As far as I can tell, this is the first song ever released about female self-gratification. It came out when I was a young teen and it kind of blew my mind that girls did that too. I was so naive 😂

This song made the "Filthy 15", a list of the supposed worst of the worst songs that were corrupting children in the mid 1980s. The list was created by a group called the PMRC who wielded a lot of influence in Congress because Al Gore's wife, Tipper, was it's founder and leader. In response to the attacks from the PMRC and widely publicized Congressional hearings the RIAA agreed to put "Parental Advisory" stickers on certain albums. The albums with those stickers became "forbidden fruit" and the kids wanted to hear them more than ever.

Cyndi being interviewed in "Later with Bob Costas" (the final NBC talk show; it aired after the Tonight Show and Late Night, from 2.00-2.30 am), in 1986 BOB (enthusiastic): I love that song, it's so all-inclusive. "She bop, he bop and we bop. I bop, you bop and they bop." It's so…empowering. CYNDI (can't believe Bob is *this* thick): It's a song about masturbation, Bob. BOB: Oh. I've remembered that for *36 years* . Wow, my brain has no sense of priorities, does it? Other songs about self-love: "Pictures of Lily" by The Who "Dancing with Myself" by Billy Idol "The Stroke" by Billy Squier "I Touch Myself" by Divinyls and I'm sure several more…

I was 9 when the song came out, and I was vaguely aware of what it was about. And so were my parents because I remember them commenting on it. But it was never a "turn that channel!" kind of deal if it came on MTV because - unlike most artists today - she was able to make an arguably subversive statement without being explicit. It was clever.

I have a random memory of seeing that video and What's Love Got To Do With It back to back. Those were the only two I can remember, but I recall sitting there watching MTV one morn. First video MTV banned was to Van Halen's cover of "Pretty Woman" because they had a transvestite tied to a pole who was being groped by two little people and at the end, the woman reveals she was a dude all along with a knowing smirk.

Poppy new wave classic and artist. Lauper was huge in the '80s and early '90s. Very quirky lady and singer. She had the typical new wave punk look and hair style, clothes as well. Many girls back then dressed like her and the colorful clothes, quirky clothes and hairstyles. Check out more of her songs/videos. Her singing style is like Dale Fozzio from Missing Persons and Gwen Stefani (No Doubt). With the in and out high pitch sound. Also the colored, punky hair and clothing style. Brad and Lex. Many of us Gen-Xers didn't find out until later what this song was really about. LOL. Lauper and Prince were something else! They were known for stuff like this.

The song is about "masturbation" without saying the word "masturbation". It was included on the Parents Music Resource Center's "Filthy Fifteen" list, due to its sexual lyrics; this led to the creation of the Parental Advisory sticker. Lauper told The Howard Stern Show she recorded the vocals while she was nude. She has stated that finding a copy of the gay men's magazine Blueboy lying around in the recording studio provided the impetus for writing "She Bop". "She bops, he bops, and we bop. I bop, and you bop, and they bop" in other words, everyone plays with themselves, or at least most people, even if they claim they don't.

It's a song about sexual gratification from a woman's point of view, made into a poppy song... When I was a kid, the sign that said "Uncle Siggy's Master Bingo" went over my head 😂 (Sigmund Freud was a psychoanalyst who theorized about size...) and the housewives embodied the conservative knobheads who spread misinformation about 'hairy palms' and 'going blind' from sexual gratification... Cyndi Lauper was brilliant making this song & video... and no one objected to it(!) the way they did Olivia Newton John's 'Physical' 😂
@flatebo1
@flatebo1 2 жыл бұрын
ONJ had more of a Julie Andrews-type public persona, so Physical wasa bit too much of a departure from that image than many were willing to buy. Lauper was a wierdo, so this song didn't recieve the same resistance from the audience.

Cyndi Lauper in her own words today. "Most people didn’t get what “She Bop” was about until much later, when I went on Dr. Ruth’s radio show. I was playing along with her, making believe I was in a psychiatrist’s office, but then everything I said was blown up later by the press. Suddenly “She Bop” was on the Parents’ Music Resource Center’s “Filthy Fifteen” list of songs that they said should be banned, like “Let me put my Love into you” by AC/DC. Oh, c’est la vie. That’s French for “whatever.” Happy 38th "She Bop"

This song is crazy now, thinking about it. Then again, Cindi Lauper was always kinda out there. Lol. We didn't really know what the song was about. We just liked it as kids during the '80s 😆 it was just another cool new wave singer, song with cool video. Typical of that time period. Another example were The Vapors, new wave punk band. Their "Turning Japanese" song was catchy, fun and cool video 😆

I’m ashamed to say I had no idea what this song was about when it came out. I just thought it was catchy. Then a deejay on the eighties station was taking about it in early 2000’s and I was like, omg I should have known that. 🤪

Cindy had a really unique style of singing. She could belt fantastically but she only did it sparingly in her music. You can obviously hear it when she hits that long note here.

I had no idea what that song was about back in the day, but I'm all for it. Most 80's bands back then trained me to ignore lyrics as being nonsensical or pointless, and just jam out to the sound. Especially Duran Duran. Like, I dearly love "The Reflex" to this day, but have no idea what Simon was going on about, and honestly I don't ever want to know.
