Hello! Heads up for you all! Around the hour mark in the video, I say that Godzilla vs. Destoroyah was released in 1985. However, the correct release year is actually 1995. My apologies for the slip up!

Born in 1963, i grew during the monster boom. Even then Gamera movies were something of a minor league, but I loved the franchise. Even as a first grader when Gamera vs Jaigar came out in 1970, I thought it was more “realistic” just because of all the green blood that came out when he was injured. Well congratulations for the long video. I was captivated and didn’t realize it was 90 minutes long until you mentioned it at the end. Great work and God bless.

Gamera the Brave is soooo underappreciated. I think its 'failure' is just a side effect of the time it was released, with most people getting tired of kaiju movies. I feel it's a strong closing to an era of Gamera movies. Hoping to see a new Gamera movie in my lifetime, I hope Kadokawa would see Shin Gojira and Shin Ultraman's success and do something about it. Hell, if Hideaki Anno wants to do a Gamera movie, he's very welcome to do so.

@@SpaceWizardCosplayMore so than just Gamera Rebirth, Kaneko said that he had approached Kadokawa with a new Gamera pitch but it had to be shelved for Rebirth. Once Rebirth is released, maybe they'll contact him again. Even if they don't, we have the recent statement of Seshita, director of Rebirth, that if Rebirth does well, he has ideas for a second season, a live action series and even up to ten movies. We gotta support Gamera Rebirth, because if it profits, Gamera may well become the powerhouse he was before

Last November we found out Gamera was making his grand return with the Rebirth anime, and after many years of telling myself that I would get around to watching his franchise, I thought there was no better time. I found out there were 12 Gamera movies, so I decided to watch one movie a month. Around April of 2023, I found this video of yours. I remember watching your History & Evolution of Godzilla video way back when it came out, so I knew I was in for a treat. However, I didn't want to spoil the movies for myself, so every time I finished a movie, I would come back here and watch a bit more of your video. It's been a pleasure watching you talk about each film over the last few months, and I can't wait to see what else you have instore.

I have been a life-long Gamera fan. Many people make fun of the Showa era films but I think they are great. Noriaki Yuasa crafted them with love and infused them with elements that capture the child's imagination. He is to be commended for this. Without his work, we would not have the great Heisei trilogy that came later. Shusuke Kaneko was just the right man to breathe new life into the franchise. I even liked Gamera the Brave and the way it returned to its child friendly roots. Too bad it didn't continue. Very nice video. Thanks!

Gamera vs. Gyaos is my favorite of the Showa era. What's ironic is that even though it brought the kid-friendly factor back into the series, it's probably one of the scariest kaiju movies of its time. Gyaos is a great villain. His glowing eyes, creepy hiss/roar and nocturnal predation habits make him more formidable than the usual giant monster, and the green glow around the mountains really made for some great atmosphere. Plus, his sonic beam is probably one of the nastiest ranged weapons of any kaiju.

Excellent job. I am a 57 year old Japanese American who's been in California since 1971 so my childhood memory of Gamera are the same as any kid in CA at that time(I think they usually played on Channel 11 or Channel 9 on was called KTTV). I must say the new dubbing of the new Gamera is way better than when I was a kid. Back then, the dubbing made the people sound like morons and they all spoke with a fake Japanese accent. We were all unknowingly racist at the time but today the translation is very good, no goofy accent or weird dialog. I think it's thanks to Anime and Manga because it turned on a young crowd to Japanese culture. Think about it, no modern kid would think its OK to put a dump Japanese accent on a Dragonball Z episode. As far as your presentation, I found it spot on. I loved all the wacky monsters and found them cool. The knifehead with shyurikens mat seem stupid modern kids was "Wow Bitch'n!" to a 6 year old watching on a small black and white TV. Later in life I looked back at the Gamera movies with found memories but also with realization on how cheaply they were made. So watching the new Gamera, specially Gamera Vs Iris, I was delighted and Amazed at how good the new Gamera was. It is as you said, the old generation remaking their beloved Kaiju into what they think would make it even better.

The Heisei Godzilla and Gamera films were made for older audiences. I mean, the Heisei Gamera especially, were dark as hell and gory at times. It really takes it seriously. Kaneko wanted no “kid-friendly” shit in the Heisei Gamera films. He wanted none at all. And ignored the idea of making Gamera scary (cough cough Nightmare Gamera.) Even his design in Gamera 3, was terrifying.

