@@DannieDoll If you didn't notice, they were trying different renditions of the same section. Different harmonies between three singers. And some semi-improvised parts to add the singers' personal touches. It's like when you make a movie or television show, you take several "takes". In the end, you choose the one that fits best. Michael's section did not contain a harmony with any other singers. It was a single straightforward melody. There was nothing to experiment with. If you didn't notice, everyone was singing in key the entire time. There were no "wrong" notes. But there was room to experiment on who got what note in the harmony. Part of it is that you "don't know those singers". Cyndi Lauper certainly was not straining to hit any of those notes, though she did add some rasp to her voice for effect. It was effortless for her, too. And she was light and funny. No sweat.

Prince would have been in another corner and they weren't be able to get one pitch perfect recording from Madonna, so the whole session lasted for another day. Btw I'm sure they both would have been humbled by the situation - maybe that's why they didn't join. They were scared of their own humble self.
@dd22musicfan16 жыл бұрын
@Funk O'Matic Supposedly Prince was gonna have the line that Huey ended up singing. So they would've had Michael, then Prince, then Cyndi, and IMO put Madonna in Kim Carnes' place, and then you would've had the two biggest male pop stars in 1985 sing back to back, then the two biggest female pop stars sing back to back, and then possibly the part with "stand together as one," they could've somehow had MJ, Prince, Cyndi, and Madonna all harmonize together on that part. I mean Madonna at that time wasn't near the vocalist that MJ, Prince, and Cyndi were, but as great of talents as they were they probably could've figured something out to make it sound great. That being said, the harmonizing of Huey, Kim, and Cyndi is one of my favorite parts of the song. So it worked out either way.
@dd22musicfan16 жыл бұрын
Imagine if Whitney Houston had debuted a year earlier and been a big enough star by this time to appear on the song. Holy cow.
I think Prince & Madonna would’ve worked but elsewhere in the song. Kim’s rasp was too vital to the chorus. Maybe Al Jarreau and James Ingram replaced, or Daryl Hall.

Michael is amazing. But don’t forget, he co-wrote the song and recorded the vocal for the demo weeks ago. Already in his muscle memory. These three had a lot to learn and coordinate on the spot with this iconic room watching them, tape rolling, and cameras in their faces. All at about 3am. From moving to and from the mic on cue, to working out harmonies, to being perfectly in tune with each other, it’s incredible what they nailed. Worth every moment of rehearsal. I watched her interview somewhere that they told the 'bridge people' to just sing with all they got. The problem is, by nature Cindy's songs are much more powerful than Kim's. Her voice would totally eat Kim's (not saying Kim's bad, but her songs are just very different). She admitted that she tried to be polite and grasping how much she could 'gave her all'. Her conclussion was that strong 'Yea yea yeah' part, and not singing together with Kim.

@kexia56304 жыл бұрын
@@paradoxmeld2937 For a nobody I sure do have you bothered. Lol! And the truth still stands: Those other folks in the clip couldn't sing a simple line or two on key. Not only that, some of them couldn't even sing on beat! How are they professional singers and can't even sing a few simple lines on key and on beat? Lmao! That's just bad singing. Period. And don't try to use MJ as a scapegoat. It doesn't matter if a singer's singing next to Michael Jackson or Roseanne Barr. If you're a so-called professional singer, you should be able to sing simple notes on beat with relative ease. Especially if you're singing in a group because the other voices naturally mask a bad note here and there. That's why people who are picked to sing solos (like Michael Jackson in this clip) tend to be the best singers in the group. It's because when singing solos there's no other voices to hide behind. If a soloist sings a bad note (like Cyndi Lauper in this clip), it's more noticable. And I don't even hate Cyndi or the others. I've heard them sing before and they sound alright in their specific genre at times. But this clip just proves that there's a huge difference between "performers" and real, talented singers. This clip shows why MJ is the King of Pop.

At around the 4:00 mark, you can see Lionel Richie speaking to Steve Perry and Daryl Hall. Steve is shown saying OK at 4:16. I feel that Lionel had asked one of them to help with the harmony because between 5:30 and 5:57 you'll see Steve standing to the right of them, coaching and singing along. Lionel then nods to Steve as if to say he approves of the outcome. Huey, Cindy and Kim seem to be waiting for a comment from Steve. Then Steve says, "I'm too burnt out to tell anybody anything".

Their was an interview with Kenny Loggins a year or so ago (Kenny had done the duet together with Steve "Don't Fight It" before We Are the World, so they knew each other pretty well by this night) and Kenny talked about how Steve Perry had stepped in to coach Cyndi Lauper to get that line just right. Also, Steve Perry was/is very well versed in creating harmonies as they did in Journey. Steve was trying not to over-step too hard in his suggestions, which is why he said "I'm too burned out to tell anybody what to do", because he was feeling a little uncomfortable about doing that, but did want to help. Kenny described it as pretty interesting and amazing.
