@greg acosta Did you ever hear George Michael tell the story how Michael Jackson disrespected him? He went to Neverland as Michael insisted George go there and they were going to discuss doing a single. He said after Michael made him STAND in the foyer for half an hour then Michael was sitting across from him on couches and Michael would not talk to him directly. He would talk to his manager and tell him to talk to Rob kahane to then talk to George. George said this guy is straight-up crazy, no amount of money is worth being disrespected in this way and I want nothing to do with him. It was either 87 or 88 George sold more records than Michael. I agree with your jealousy assessment. George could easily sing R&B pop and dance music, wrote his own songs and played on them and could dance. Strikingly gorgeous he was....defined as normal. Definitely things Michael Jackson wouldn't like.

I'm not sure why you are saying that George Michael never got the recognition he deserved? Yes he did. In 1988 George Michael was the biggest selling artist & was one of the most influential artists of our time; the Paul McCartney of Late Baby Boomers & Gen X's Generation. He has one of the most amazing catalogs of songs that he NOT only wrote, he played most of the instruments on and produced, that are still timeless today! He was shoulder-to-shoulder with MJ & Prince. Just saying:)

you are correct, at least for the UK. i think he was perceived differently in the USA - i know his debut solo album was considered a soul record in the States, he was seen as a solo artist who came out with a blinding first album. In the UK, he had been in Wham! for years, he was seen, by the shitty media here, as (in the parlance of the day!) a 'teeny bopper' type.....kinda throwaway pop nonsense. his vocals were never even considered. and because of said shitty press, he was never really taken terribly seriously over here. i mean, he was, by the public, but he was not critically acclaimed, not really. i remember the press here blowing up over this performance, none of them expected it somehow. i'd been a massive fan for ever, so i knew he could hit that note, but you could almost feel the country holding its collective breath waiting for it, almost expecting him to fuck up. people were genuinely surprised, taken aback, that someone they had almost written off as pop fodder had stolen the show in such a masterful way. it was never very 'cool' to like George Michael's music over here. strange but true.
