powers that be don't want them to go, so I've learned to live with the fact that this sort of crap is going to happen a lot. As I said before, though, the other teams don't usually bother to take a joint stand and threaten legal action against the FIA. This sort of antagonism has usually only been seen before some major bust up between the FIA and runners of F1 (it's only been a corporate entity since the 80s when the Poison Dwarf was - bafflingly - given the green light to run the show by the other teams. Oh, how they learned to regret that decision...) The last time I saw the majority of teams so angry was when Balestre was running FISA. It really takes a *lot* to push them to even agree on a protest, let alone make one. That says to me that there's more to this than sour grapes. They'd have ignored it all otherwise. Probably been p'd off behind the scenes but we wouldn't know much about it. Frankly, I don't blame them. That initial statement, irrespective of how guilty or not it made Ferrari look (and let's be honest, it made them look guilty, particularly when combined with the whole drop in power at the end of last season), was the biggest whitewash job I've seen outside of the current administration in the USA. Why did they say what they said? They could have just said, "we found nothing illegal," and left it at that. They could have released the statement before or after testing, but when everyone was starting to pack up and go home?! That's the sort of thing that governments do when they want to bury bad news. It wasn't just suspicious, it was downright asking for trouble! I have no objections to any team keeping its intellectual property private. I doubt very much that the teams are protesting that specifically. What I have a problem with - and it's not just in this case, this goes waaaay back - is the FIA looking incompetent, again, when it's supposed to be *the* home of motorsport. They employ top engineers, apparently. Hell, they've got the king of how to push the rules to the limit on their side now. And if Ross Brawn doesn't know how Ferrari operates, no one does. So either the FIA are not employing the best engineers - and if not, why not? - or they found something and, IMHO, Ferrari threatened to leave if anything about it was made public. Maybe I'm just too cynical. You get more cynical as you age, but mostly because you've seen so much more to become cynical about. Whatever the case is in this "episode", the FIA have been left looking stupid, but worse, untrustworthy by the majority of teams and probably fans, and Ferrari have yet another scandal attached to their long list of them. Whether they're guilty of breaking the rules or not, the FIA, probably mistakenly, didn't do them any favours in their choice of wording, whether it was legalese or not. It makes them look guilty as hell because the vast majority of us aren't lawyers. But that is, of course, just my humble opinion. (◠‿◕)

Basically, to me it seems like whatever Ferrari was doing, and it WAS doing something, is both so incredibly complicated and legally dubious, or so difficult to prove and legally dubious, that there wasn't much else that the FiA could do but to settle. Like a court case missing a final piece of the puzzle linking the evidence and suspect to the crime scene. Other teams have the right to be angry. If a more in-depth analisys did end up proving cheating, it could have huge implications for the 2019 results, and many millions of dollars going to the wrong teams.
@kogure72354 жыл бұрын
@Christian Slater It's not though? You can't really sentence someone without evidence, no matter what your gut feeling is. There clearly isn't enough there for FiA to label it as cheating, even though they're not too happy with what they found

Ferrari had obviously found some clever gains in 'grey' areas of the regulations (like the dual battery etc) and despite the suspicion from other teams the Fia can't really pinpoint anything wrongdoing. They have obviously seen some clever tech which needs to be protected and not disclosed to others teams and are taking the opertunity to develop some better systems in conjuction with Ferrari so they can police engines from all teams better. If Mercedes find gains in grey areas they are very clever, but if ferrari do it they are 'cheating'! If any team should be under the spotlight it should be Mercedes for the utter domination and advantage they have had for all these years, and the massive head start they got with the 2014 regs in the first place was cheating all the other teams!

Mercedes consulted with the FIA regarding DAS and they were completely fine with it, until every other team saw it and dropped a load in their pants. As much as DAS is a loophole, Mercedes took the effort to try and make it as legal as possible. Ferrari on the other hand kept their little extra power trick a secret for god knows how many years and we still have no idea what it exactly is, that to me seems extremely shady as fuck. Now that we are 2 races into the 2020 season, it was obvious Ferrari were using some sneaky tricks to boost their power considering how abysmal their performance (and to an extent their customer teams) have been this past two weeks (barring the lucky podium for Leclerc).

