For Renault? Yes They need someone with experience to develop the new regs cars. For Alonso? Yes Now he could drive in F1, and have a team that hopefully he can steer to the right direction. For F1? Yes Ain't we all want the greatest driver battling on track? For Ocon? Maybe It's a double edged sword for Ocon, if he match or even beat Fernando, I think Toto would pull him back to Mercedes. But again there's a chance for him to get whitewashed by Alonso.

In the short term (2-3 years) it could be something good if he still as it bring some podiums and deveĺop the car for the next regulation. But on the other hand remember when he leaves a team it was a mess (See the 2 stints in McLaren and Renault also). And as a said before i think the main problem of Renault is Cyril is was too cocky for me (Too many expectations that coming from him) and doesn't make the right choices i was sad that they didn't keep Fred Vasseur cuz i think he was the right men for the job. And juste keep that Renault wasn't sure to stay in F1 in 2024 so we just wait and see. By the way i love the work that you put in keep it up 🙂. Cheers from France

Thank you for making this. There was so much outrage on Twitter when Renault announced they would give Alonso the seat, it was ridiculous. People should remember Jolyon Palmer was a GP2 champion and still drove poorly for Renault, so why should they prioritise younger drivers at all times? Also, a quick reminder that Michael Schumacher at 43 years old, put a slow Mercedes on pole at Monaco in 2012. It was a entertaining and memorable moment which will always be remembered. Moreover, Mercedes wouldn't be in the position there in today if it wasn't for Schumacher and Brawn laying the groundwork. @@CYMotorsport Ilott, Shwartzman, Schumacher, and Armstrong all look so good in F2 this year it's really good for Renault that Zhou and Lundgaard are challenging and beating them on occasion like the Styrian sprint race that Lundgaard won. Agreed, we already seen what kind of disastrous circumstances when teams gambled on 2 young drivers. Just look at Williams after Massa left the team, they're stomped to the ground, since no one can effectively develop the car. Junior driver it's great, but again you need experience and feedback from someone with experience. That's why all companies in the world doesn't replace their old staff with younger ones.

CrankyYankeeF1 that comment defined Honda. It brought them so much shame. Also so many memes. Jeremy took a dig at then in grand tour while comparing nsx to lambo and rimac Rory reed took a dig at them while comparing Honda Civic to other hatchback. It was a Honda PR nightmare. To be honest I think it was Honda fault for not being prepared enough. Even now. Redbull success with Honda was pretty much what redbull achieved with Renault the previous year. And now we see how far back Honda are in 2020 compared to mercedes who have made another step forward. Maybe it was somewhat Mclaren fault too - given how well redbull made it work. But it’s not the same thing. Mclaren got to be the Lab rat to test Honda hybrid. Redbull got a 4 year research and development tech. Even they had luxury of testing in toro rosso first.

Beautifully crafted and extremely well thought out, as I've come to expect from you. I think you made your points very clearly. I am in agreement with you - I've even commented elsewhere (though it was very much more a stream of consciousness thing!) that I think that Alonso is after a bigger prize. Though I hadn't considered the triple crown thing at that time, I'm now wondering if that aim - which I believe is to have a very influential position in Renault, even so far as taking Abominable's position - is a way to gracefully walk away from the Indy 500. As things stand he's not going to get a seat in a car which is likely to win it. Penske & Ganassi would have signed him up in a heartbeat for publicity's sake if they thought it worth the risk, despite Ganassi running a Honda. Andretti is his only other "friend" over there, but not while they're running a Honda. After the disaster with the Chevrolet, Alonso might be too wary to approach Penske, even though they're the best Chevrolet team. He is, according to Wiki, still contracted to the Arrow McLaren Chevrolet team. That could be interesting to see if he's still going to drive for them. I looked at the reports of the first two races on there, he wasn't driving in the first and there wasn't the data out for the next one, just a mention of who won and a few things that happened, including his supposed team mate crashing. So it doesn't look like he's actually driving for that team as it stands. I thought he was supposed to be doing more than just the 500 this year? Maybe I heard wrong; I think that chat was pre-covid. He appears to be more interested in driving the new WEC hypercars. Can't say I blame him, they look great! Anyway, as I said, I think he's got an aim and quite probably a plan. It's already been reported that he's calling the engineers at Renault and geeing them up, giving them "ideas" and essentially directing them. Doesn't sound like a typical "next-year's signing" action. Obviously I could be entirely wrong but it is well-known, and he has stated himself, that he has an emotional attachment to Renault. A more cynical person might say he knows where the bodies are buried and so has a bigger hold over them than any other team. I'm actually not saying that. I was thinking it when McLaren took him back after what he did to them before... Hey ho, guess we'll just have to wait and see. My biggest non-surprise would be the parent company pulling out of F1 if they don't get some podiums at the very least next year.
@BenKuyt644 жыл бұрын
Alonso is actually my favourite driver of the "old guard" (2017 and older drivers who had a seat for over two years). His brash comments, his drive to want to be the best without having to kiss ass to get where he wants to be, the way he seemingly imposes his will on his cars to get them to perform for him even when they almost fight against it (GP2 engine, much slower than before, etc). I think he's going to come back to F1 next year, hopefully a Triple Crown King, and show the "new guard" (Russell, Norris, Leclerc, Latifi, Stroll, etc) that the old dogs still have bite, even the ones not driving Mercedes.

