I was a youngster when the original version of this song cane out... definitely loved Cyndi in the 80s, she was so unique, fun and iconic! I remember my first time listening to Cindy. It was at school in 2015, the teachers gathered all the kids and made a cover on this song, it was so beautiful and sweet that I even cried lol. In the same day I broke up with my girlfriend, which lead me to a depression. All I remember is that I would lay down looking at the sky having True colors playing on my phone. Damn... those were definitely hard times but that's how I got to know this wonderful woman, thanks for everything.

Great story of how today's kids come across her music. I do not clearly remember the first time i heard her but it was my mother playing it in the living room. I was 6 or 7. It was 84 or 85. Her music, aside from being good and it seems in time to have become undervalued, makes me incredibly nostalgic.

I recall she said this song was because of a 12 year old boy she knew thrown out of his house because he was gay. She has shown herself to be so compassionate for people. God I wish there would have been people able to speak up in the 50's when I was a kid, but thats when Hell was in session and dear ones could have sure used her compassion and mercy.

About 10 years ago I saw her sing this, which has been adopted as a sort of gay rallying cry and anthem, live in the park at Toronto’s Pride festivities. Hundreds of gay men, buff, beautiful, all swaying slowly and weeping. It was really something to see.

In loving memory of My only daughter.....taken on australia day.... Emily, when she was 17. Would walk around all day, listening to this song. I didn't really bother listening. Then she said something awful " mum I want this at my funeral ok" I shuddered. Why would I be at her funeral?? That's not the cycle of life.. What 17 year old, healthy and full of spark, tells their mum what to play at her funeral. I can quote it word for word as its impact was extreme....on australia day this year. Just 3 days ago, she was celebrating Australia day with her children, her dad and her fiance. I live far away. Im glad i wasnt there, or i know i would have made sure i let myself go with her. I would have caused more trauma. They took their boat onto the nepean river for a fun adventure. Always a fun adventure my girl. Her other fav lauper song, girls just wanna have fun....I watched the tragic accident on the weir at Penrith. The revival attempts, the helicopters winching a child and an adult out....Didn't take much notice.... then came the phone call no parent wants. Your daughter could not be saved..... I lost my girl, her children in horror watched them trying to revive her. The struggle for over 40 minutes to even rescue her... They too were washed along, her children. Her daughter , a bright young lady, has moderate autism and I hope somehow that's protecting her as she appears outwardly to not really be processing...she just posts on her fb I love u mum and I miss you mum.... verbally she's not expressing but she always expressed more in messages, rarely on the phone. her youngest though, her son is just beside himself. The warning buoys that were there to let people know of the danger ahead, got washed away in a flood 12 MONTHS AGO. Same identical accident in november 2 months ago but they didn't put them back. I guess those two men lived so it didnt really matter....the buoys were there as when the river rises you cannot always see the weir. How simple and cheap is it to put them back ??? They had recently released water from the dam so the river was higher than normal. PENRITH COUNCIL have killed the most precious person. Off track I know but her words came back in a flash. Tonight I lay in bed and sobbed broken all night long. I listened, really listened to this all night over and over. I know now baby girl that although you were 17 when you were addicted to this song. It's still you omg so much you. Baby girl, mummy bear will insist this be played at your funeral next week.... I won't be bullied out of it. I know so many people are grieving. Hundreds of messages a day . BUT YOU WERE MY CHILD not theirs and I will fulfill that request. In loving memory baby bear from your mumzy bear
