@skullcash11 Health was normalised in Cataclysm to allow heavier, consistent AOE damage to raid groups. At iLevel 333, most DPS have around 80k, tanks have between 100-120k. As a result, encounters can be designed to throw way more damage at you because they know for certain it won't kill you instantly like it would in TBC and Wrath, where you had a gigantic disparity between tank health and DPS/healer health. That's their rationale, it's pretty good rationale tbh.

@reboundpants You really DO NOT want to be any where near those things. Blast Wave can be used at range now, frostnova requires you to be close to mobs that explode if you're within proximity and hit you for 20k each with a stacking damage debuff. I'll be honest, trying to frostnova that sounds like blatant suicide.

At the start of Cataclysm this boss was one of the wo guys I always hated fighting, his jumping attack was so fast that you sometimes couldn't dodge it even when you moved straight away, and he also had a horrible habit of hitting you into his next dust cloud and then insta-killing. However I enjoyed the difficulty of the Cataclysm heroics, I don't like how now all the difficulty is in raids and there is no difficult 5 mans anymore. I tried challenge mode but it no one else seems to do them.

@ilako90 Frost armour will cause me to go OOM too fast. Mage Armour is very much essential right now in fights like this. It regenerates a CRAZY amount of mana and is not dependent on spirit anymore. Attempts to use other kinds of armour ended up in me being OOM very quickly.

I Absolutely love what they have done to most of the heroics, Its Challenging, Is Hard, Its Brilliant. This boss, There is no room for one or two members to be carried around, EVERYONE has a role in this fight. I am very excited to try this myself, Keep up the great work Total.

@glemmstengal More like the priest was having huge difficulties avoiding going OOM because dispel is expensive and any heal that isn't 'Heal' costs between 8-10k mana.

Even after learning this fight, I can imagine wiping to it from time to time - even on a guild run - at the appropriate gear level. I really hope that they fix healing mana issues; just as I hope that they do NOT nerf this fight. It looks like it is tuned really well as TB was saying. Every heroic fight should have such a learning curve as this. Just awesome!

@mafiaosobob I'm thinking it's not going to be that easy. You have a couple of insta-death mechanics that cannot be outgeared for one thing and the execution is extremely technical. I'm running with 2 members of Aspire, ranked 75th in the EU and 125th in the world as well as 2 other extremely experienced players. Now ofc, we are figuring out the fight from scratch and don't have crutches like DBM available, but really, how do you think the average dummy is going to perform here? :)

we are surely spoilt this year with beta videos for cataclysm from quite a few posters on youtube, watching them lured me back to wow after 8 months in the wilderness. would class myself more casual now, done the raids heroics in the past, its nice just to log in and chill, currently lvlling my fishing on deviate fish in the barrens.

It's good to see that things are changing for the best and that I'll be given the chance to improve myself as a player. For too long I've just been able to mash one button to kill things. I'm debating though if I want to continue playing my death knight or go back to my rogue so I can vanish for most of these wipes at the end to save some repair bill costs haha.

Glad to see heroics are the way they were when BC first arrived, nice and hard...if you remember Heroic Shattered Halls back then, these seem comparable to it. Also, the healer that sacrificed herself for mana is something i've been doing since vanilla, its a very handy talent when mana conservation is actually a challenge.

Regarding how to best avoid the shard attack. You should never try to jump out of anything, because your hitbox actually seems to stay in the spot you jumped from while you're in mid-air.

@DocKro23 We spent a great deal of time that's for sure, but we faced instances resets and server crashes during this time, so we had to re clear the trash a few times. We were also having disconnects and pretty much every wipe recovery lasted 5-10min.

@MrAimgika It's likely the healing/mana issues for Holy is based on using or not using Lightwell though, though it will be tuned differently upon release of course. It also helps deal with the mobility issue somewhat, and takes the burden off of PW: Shield and Renew/Talented Chastise. I respect the choice, but I suspect that Lightwell will be "required" for properly utilizing mana for heals in Heroic and Raid content. Good job regardless.

Excellent work on the video Totalhalibut. First things first, congratulations on get this boss down. Hoping to see the cataclysm heroics will get tough but not too tough to the point of TBC heroic. Also for this content, I think you are forgetting the part that this boss was done by the class and not the player. 3 classes that can aoe while most groups will probably have 2 range and 1 aoe can cause problems (unless you and hunter were doing it). Also, u gonna be posting vids at live cata ?

@datboi448 Warlock responding, you're totally right as you will see in the kill video. At this point our main issue was just getting them shards down fast enough. When we realised that we needed more dps we tuned our aoe to save mana costs.

Difficulty like this in Heroics will also promote guild cohesion. Guilds will need to get together to really study and work on content such as this, and also teach newer members how to get something like this done. Brilliant fight in my opinion, and it's true, you do gotta love blizzard for good content like this.

Wow, thats one amazing fight... I can see alot of issues cropping up for oceanic players with it, which of corse we will handle like the resourceful players we are. (Think defiles in LK - not an easy feat when your average latency is between 200-300ms, with tunnels) Can't wait for Cata to really step up the game and force us to pay attention and become better players as a whole.