As a 6-8 year old, I really liked how scary yet silly the suit looked, something about saving the falling kid really spoke to me, like even though Gamera is destroying the city, he still knew he had to save that kid, meaning he's not really a monster, just misunderstood. 10/10 kaiju, still love him more than Godzilla

There are a lot of interesting ways that Gamera contrasts with, and in some ways, one-ups the "Big Brother" that is Godzilla despite Godzilla always being perceived as the de-facto superior, more prominent, more successful character. - The Gamera films were so good at appealing to children in the 60s that it lead to Godzilla films changing their style to become more child oriented - The Gamera Heisei Trilogy is generally perceived as being superior than the Heisei Godzilla films in terms of storytelling and filmmaking -Mileage may vary on Gamera The Brave, but it is certainly better than the worst entries of the Millennium Godzilla era as well as at least being SIMPLER than the anthology series that is the Millennium Godzilla era -In fact...for any prospective new fan, the Gamera franchise is an overall "Simpler" and "Easier" franchise to digest than Godzilla. Gamera has only 12 films compared to Godzilla having almost 40 -The Gamera films are also notorious for their copious amounts of Kaiju violence, which always helps a monster movie appeal to kids and normies -Many die-hard fans were disappointed with Criterion's Spine #1000 Godzilla collection, meanwhile, Arrow's Gamera Collection was incredibly comprehensive and universally praised among fans -Gamera's anime series on Netflix is pretty much hands-down considered to be far superior to BOTH of Godzilla's anime projects, the trilogy and the series If Gamera manages to get a big Hollywood reboot that is superior to G98 and G14....or some kind of universally praised modern trilogy...then his profile will continue to be raised to a level where his legacy would truly challenge that of Godzilla.
@jessfrankel5212 Жыл бұрын
As a kid, Gamera movies were cool. The eyes of the monsters always got me; they always stared. Who cared how ridiculous they looked? What I remember best was when the 1995 reboot of Gamera came out, I think I was the only foreigner in the theater. (I live in Osaka). And the film was good! Done in a straightforward manner with decent acting and solid special effects (for the time) and very solid direction and music, it was a revelation. (My wife is Japanese and refused to come with me). Just some thoughts.... Gamera (the name) came from a mix of Game (pronounced Gameh and meaning turtle) and the suffix -ra, (Gojira, Mothra, etc). The female star of all three '90's films was Shinobu Nakayama, whose sister is Miho Nakayama, a former pop star and actress. And it's fortunate that Ayako Fujitani doesn't look like her father... 😉😂

Great video! My opinion on Heisei Gamera: Gamera 2 is the best in overall storytelling, pace and action. Gamera 1 is a close second but some spfx shots are a little clunky. Gamera 3 has the best design, special effects, miniatures everything! But the story and pace of it all is a real slog. It really leaned into the Evangelion inspired storytelling. Confusing drawn out character monologues, trying to add extra mythos, etc. The monster action is great - but it feels so drawn out - by the time Gamera walks away at the end we want more and the film ends.
@Kaiju-bm4ts Жыл бұрын
That's the point of gamera 3. The entire trilogy itself (especially g2 and g3) had religious undertones and themes. Gamera 3 ends on a cliffhanger to ask a question to the audience. Do you have faith gamera will win?. If g1 is about discovering faith (gamera makes his first appearance in modern Japan), and g2 is about confirming faith (gamera proves to be humanity's ally by fighting alongside military against legion) then g3 is about questioning faith which is why gamera looks intimidating, isn't in the film much, kills more people on accident and is painted out as the antagonist only for it to be revealed he was still good. You can't pull off a execution like that if g3 was like g1 or g2 in terms of pacing. Godzilla vs kong was very action focused the attention was on kong most of the time, why? Because godzilla was the misunderstood hero of the film and was painted out as the antagonist only for the real antagonist to show itself. G2 is a good movie and is my 2nd favorite of the trilogy with the best action but g3 couldn't had done what it wanted if it followed the same logic g2 did. Plus g3 by all accounts was MUCH more simpler than evangelion, and I'm saying that as someone who understood g3 and is still somewhat confused by evangelion. Kaneko described the trilogy perfectly. G1 is Sci fi, g2 is a war movie, g3 is supernatural. He even admits gmk was both a war movie and supernatural.

I don't know why I subbed to you before, but this came up as a recommend. Gamera is my favorite monster, but I was only given Godzilla as a child.

I grew up with both Showa and Heisei Gamera movies, so I really loved this video. Also I laughed my ass off, great to see someone making fun of what even 7 year old me thought ridiculous.
