I was blown away by this performance when it originally aired, and I still think it is one of the great moments of the 80s. First, because Cyndi Lauper and Patti LaBelle seemed to be from different planets, so this was totally unexpected. Second, because each of them takes on enough of the other's style to create a blend that is magical. Third, because they create such intimacy toward the end; it feels like they're singing for each other, and the audience is just being allowed to watch.

Neither of them held back. They both sang perfectly - played off each other beautifully; with respect and admiration to produce the best possible duet version of this great song. I remember this so well - even almost 30 years after it aired. I still have my VCR tape from this special. So amazing.