When the hybrids came out they went from winning 1 grand prix in 2013 to winning 16 races. I saw no investigation that year if i remember right even if Mercedes had over 60 hp over the other teams. @@victorokeahialam8925 No i m saying if Ferrari have 10 to 20 hp over the others then they MUST be cheating but Mercedes with there FRIC suspension, illegal tire test and a engine destroying the field, everything is OK. My opinion is that Ferrari found a grey area in the rules and Mercedes and Red Bull pressured the FIA to investigate but found jack shit(could not prove it). Theses hybrid engines were the reason Mercedes came back into F1 as a team. They were allowed to have this advantage and Ferrari mistake being a TOP engine builder is thinking that Mercedes was playing fair but got hustled. Mercedes without the hybrids would still be a midfield team like from 2010 to 2013.

All the teams do this. Literally every team does this. Hell red bull complained about the new Merc steering. Either they do it cause they can’t compete because of it, such as not enough money, not enough R&D and so on. Or they have a part ready and want to make sure it’s legal.

Standardisation of Formula 1 is BAD! Formula 1 has much of it's appeal in how far ahead it is of other motorsports. As the years go by this advantage diminishes and things get more and more regulated. A limit of Formula 1 spending is GOOD! This means that teams need to be much more innovative. Formula One (F1) needs to start it's rules from scratch, right now the rules are too restrictive, innovation gets killed off, and very little of this technology is making it's way down to production cars which is one of F1's highlight aspects, that link between your every day car and a world class Race Car. A lot of suspicious behaviour is going on at the moment (although this isn't new to F1 or Motorsport in general), and it seems that corruption in Formula 1 is still very much ripe. I've lost almost all interest in Formula 1 now, it's boring, overly restrictive, full of cheats, and costs way too much.

three remarks: 1: Not "guilty"? It was a settlement, so there was something to settle. If Ferrari was completely "legal" there was no need for a settlement. (btw according to several sources its a very expensive settlement for Ferrari, tens of millions worth) 2: Protecting their IP? No if it was a software "solution" it can be material impossible to prove what has happened. Looking at the GPS data ( as the teams did) there was an inexplicable peak in power during certain stages of the race. Proving the cause of this paek can be very hard. Engines are at the top of the technological possibilitys.. a few % is possible, but not the large peakpower Ferrari could deliver. 3: In the regulations it is stated a team should always prove they are legal. Ferrari was obvious unable to prove this and the settlement was the only solution in the eyes of the FIA. ps: it even looks like Ferrari did not complied with the rule that customers get the same equipment. Different software of hardware is not allowed. Except as a free choice when there is an upgrade engine available.
@txixo3214 жыл бұрын
Regarding your point 2: I think the massive advantage on the straits is a really shortsighted view of the overall concept on Ferrari's car. Also, teams just point out to one thing, leaving the other aside, because that doesn't fit the narrative so well. Fact is, Ferrari car was developed on a low aero drag concept, giving it the "massive advantage" on the straits. It wasn't just down to the engine itself, but that's what everyone thinks it boils into. Of course, this low drag concept, came with a cost: Low downforce, resulting in poor cornering performance and lots of lost time compared to the likes of RedBull and Mercedes. In a likewise manner, should we start to be suspicious about RB's and Mercs' advantages on the corners ? No.. its just how each car is built around.
@sethje4 жыл бұрын
@@txixo321 That is only part of the story. And yes, the concept did increased the speed on the straights. But that is not where the increased peak was noticed. It was during accelarating out of the corners. Or remember the first pass by Ver on Lec in Austria. Even with DRS full open and and faster corner VER was no match for the acceleration of the Ferrari out of the corner.

1) You don't know what settlment means. It doesn't imply nor suggest that any of the partys are in the wrong, Ferrari has PU which can't be peoven to be legal nor ilegal, so they made a settlment. So yes the conclusion is that they aren't quilty and that you don't know what a settlment is 2) it's literal IP protection mate, it's entirely possible to deliver that much of % increase legaly and by doing major RnD work (which Ferrari has done)
