Well, he did co-write the song with Lionel Richie and worked on the demo with Quincy Jones about a week before the night they asked the rest of the singers to record after the American Music Awards that year. Everyone else had to learn their parts in a matter of hours because they needed to record everything before the next morning since everyone was flying out to resume their own work schedules.

@@DannieDoll If you didn't notice, they were trying different renditions of the same section. Different harmonies between three singers. And some semi-improvised parts to add the singers' personal touches. It's like when you make a movie or television show, you take several "takes". In the end, you choose the one that fits best. Michael's section did not contain a harmony with any other singers. It was a single straightforward melody. There was nothing to experiment with. If you didn't notice, everyone was singing in key the entire time. There were no "wrong" notes. But there was room to experiment on who got what note in the harmony. Part of it is that you "don't know those singers". Cyndi Lauper certainly was not straining to hit any of those notes, though she did add some rasp to her voice for effect. It was effortless for her, too. And she was light and funny. No sweat.

I later read that Quincy was annoyed at her because of the bracelots and stuff, but I thought she nailed it on her first take. I was never a big fan of the guy before her who not only dropped out of key but also came in too close to the mic so that when Cindi had her turn, she had to wait for him to get out of her way. I thought it was Huey who did more to f*ff up the recording than CL.

Yeah. I've seen this before in my career. Her performances are about emotion, connection and raw talent. So she's thrown into this project with performers who are about precision and tight harmonies (and the bridge people). Even in her own songs, especially live, she doesn't sing on beat with with the other vocals. But that's her free spirit style and that's why we love her. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. As a musician with little technical training, I've been in situations where we're writing and they're like, "You need to fill this note to complete the chord" and like, "um..."

He did co-write the song and worked on the demo for a week before it was actually recorded when the rest of the singers took time from their already busy schedules and instead of heading home or to a after-parties showed up to learn their parts, rehearse and record in a matter of hours after the American Music Awards that year. As I recall, the song's chorus with the entire group was recorded first. Then majority of the group left when the selected solo parts where selected to record the individual lines. Everything except Bob Dylan and the later part by Ray Charles was recorded before daylight the next day after the American Music Awards. The extra parts were recorded a week after.

@@Sirynx77 oh yeah Ive seen the documentary. And trust me I'm not taking anything away from they're wonderful performances, but as a singer it is very hard to literally sound identical every time like a record player. And Michael was very busy at the time too so it just shows his own work ethic added to everyone else's. Admirable.

Shout out to Lionel Richie for making Cyndi more comfortable with herself. And for suggesting that they sing that last part in harmony. Excellent idea Lionel! Oh and I'm glad the Netflix doc came out. It shows that no one received demos like some idiot lied and said they did. Michael looks disappointed, but thats because he didn't go to the AMAs that were going on. He was practicing by himself all day. Everyone else was at thr awards show. So NO ONE had any preparation before getting there that night. Which makes this show just how talented these people actually were. They had ONE NIGHT to get this done without any prep whatsoever. I said this in my last comment. That you Netflix for proving me right. And after 39 years this coming out, my memory is still better than most people.

Prince would have been in another corner and they weren't be able to get one pitch perfect recording from Madonna, so the whole session lasted for another day. Btw I'm sure they both would have been humbled by the situation - maybe that's why they didn't join. They were scared of their own humble self.

@Funk O'Matic Supposedly Prince was gonna have the line that Huey ended up singing. So they would've had Michael, then Prince, then Cyndi, and IMO put Madonna in Kim Carnes' place, and then you would've had the two biggest male pop stars in 1985 sing back to back, then the two biggest female pop stars sing back to back, and then possibly the part with "stand together as one," they could've somehow had MJ, Prince, Cyndi, and Madonna all harmonize together on that part. I mean Madonna at that time wasn't near the vocalist that MJ, Prince, and Cyndi were, but as great of talents as they were they probably could've figured something out to make it sound great. That being said, the harmonizing of Huey, Kim, and Cyndi is one of my favorite parts of the song. So it worked out either way.

Michael is amazing. But don’t forget, he co-wrote the song and recorded the vocal for the demo weeks ago. Already in his muscle memory. These three had a lot to learn and coordinate on the spot with this iconic room watching them, tape rolling, and cameras in their faces. All at about 3am. From moving to and from the mic on cue, to working out harmonies, to being perfectly in tune with each other, it’s incredible what they nailed. Worth every moment of rehearsal. To echo another commenter, Cindi’s ad-lib is iconic.

Yup Cindi's is the best part, in a way she composed that part, by changing the lyrics (adding three more "wells" and "yeah, yeah") and melody, coz' Cindi is also a songwriter, that it became: "well, well, well, well" with melody going up and changed the melody on the word "come" and bent it. She was struggling with just one well, it was very awkward.

I watched her interview somewhere that they told the 'bridge people' to just sing with all they got. The problem is, by nature Cindy's songs are much more powerful than Kim's. Her voice would totally eat Kim's (not saying Kim's bad, but her songs are just very different). She admitted that she tried to be polite and grasping how much she could 'gave her all'. Her conclussion was that strong 'Yea yea yeah' part, and not singing together with Kim.

@@paradoxmeld2937 For a nobody I sure do have you bothered. Lol! And the truth still stands: Those other folks in the clip couldn't sing a simple line or two on key. Not only that, some of them couldn't even sing on beat! How are they professional singers and can't even sing a few simple lines on key and on beat? Lmao! That's just bad singing. Period. And don't try to use MJ as a scapegoat. It doesn't matter if a singer's singing next to Michael Jackson or Roseanne Barr. If you're a so-called professional singer, you should be able to sing simple notes on beat with relative ease. Especially if you're singing in a group because the other voices naturally mask a bad note here and there. That's why people who are picked to sing solos (like Michael Jackson in this clip) tend to be the best singers in the group. It's because when singing solos there's no other voices to hide behind. If a soloist sings a bad note (like Cyndi Lauper in this clip), it's more noticable. And I don't even hate Cyndi or the others. I've heard them sing before and they sound alright in their specific genre at times. But this clip just proves that there's a huge difference between "performers" and real, talented singers. This clip shows why MJ is the King of Pop.

At around the 4:00 mark, you can see Lionel Richie speaking to Steve Perry and Daryl Hall. Steve is shown saying OK at 4:16. I feel that Lionel had asked one of them to help with the harmony because between 5:30 and 5:57 you'll see Steve standing to the right of them, coaching and singing along. Lionel then nods to Steve as if to say he approves of the outcome. Huey, Cindy and Kim seem to be waiting for a comment from Steve. Then Steve says, "I'm too burnt out to tell anybody anything".

Also, Steve Perry was/is very well versed in creating harmonies as they did in Journey. Steve was trying not to over-step too hard in his suggestions, which is why he said "I'm too burned out to tell anybody what to do", because he was feeling a little uncomfortable about doing that, but did want to help. Kenny described it as pretty interesting and amazing.

@Screaming Mimi's whats your point? lots of artists, including these, have lip synced live shows here and there and anyway the man has a great voice and talent AND no, he didnt even lip sync many shows because lip sync was BARELY a thing in the 80s. im not sure if you're big enough of a michael jackson 'fan' to claim you know that so just sit down ok

@Screaming Mimi's his three tours with his brothers were 100 % live. The Bad tour was like 95 % live. The dangerous tour was around 50% live. Then the hIstory tour was like 10 % live. And then he was almost 40 and had problems with the voice. Still like over 300 shows that was puerly live. Plus he was a dancer, so sometimes it wss better to lipsynce songs like Smooth Criminal, Jam, Scream and so on