@thegreatersnake Warlock replying. We didn't, we saw quite fast that it was doable and seeing how bad destro scales with stats we decided not to respecc. I don't think the hunter was specced for it either, but since it was just a matter of execution and us not wanting to delay the run even more we just pushed though. After all its just a heroic boss^^

@ConnorTMav2 Well said. Just because a random group tool has been implemented doesn't mean blizzard should balance the game around pugging 100% of the time. This is a multiplayer game and people need to join a guild, or at the very least find some friends to do runs with. Wish more people would understand that. This has been and still is a guild oriented game.

thanks for the vids. It seems from your vids that the type of spec someone is can really change how the battle goes for the group. Back in previous WoW, the different specs were fun, but say along as you had a mage or a priest, etc. it didn't matter what spec they were until raids. I guess what i'm trying to say is that the each spec plays much more differently than previously, where the spec you were wasn't that big of a deal. (for dungeons)

@MrKharay1977 Vanilla content was very hard to pug,so hard that you needed a tank with some fire resistance in order to tank the elementals, Dire Maul North was insane and Strat UD/Scarlet, Scholo and BRS where raids that required a lot of focus. The Heroics in BC where also merciless and very fun. That was probably the most fun part of WoW, content was difficult and you where punished for your mistakes unlike in Wrath, I'm glad Blizzard woke up and adopted the BC formula once again.

I agree with the assessment that TB gives in this video, and the one for the successful run of this instance, regarding play difficulty. It is for this reason that I am certain that, once the suits see the revenue drop due to folks quitting because hard instances aren't fun for the majority of players, the devs will nerf this back to Wrath difficulty or the suits will fire them and replace them with devs that will. Profit trumps gameplay, and most players want WOW-as-Themepark- not a game.

I would like to point something out that might help you. Jumping is something you NEVER want to do when you are trying to get out of a damaging "zone" or "cone" the server interprets you as still being in that area until you land and will take 1-2 ticks of damage more then you should if you just sidled out.

The major problem here was the healer's mana. At every wipe, the healer was totally oom. This will be a lot more doable once that problem is fixed. Still, great fight, looking forward to more like this one. Thanks for the vid, TB.

It looks solid, but I have a question. When he goes into Phase Two, couldn't you just run back the way you came? If you're running away from him during that time, the adds would follow you down the path, giving a chance for them to run through whatever AoE you have. I'm not sure weather the boss would follow you as well or just tunnel around in that area, but doesn't that warrant at least a try or whatever?

as a holy priest doing heroics i must say... healing heroics is extremely hard. extreme mana conservation is vital obviously. i simply cant do some fights because i am constantly running and cant pump out the big numbers. but i cant help but say, its kinda fun :P brings back the skill.

@Optimusj1975 It's not just like playing WotLK with 500 ping. It's playing a beta with 500 ping. It's a different ballgame altogether. There's slight graphic issues in Cataclysm that causes instant FPS drops, regardless of you PC spec. You can go from an even 60 FPS to 8 in a second.

Hey TB, I have a question. The timing of the Crystal Shards during Phase 1 seem to be such that you could possibly use something like Frost Nova to root them in place. I guess the more pertinent question is are they rootable? The implication is that they are considering that Blast Wave works well on them.

@Shuubbie Uhm i dont know if you know this but the good Vanilla raids dropped epic not blues. Even AQ20 and ZG dropped as much/ more epics then blues. The only one that dropped allot of blues was UBRS and that was a semi-intro raid. The good raids (40mans) only droped epics as it should be.

Would the current normals and heroics count as a bit taxing for melee type classes as rogues - Paladins - DK's - Warriors? From what it seems from some instance videos, certain bosses have a few taxing effects on melee, generally being a bit more forgiving on ranged and casters as long as they bother to properly move around. I'm not stating it's unfair if this is the case, being a melee class is supposed to be a bit more risky as theyre basically frontline soldiers in greater harm than others.

I wonder if Power Word Shield/Barrier would help a lot? I'm not convinced that 'wait for a mod' should be the way forward when designing/dealiing with a boss. I don't feel you should be punished for something you can't help(lag). It does seem cool; this is a boss you would likely end up having in a single-player game. Sadly we do not have dodge-rolling or similar. I suppose what'd 'make or break' is if the rewards are required or not. That would put difficulty in perspective.

@RealGamedale Blizzard intended the term Heroic to mean to finish it would feel like a heroic moment in game, and the developers would all prefer the game to be tough, wotlk's breezy difficulty was like Blizzard "killing their baby" in a sense. But with the difficulty and the initial fails of pug groups, people are gonna realize you gotta roll with a guild in cata to really experience the game as they intended it to be.

During this beta's build. Prayer of Healing cost 12K mana with -20% of the actual coefficient. I had 316ilvl gear, mostly T10heroic and green gear. Corborus stacked the healing absorb debuff, I HAD TO dispel. That was hard/challenging. ;)

I don't think thousands of miles of cables are less important than the way packages are traded between my machine and the realm server. That probably could improve P2P here, but the game, I really don't have much hope on Leatrix for that.

Right now in Beta from what i've seen in heorics theres no epics yet duno if that will change or not, but yes i think blues should hold more value then they did in 3.5+ ( even b4 that but yeah). And nah ZG was pretty 1/2 and 1/2 and lass boss was only epics.

Hey TB this is a question as far as the warlock goes.. does he have the shadowfury which is AoE stun ability and or the glyph of shadowflame which slows anything it hits by 70%? Idk just to me those would seem ideal in that sort of situation.