It will be interesting to see how the driver dynamic is between Ocon and Alonso. Ocon is a very talented and quick young driver and as we know from history (2007) that normally doesn’t work out too well. Ocon is no Lewis Hamilton but he could definitely cause some problems for Alonso that could be a headache for Renault.

Won't likely happen, Lewis is Lewis that is the exact reason Alonso was on edge. Lewis's talent was a wake up call to Alonso that he wasn't gonna be prioritized in McLaren. His 2021 season is guaranteed by Cyril. Cyril is trying to prove something and he's gonna use Alonso to squeeze every bit of performance from the car, even if the act of prioritizing him will get Ocon snubbed.

In regards to Riccardo leaving Renault. I wasn't there for Riccardo's negotiations with Renault but offering him such a ridiculous sum of money on an opening contract was very silly. It immediately put them in a weak position in future negotiations and gave Riccardo one hell of a leveraging factor in negotiations with other teams. Yeah, Riccardo is one of the best but when he displayed raw and aggressive driving style people love in him he was in a Red Bull that's design fit him like a glove. I have absolutely nothing against with either Riccardo or Renault, just my analysis of what I consider to be a terrible business decision from Renault's position. I would dare claiming that Alonso is still in his prime, even though that was hardly visible in F1 during his final years (especially Baku 2018 comes to mind). His performances at LeMans were impressive (especially 2018). At Daytona he drove a mighty race as well in the Rain. But his (poor) performance at Indy didn't have much to do with the Cheverolet Engine either. In fact the last two winners of the Indy 500 (Will Power and Simon Pagenaud) won on Cheverolet Engines. This had more to do with McLaren's bad preperation and their cooperation with Carlin. You still need technical experience with those Indy cars. That's why his cooperation with Arrows McLaren SP is a lot more promising than his previous attempt (he still has good relations to McLaren's Zak Brown in particular). The bigger issue for Alonso and Honda was Alonso's time in the WEC with Toyota (Honda's nemesis), even though they definitely wanted some payback on Alonso as well. Apart from that interesting video. Some things I haven't put into concideration while others (most of them) were on my radar as well.
@CYMotorsport4 жыл бұрын
That’s a fair point. And I should know better consider the distinction in formula 1. I was more referring to his entire set up, chassis included. Alonso is a very particular driver who likes the car set up in a very specific way with the car built around him. The chassis pose integration I’m sure he would have preferred his McLaren Honda set up. I’ve read some really solid reporting on his mishaps around the strategy and sheer execution hiccups as a team that he faced. Was doomed from the start. Chevrolet had just as many consecutive manufacturer titles as merc does constructors currently so I worded that poorly. Good catch

I still think abiteboul + ocon + alonso might be a bit (too) explosive to handle but on the flipside each part bears big innate potential and especially alonso can carry so much of the burden of the pressure and deliver, if the age doesnt restrict him too much. In Alonso's Case it isnt even innate Potencial rather than refined skill but he has to moderate his temper at times and do some work off track regarding behaviour as well, also he shouldnt force himself onto the team too much, regarding decisions. That said, his direct demeanor is refreshing and sometimes thrilling to see and is his character.

Man gotta say you have spark my interest in F1 for 2022. I don't expect much for next year. Maybe some good on-track battles, but probably it will be another 2013 season.But 2022... Vettel and Alonso fighting... Exciting!

I love Fernando so much. I know it's so so so unlikely but I would LOVE if Renault had a Brawn style season, spending this year building an incredible car for the new regulations, and Fernando could win the 2021 season. It would make my life.

On top of the arguments mentioned in the video, Ricciardo’s move is extra painfull because McLaren is performing so much better with the engine of the Renault Engine than the works team itself. That’s simular to Racing Point out classing Mercedes.

Great vid! Objective and balanced. Way back ALO said he would retire after winning 3 championships. If he was indeed offered a seat in Aston Martin, his chances of winning his 3rd may be better there than in Renault. Before watching your vid, I saw a another clip that made me conclude his ambitions may be bigger than being on top of the podium at the end of the season. Agree with you that it looks like he is now looking beyond that, and I mean even beyond Renault. Speculation: Bernie and Flavio are behind his comeback and they are looking to see how to win F1 back from Liberty. ;) By the way, regarding up and coming drivers. He is the only modern racer I know who trains young drivers through his karting school. Congratulations on your growing sub base! Cheers!

Seb to RedBull would have added a cherry on top of this whole cake, so it would be such an amazing story. But still I think Seb to Renault would have been equally sorta cool. CrankyYankee, we will see how Ricardo does in his new team, I really don’t think he’s special. He said that if he had Hamilton car he could beat him, in addition, he said on Netflix that the people at Renault were in aww when they saw him . I’m over his fake nice guy act and fake smile. He left Red Bull because he wants all the attention. Sorry for rambling.

My issue with this deal is less Fernando (took me a while to get over blaming him for why Schmidt Peterson had to let James Hinchcliffe go after the buyout from McLaren), and more Abiteboul. I mean, his swipe at Ricciardo, criticizing his lack of loyalty, when you look at Sainz, Hulk, and Palmer, and you see how hypocritical that swipe at Ricciardo is.
